Remember this is both our church s magazine and a means of outreach, celebration and support to our local community. From the Rector... The Seasons of Life Come and Go... As we journey on together through the year it is easy to see that the seasons come and go. The seasons of life come and go too. Everything is passing except the love of God. The writer of Ecclesiastes reminds us of this truth in Scripture: A Time for Everything 1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: 2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, 6 a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. God has made everything suitable for its time. I know that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it. + The Seasons of Church life... As a living body (Paul used the image of the Body of Christ), the Church has its own seasons. Seasons of quiet preparation in the bleakness of winter, in the anticipation of the new life of Spring. It has seasons of joy and feasting, as well as seasons of gentle and sustained growth, There are, of course, also seasons of the darkest, coldest winter, 3 where nothing seems alive and we wonder how on earth new life could ever spring forth again from the hard, frozen soil. The Seasons of my life... The seasons of my life come and go, and I note their passing. The cold grey of winter, becomes the sunshine of spring; the bare trees of December are filled by the lush green leaves of June. The seasons of history come and go; empires fall away and leaders process toward obscurity. Fashions change; philosophies wither. Causes fade away. The seasons of my life come and go; yesterday I ran like a child with the optimism of youth, but time moves on. The seasons come and go, but You are still here, Lord of the Seasons. I rest again in the changeless season of your eternal faithfulness. Meditation by Rob Frost The spiritual journey is a marathon of seasons. Sometimes you can hold your own. Sometimes your side aches, you re hot and you can t get your breath. Which season are YOU in? Which season is our CHURCH in? Will Summer ever return? Remember, whatever season you find yourself in, everything is passing, the seasons come and go......remember all things are passing...and all will be well. Grace and peace Jonathan+

Joseph is an experienced teacher and performer and is able to tailor a programme to suit your needs, whether beginner or advanced, young or old. Get in touch! mail@josephfleetwood.co.uk Tel Bishop s Pilgrimage at St Mary s Broughty Ferry Tuesday 12 October 2010 Our chance to shine At the invitation of the Rector of St Mary s, one of the Scottish Bishop s will be making a special Pilgrimage Visit among us. In the visit (Pilgrimage) there will be a chance for the church community to look beyond its own walls and reach out to the local community to make links, and share fellowship with one another and with a member of the College of Bishops. Sadly, our own Bishop, John, is not well enough to be part of the Pilgrimage visit. The pilgrimage will reflect the unique place of our church in the community it serves. E V E N T C A N C E L L E D There are 4 main elements to the pilgrimage visit 1. Prayer 4.15pm Prayer is an important part of the pilgrimage. A short service of prayer will take place at 4.15pm to greet the Bishop s arrival. 2. Parish Visit 5pm The Bishop will visit key people or places that are an important part of the parish. 3. Community Reception: 7pm This is a chance for us to invite key members of your community to meet the Bishop and tell their stories. 4. The Community Celebration Service 7.45pm During this specially written service the we will offer to God, with thanksgiving, our place in the local community, alongside others. There will also be an individual laying on of hands and blessing from the Bishop. HOW YOU CAN HELP... We would like you to let us know who from our local community you think would value an invitation to this very special occasion. If you have suggestions, please let the Rector know ( or jonathanbower@clergy.net) THANK YOU More to follow soon..

6 6 From Bishop John Dear Friends, I am very sorry to have to tell you that because of the state of my health I have just been signed OFF by my GP as unfit for work, and in the next two to three months I will undergo a re-run of some earlier treatment. This means that I will definitely be off sick and will be handing over the day to day running of the Diocese to the dean and chapter. My secretary Jean will handle any general enquiries, but during this time no matter how long it lasts I will not be available to anyone. What Gill and I really need at the moment is privacy. During the course of this period I will very reluctantly have to make a decision about early retirement. The details of when this might happen will be given as soon as any decisions are made. Thank you all for your concern.
