2 Opening letter from Rev d Rosemary Dear Friends, Over the Summer, we have been welcoming many visitors to the Sunday Eucharist, Bread Basket, Concerts and some just to enjoy a short peaceful time in our Quiet Garden. It is an excellent backdrop to our sermon series on the Epistle to the Ephesians. This Epistle opens with one of the most beautiful passages in the Bible. The first three chapters deal with Christian unity what unites and what divides us and how our divisions are of our own making. Our experience with visitors of many nationalities and beliefs has been an excellent example of the great camaraderie we all enjoy when we don t put up artificial barriers. At one concert Mexican and American visitors obviously enjoyed both the music and our beautiful church with one visitor communicating through pictures on his ipad. Spoken language is no barrier at St Columba s! Many have shared their talents musically or by making crafts and sweets for sale in our fundraising efforts for our new heating system. We are very grateful to them, all who have performed in our Concerts and others who have researched and planned the heating project. If we are successful in our grant application, it is hoped that the new heating will be installed in September. It will be brilliant to make St Columba s Church building just as welcoming in the winter as it has been this Summer. Our fundraising has not stopped with ourselves. All donations received at Bread Basket on the third Wednesday of each month are donated to charity. Recently Christian Aid, the Aberlour Trust and the local branch of Marie Curie have been supported. As an Eco-congregation, during September leading up to our celebration of thanksgiving for Harvest, we will be considering Creation Care. As in previous years we will collect for the Skye Food Bank rather than bring fresh food and vegetables to Harvest Festival. As a small congregation great things have been achieved. Let us continue to go forward in strength and unity working to build God s Kingdom on earth In Christ, Rosemary St Columba s Newsletter August - September 2018 Page 2

3 St Columba s Summer Music Festival, June August 2018 Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet; Praise Him with the lute and harp! Praise Him with the timbrel and dance; Praise Him with stringed instruments and organs.! Praise Him with loud cymbals; Praise Him with clashing cymbals! Psalm 150 Well, we ve certainly been doing that! In a moment of brilliance Rosemary came up with the idea of this event. In it s infancy this year we have had to deal with the I didn t know it was on or I don t like that sort of thing or the World Cup s on tonight on the telly! syndrome. In spite of all the negatives we have already had some really superb concerts, starting in June with our own, homegrown concert of local musicians and certainly enjoyed the sound of the trumpet and the other brass instruments as well. We had local singers with songs ranging from Irish folk via English Baroque to Viennese operetta and of course it all kicked off in the Square with the local pipers who thrilled us with their stirring tunes. Also in June we enjoyed four young professional trombonists Aeris Brass who gave a rich and varied programme, enjoyed by a small, but hugely appreciative, audience. July began with an organ recital. Professor David Smith is internationally acclaimed, has given masterclasses across Europe as well as for the Royal College of Organists in King s College Chapel, University of Aberdeen. Although constantly in demand as a recitalist, David gave of his time and talent, free, to help with our heating fundraising efforts. To those of those who attended, the experience was unforgettable! We looked and listened and thought Is that really our organ that is producing that wonderful sound? Believe me, having to follow that on a Sunday morning is a truly humbling experience. I was glad it was Satsuki and not me! Another concert in July, from Duncan MacKay although with classical content, again showing what our St Columba s organ can do, but this time with the addition of much electronic wizardry and an eclectic mix from classical to film, traditional Gaelic to traditional jazz, modern sacred and just modern! If you have not been to any of the concerts, so far then there is still time! On the 26th July at 2.30pm, we have a unique experience in store for you. Entitled A Bundle of Bungards it features three generations of the same family one of them extremely well known to you it is set to be an afternoon to remember. 4 St Columba s Summer Music Festival - continued Young Amy and Megan both sing and play the flute, Amy has recently been awarded a girl s choristership at Ely Cathedral Their father Jonathan has had many years experience of church music having sung in the choirs of Truro Cathedral, St John s College, Cambridge, St George s, Windsor Castle and Westminster Cathedral as well being as a founder member of the EXAUDI vocal ensemble and having performed with most of the leading British choirs. Jonathan, currently a Director of Music at a Hertfordshire Prep School also plays cello and piano. His partner Sarah is a flautist who has played with many of Britain's leading orchestras. Granny, Rosemary is the Episcopalian Priest on Skye who previously conducted the Skye and Lochalsh Orchestra and taught music at Portree High School. This is a not to be missed opportunity so came along, be entranced and remember to bring your friends.. and so to August.. On Friday, 24 th August at 7.30pm there will be a concert by a young professional bassoonist, Alanna Macfarlane accompanied by David Briegham, Director of Music, Queen Victoria School, Dunblane, on piano and clarinet. Again, Alanna and David will be giving of their time and talents free so do come along and give them your support and us a donation. We are also anticipating a recital by Rhona and Chris but, at the time of going to press, this has still to be finalised so, watch this space! The concerts all have refreshments at the interval. A new departure was bubbly (non-alcoholic of course) and nibbles and this seems to go down well let us know what you think. You will also have seen our fund-raising sales table at the back of the church. There are some sensationally beautiful depictions of the church s memorial window with details of their contents printed on an insert. They have been selling well but, if you haven t bought yours yet, just remember how cold St Columba s gets in the winter (not to mention the spring and the autumn!). All these concerts depend on you, to support them, to help with catering and to help with publicising them, so, do join the small team who are working so hard on your behalf. You ll enjoy the experience and, we promise, we ll not ask you to sing! And so, let me finish where I began, with the last line of Psalm 150, Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. 5 St Columba s Summer Music Festival - photos Heating Update The grant application has passed through the Canon 35 process and the diocese and has been submitted to Edinburgh. So far so good! Fundraising now stands about 3000 St Columba s Newsletter August - September 2018 Page 5

