Baptism for Children Age 3 Months through Age 6 If your child was not baptized as a newborn infant, you are encouraged to bring him or her for baptism on one of our regularly scheduled baptism dates. Remaining scheduled baptism dates for 2017 will be celebrated on August 12th & 13th, and November 18th & 19th. Readiness to have your child baptized involves registering at the parish, attending mass faithfully for at least four months, and participating in baptism preparation classes. Registration for the classes and attendance at two sessions by parents and godparents is required. To make arrangements for baptism, please call Norma at Bible Basics Bible Basics, led by Fr. Mark Bentz, is open to all parishioners as well as those who are coming to explore the faith and prepare to become Catholic. 2 Pastor s Corner What s the big deal about the Ascension? We hear in the psalm today, God mounts his throne to shouts of joy, a blare of trumpets for the Lord! This is what is happening on the Ascension. Jesus suffered and died on the cross, offering himself as a spotless offering for our sins, then descended to the realm of the dead to free the righteous who were waiting, and then rose from the dead, conquering the power of death. But, the paschal mystery is not complete until Christ ascends into heaven taking a host of captives with him. The Ascension is Christ s glorious entry into heaven, which had been closed since the sin of Adam and Eve. And not only Christ enters, but all the righteous who had died since the beginning of the world enter with Him, giving all of us hope to follow where Christ our head has gone before us. Once he has entered heaven, he reigns definitively over heaven and earth and sends forth the Holy Spirit to give life to the Church, his body. As you may have been counting, Ascension day was actually this last Thursday (40 days after Easter Sunday), but the local church (archdiocese of Portland) regularly transfers the feast to Sunday to allow more people to participate in this great mystery. It is sadly a sign that we don t live in a Christian country that takes national holidays on important church celebrations. Even our own Holy Father Francis decided this year to celebrate the Ascension on Sunday for the benefit of the local Roman people. Let us pray for a renewal of Catholic culture in our world so that one day we can celebrate feast days on their proper days again! Speaking of renewal next weekend is Pentecost! As a parish, I encourage everybody to pray the novena to the Holy Spirit (even if you missed the first couple days), and then come to First Friday adoration at 6pm to pray for a new outpouring of grace in our parish. 12 men filled with the Holy Spirit changed the world forever; imagine what a couple hundred people animated by God s fire can do! That s the vision we should have for a parish: a community of Spirit-filled believers. St. Thomas Aquinas tells us that grace is received according to the mode of the receiver, which means that although the sacraments are effective in themselves, they also give actual graces for our benefit which only have power in our life to the degree that we are open to them. Prayer prepares our heart to receive God s indwelling Spirit more fully and read 1st Corinthians 12 if you want to know what some of those graces can look like! Let us then, pray with the disciples in these days, Come Holy Spirit, and renew the face of the earth! Blessings, Fr. 4 St. Alice Celebration on the Feast of CORPUS CHRISTI Sunday PENTECOST PRAYER SERVICE St. Alice Catholic Church 1520 E St., Springfield, Oregon Friday, June 2 nd, :00 to 7:00 p.m. Planning is underway for our annual St. Alice Celebration! This year, our celebration will be held on the Feast of Corpus Christi. We will begin with a 10:00 a.m. All-community mass and a Eucharistic Procession followed by good food, music, and fun. CCS is hiring! Catholic Community Services of Lane County is expanding the team to add an organized and experienced part-time Development Assistant to focus on event coordination. This person will work closely with CCS staff and volunteers to put on a variety of events, including an annual fundraising breakfast, donor receptions and volunteer appreciation dinner. Archbishop Sample and Bishop Cary are very concerned about SB 494. The Oregon Catholic Conference has done a tremendous amount of research and consultation with various experts about this bill. It introduces changes in the law that will erode protections for vulnerable people at the end of life. Please call and urge your local Senator Lee Beyer to vote NO on SB 494. We need to get at least 25 voters from his district to contact him and urge him to vote NO on SB 494. This past month we were able to help children from Guy Lee, Riverbend, Maple, Douglas Gardens and Centennial Schools. It is greatly appreciated. With Payless Shoe stores closing we were able to purchase 25 pairs of sport shoes at a discount price. These shoes will be used this next year. We have learned what the most asked for sizes are. Our supply of underwear, both boys and girls is dwindling. If you're out shopping and see a good deal we can always use underwear, especially boys. Thank you for all you do for the children of our community.
