1 News Events Worship Social July 2017 News from the Ministry Team. Dear Friends, We have seen some dreadful things happening in this country in the last few weeks. A suicide bomber targeting a concert attended largely by children and young people, a knife attack in Borough Market in London, and a tower block full of people destroyed by fire. By the time you read this there may be others to add! I am struggling. I am struggling to hold what I have seen and heard. Daily I am assailed by news; Daily I struggle to absorb it, to drink the cup of other people's suffering. It can be difficult to know how to respond. For many of us there is a desire to help and in this age of technology it has become easier for those of us who are not on the spot to contribute to quickly set up response groups; giving money or the necessities of life which are suddenly lacking, and we mourn with those who mourn, and we pray. Let my inner eye run with tears: When I see the hungry, when I hear of violent death, when peace talks fail. Of course it would have been better if none of these things had happened; but they did, and out of the midst of death, violence and destruction, amazing stories have emerged. The homeless man who's gut instinct was to run to help after he had been knocked over by the force of the Manchester blast. PTO
2 I don't suppose I was the only one who had tears in their eyes as I read the account of how a woman died in his arms, and how he was later reunited with his own mother. And what about the Romanian baker who hit one of the terrorists in Borough Market with a crate before giving people shelter inside; or the Muslims who raised the alarm in Grenfell Tower - awake early because of the Ramadan fast, or the student who stopped to help on the way to an exam, or the churches who opened their doors to serve in whatever way was needed. But let my soul sing: when I hear of courage and creativity; when I see adversity overcome; when the story is of sacrifice and service. I was asked not long ago whether I think God is at work when I see someone who is not a Christian doing something for the greater good - my answer - yes - without a doubt. Genesis chapter one says that all people are made in the image of God. Some people warp that image, some people reflect it. Let s give thanks that even in the horror of recent events there are people, sometimes unlikely people, who show us what God is like, and where he is to be found. (Poetry extracts from Barefoot Prayers by Stephen Cherry) Hilary WAREHAM FOOD BANK Please remember that the Parish Office is a collection point for the Wareham Food Bank. 8 To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing. This quote by Martin Luther goes to the very heart of our faith. Prayer is the primary means by which we speak to our heavenly Father and keep our relationship with him alive. As we pray in the Lord s prayer, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven, our aim as Christians is to do God s will on earth. How will we know what that is if we do not communicate with him, asking what it is he wants of us? Praying in Church, being led by an intercessor, is good and helpful, praying on our own each day in a daily quiet time is essential, but it is also good to gather with others to pray more openly together. To this end please join me in our prayer meeting on the first Saturday of the month, 9am to 10am in St Edward s chapel, Lady St Mary Church. I hope that you will consider joining me; each month there will be a different theme, and prayers will be interspersed with devotional songs. It is my hope that this will be a way in which we can begin to build up the Church and see the way ahead for our parish and Church Family in this area. More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of. Alfred Lord Tennyson Simon Next prayer meeting Saturday 1st July 2017 Wareham s Church of England Family is made up of the following five churches: St Martin-on-the-Walls, Wareham St Nicholas, Arne St John the Evangelist, East Holme Whichever church you choose to visit, you can be sure of a warm welcome Members of our Team are available for confidential help, support and advice.
