3 Dear Friends, FROM OUR LOCUM MINISTER April 2014 Resurrection is the crux of Christianity and is at the very heart of our faith. The resurrection story shines out on almost every page of the New Testament proclaiming there is a God that cares for each and every one of us. Because of Easter, Jesus is proved to be correct. Jesus does save, and the future of humankind is safely in His hands. Suffering and death have now to be viewed in a totally new light. The evidence that Jesus was raised from death are many. The evidence of the cross, the church, the tomb and the many appearances (of which Paul gives an account in 1st Corinthians 15) all point to the truth of the Easter promise. But head knowledge or a listing of facts will not aid the Christian continue with his or her Pilgrimage. What we need is an encounter and as we turn to welcome Him into our lives we discover to our amazement an inward confirmation that He is indeed alive. Praise the Lord!!! This year we again join with Saint John s and Sandbank in KIRN PARISH CHURCH on Maundy Thursday 17th April 2014 at 7.00pm. God Bless you all, Randolph Scott Locum Minister LENT BIBLE STUDIES Just a reminder that the Lent Bible Studies, led by our Deacon Glenda, continue in St John s Church on Tuesday afternoons at 2.30 pm. Everyone welcome, studies conclude with a cup of tea and biscuits! In the Easter garden the leaves are turning green In the Easter garden the risen Lord is seen In the Easter garden we know that God above Brings us all to heaven through Jesus and his love ( Borrowed from Innellan Parish Magazine) 3
4 Holy Land During Lent our minds travel with Jesus on his final journey towards Jerusalem, and that was where we began our two week sojourn this year. Blessed with blue skies, and unbroken sunshine, temperatures between 20-25C, a small group from Cowal were joined by three friends from Edinburgh, four travellers from the Black Isle and one former member of Holy Trinity, now residing in Lancashire. We followed in the footsteps of Jesus, but took time to meet people along the way - a Messianic believer friend, some secular Jews, Arab Christians living in Israel and the Palestinian friends at Wi am, in Bethlehem. There were three pilgrimage firsts for me - the Baptismal site on the River Jordan east of Jericho is now open; a new 1st century site is being explored at Migdal, just north of Tiberias; and in order to avoid the queue in the Church of the Nativity we were able to join a candle-lit procession from St Catherine s Church, into the Grotto of Jesus birth where we worshipped in Latin and sang Adeste Fideles - a special moment. Towards the end of our visit we were aware of the increased tensions in the region - seeing Israeli Defence soldiers in riot gear confronting a Palestinian demonstration in Bethlehem, shoes being thrown near the Damascus Gate, and realising that over 100,000 Orthodox Jews stopped the traffic in Jerusalem - all three events in protest against recent Israeli Government decisions. The experience of being in the land is always special, but they need our prayers more than ever, not just for peace, but for rain - having had none this winter - their driest since 1927! How we wish we could share some of our rain! Jen Zielinski Support for Palestinians There will be two events in the near future with information about the present situation in Palestine. On Saturday, April 12th, ' The Stones cry out' a film in support of Palestinian Christians will be shown at the Lyle Kirk, 31 Union Street, Greenock PA16 8DD at 2.30pm, and on Thursday, May 8th, at 7.30pm another film, 'Children in Chains' will be shown at St Mun's Church Centre, Brandon Street, Dunoon. Everyone is welcome at either or both events. 4

7 MISSION PARTNER Dr Ruth Shakespeare sends to you her very best wishes for The team have successfully completed a tree planting project with children being involved from the mission primary and secondary school. The new trees are enjoying the rain but this season also beings thunderstorms and long power outages but thankfully the hospital now benefits from some solar power and a new generator so the staff can maintain a good standard of patient care. Indeed, after an inspection by the Ministry of Health Infection Prevention Team the hospital passed with flying colours. The economic situation continues to deteriorate however and fundraising remains a key priority for the management. On a happier note, I am delighted to report that Ruth will be getting married in April to Ken, who works in the tea industry in Mulanje. The couple are planning a Malawian-style wedding in their Mission Church. On behalf of the office bearers and members of Kirn Parish Church, I have sent a letter of congratulations to the happy couple sending also our love and best wishes for a long, happy, healthy and rewarding life together. Indications are that photographs will follow and one will be selected to accompany my next report. Please continue to remember Ruth, Ken and her dedicated team in your prayers. B.M. INVERECK CARE HOME Most of you know of the work of Invereck Care Home and the fact that it cares for elderly residents, many of whom are increasingly frail and requiring much attention. Presently, any new residents are those suffering from dementia, a problem that seems to be increasing with our aging population. There exists a small team of volunteers from the various churches in Dunoon who assist with fund raising for the home, provide parties at Christmas and in the summer and generally spend time with the residents. Kirn Church does not presently have a volunteer on this group, so if anyone feels they can help please speak to Marion Fyfe who will be happy to put you in touch with the present chairperson - thank you. 7
