In consideration of others, please silence your cell phones. Preparation Prelude (9 a.m.) All Glory, Laud, and Honor J. S. Bach (11 a.m.) Hosanna to the Son of David Michael Bedford Children s Intro to Music Words of Welcome *Call to Worship Adoration The Reverend Katherine Kerr One: Let us enter the city with God and sing hosannas to our king. All: Let us turn our backs on the powers that grasp for control and open our hearts to the Son of God. One: Let us join his parade and follow the one who brings freedom and peace. All: Let us join Christ s disciples and shout for joy at his coming. One: Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! All: Glory to God! Hosanna! *Processional Hymn No. 196 valet will ich dir geben All Glory, Laud, and Honor

2 Large-print hymnals and Bibles are available. Please let an usher know if you would like one. The Prayer of Confession is adapted from a prayer written by The Reverend Teri Peterson and is used with permission. Call to Confession Prayer of Confession All: Confession The Reverend Erika Funk Holy God, you come into our lives in ways we do not expect. Sometimes, we confess, we worry you are making a fool of yourself and of us. We struggle to see how your way can work or be right because it is so contrary to our ambition and understanding. Forgive us for projecting our narrow world views on you and for expecting you to conform to our ideas and standards. Take our branches and our lives that we may lay them down in your service, following your way even when we cannot understand. Assurance of Pardon One: Friends, believe the good news. All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. A time of silence will be kept. *Response (Hymn No. 197, stanza 1) ellacombe Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang; through pillared court and temple the joyful anthem rang. To Jesus who had blessed them, close folded to his breast, the children sang their praises, the simplest and the best. Prayer for Illumination Proclamation Scripture Mark 11:1-11 pew Bible pg. 47 One: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Today we recognize FPC 4th graders who have completed Catechism this year. Catechism is a special time in the 4th graders faith formation, and we celebrate them as a church family. Anthem (11 a.m.) Hosanna! Sing to Our Great King! Trevor Manor Carol and Kirk Choirs Time with Children Children in kindergarten through 2nd grade may leave for First Church. They will return to the sanctuary during the last hymn. Younger children may go to the nursery. Presentation of Catechism Class (11 a.m.) Tammy Winchip Scripture Philippians 2:5-11 pew Bible pg. 197 Sermon The Reverend Katelyn Gordon Cooke The Promise of Humility The 11 a.m. service is televised over WSOC-TV, Channel 9, this morning and streamed live at Anthem I Want Jesus to Walk With Me arr. Moses Hogan Stephanie Patterson, soloist I want Jesus to walk with me. I want Jesus to walk with me all my pilgrim journey. Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me. In my trials, Lord, walk with me. When my heart is almost breaking, Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.when I m troubled, Lord, walk with me. Lord, when my head is bowed in sorrow, I want Jesus to walk with me.

3 Response *Affirmation of Faith (From A Declaration of Faith) We recognize the work of God in Jesus power and authority. He did what only God can do. We also recognize the work of God is Jesus lowliness. When he lived as a servant and went humbly to his death the greatness that belongs only to God was manifest. In both his majesty and lowliness Jesus is the eternal Son of God, God himself with us. Prayers of the People Stewardship of Life Hospitality Presentation of Tithes and Offering The Reverend Pen Peery Offertory Anthem Let This Mind Be in You Lee Hoiby Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.wherefore God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The palms are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Genie Cooke by Katherine, Bill, and Caroline Kerr. Part of our offering today goes to the Ten-Cents-A-Meal program, a hunger relief and at-risk youth ministry of the Presbytery of Charlotte. Children and families will pass baskets after the offering plates to collect this offering. *Doxology (Hymn No. 606) old hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. *Prayer of Dedication and The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Sending Forth *Hymn No. 264 At The Name of Jesus king s weston *Charge and Benediction *Benediction Response Postlude Have Mercy, God, Holy Ghost J.S. Bach A time of personal prayer is offered following both services. If you would like to pray with a pastor and a member of our prayer team, please meet them in the sanctuary overflow area after the 9 a.m. service or in the chapel following the 11 a.m. service. * Please stand if you are able.

5 *Hymn No. 196 Refrain: All glory, laud, and honor to thee, Redeemer, King, to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring! 1 Thou art the King of Israel, thou David s royal Son, who in the Lord s name comest, the King and blessed One. (Refrain) All Glory, Laud, and Honor 3 To thee, before thy passion, they sang their hymns of praise; to thee, now high exalted, our melody we raise. (Refrain) 4 Thou didst accept their praises; accept the prayers we bring, who in all good delightest, thou good and gracious King! (Refrain) 2 The people of the Hebrews with palms before thee went; our praise and prayers and anthems before thee we present. (Refrain) *Hymn No. 264 At The Name of Jesus 1 At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, every tongue confess him King of glory now; tis the Father s pleasure we should call him Lord, who from the beginning was the mighty Word. 2 Humbled for a season to receive a name from the lips of sinners unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious, when from death he passed; 3 Bore it up triumphant, with its human light, through all ranks of creatures, to the central height, to the throne of Godhead, to the Father s breast, filled it with the glory of that perfect rest. 4 Christians, this Lord Jesus shall return again, with his Father s glory o er the earth to reign; for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of glory now.