6 St Columba s Feast Day Celebrations St Columba s, Portree celebrated our Patronal Feast with the Eucharist followed by blessing the garden behind the Rectory as a Quiet Garden available for use by all in the town. A team of lads from Justice Department Pay Back cleared the old vegetable garden area whilst other volunteers have developed a flower garden, cut grass and pruned back trees. We are very grateful for all the hard work. Our Mission Seed money has provided seating in two areas and will be used to develop a Japanese Garden area under some trees. Biblical verses are being inscribed onto slates around the garden which we hope to register with the Quiet Garden Trust. Following the blessing, we celebrated with a bring and share lunch - a magnificent spread! St Columba s Newsletter August - September 2018 Page 6

7 Diocesan Retreat at College of the Holy Spirit, Cumbrae Diocesan Retreat at College of the Holy Spirit, Cumbrae Exploring the Fruit of the Spirit through Creative Bible Journaling Monday 29th October Thursday 1st November Led by the Rev Jane MacLaren Explore the Fruit of the Spirit What does it really mean when we talk about the fruit of the Spirit? This retreat will help us creatively explore what Paul is talking about in Galatians 5. As we consider the questions we find a life-transforming way of thinking and acting, bring freedom and joy. Far from being another list of Biblical to-dos, the fruit of the Spirit help us make sense of life, ourselves, and the world all around us, giving us renewed hope. Looking at each of the fruit in turn, we will use words, colours, images and the scenery all around us at Cumbrae to study and journal with them. Whether you like reading, writing, painting, crafting, photography or simply going for a quiet walk alone there will be something for everyone with time and space to explore in your own way. A focus for the retreat will be the chance to engage in creative Bible journaling. Workshops on simple creative techniques and a room full of materials will be provided. Every retreatant will receive their own journaling pack to use at Cumbrae and take home afterwards. This will include study notes and journaling prompts on the nine fruits of the Spirit, a soft-backed journal, inspiring supplies to help you get going with some creativity, and additional goodies! There will also be facility for printing your own photos to use in your journaling via a laptop or from a memory stick. Creative Bible Journaling is a great way to deepen your relationship with God, study the Bible and enjoy using colour and image as you study His word. You don t need to be artistic just prepared to explore using colours, pictures, cutting, sticking, or experimenting with paint or photographs. It s a chance to play as well as pray. The two are a powerful combination. By using colour and images, and by engaging in calming activity such as cutting, sticking and spreading paint, we can enter a zone where our brains are operating on a different level. From this place we can often see things from a different perspective and find new truths about ourselves and God. St Columba s Newsletter August - September 2018 Page 7
