2 Pastor s Corner Happy New Year! Advent begins a new Church year, and the start of a new Cycle of Scripture Readings. Last Year we went through the Gospel of Matthew; this year, we are going through Mark. What is Advent all about? It comes from the Latin Adventus, which means coming. The Catechism reminds us that, When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior s first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming. (CCC 524) We enter into the living memory of Christ s first coming in the flesh, so that our hearts may be inflamed with longing for His return in glory. We need to prepare our hearts for Jesus coming. Sometimes, like our homes, our hearts can get cluttered because we never do deep cleaning. We need to take some time and evaluate our activities and our desires so that Jesus isn t 4th or 5th in our lives, but number 1! If something in your life is more important than Jesus, consider giving it up for Advent make room for the coming of Jesus! I realized that my freetime is often wasted in front of a screen instead of prayer or good works. So I am fasting from screens for Advent. Please pray for me it s going to be hard! But, if we want Jesus to be first, we have to be willing to make sacrifices. Athletes deny themselves all sorts of things and they do it for a crown that perishes, but we for an everlasting crown (1 Cor 9:25) Now, Advent is not the same character as Lent, but it is still a penitential season it s why we wear violet. Before any great feast in the Church, there is a period of preparation, fasting and prayer. By self-denial, we come to grow in our desire for heaven. Consider what the Lord is asking of you to give up for Advent, so as to be more filled with His love at Christmas! Also, please make a plan to go to confession at least once during this season. We ve included a bulletin flyer list of all the penance services in Eugene/ Springfield as well as their regular confession times, so you have no excuse there are plenty of options for you to choose from! Let s examine our consciences, clean the stables, and make room in our hearts for the King! God Bless you, Fr. Mark POPE FRANCIS PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR DECEMBER Universal: For the elderly That the elderly, sustained by families and Christian communities, may apply their wisdom and experience to spreading the faith and forming the new generations.

To reserve tickets, please call or sisters@olpretreat.org This is a fundraiser SW 170th Ave., Beaverton The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) 2017 The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) 2017 is on Monday 25th December which follows the 4th Sunday of Advent 24th December. There have been some questions with regard to the obligations of these Holy days. The Archdiocese has determined that each obligation must be met by attendance at one of the Masses of the Sunday and one of the Holy day. That is, a Christmas Mass on the evening of Sunday 24th December (Vigil or Night) will not satisfy the obligation for 4th Sunday of Advent. There are two distinct obligations: that of 4th Sunday of Advent which can be met by attendance at anticipatory Masses on Saturday 23rd December or the morning Masses of Sunday 24th December; and that of Christmas which can be met by attendance at Masses on Christmas Eve (Vigil or Night) and that of Christmas Day.
