2 Pastor s Corner Thank you for your continued prayers for me during my time away for continuing education and retreat. Know that I carry all of you in my heart during these days. This weekend, our Philippino community celebrates the feast of Santo Niño (The Holy Child Jesus). When Pope Francis visited Manila in 2015, he commented on this devotion: The image of the Holy Child Jesus accompanied the spread of the Gospel in this country [the Philippines] from the beginning. Dressed in the robes of a king, crowned and holding the sceptre, the globe and the cross, he continues to remind us of the link between God s Kingdom and the mystery of spiritual childhood. He tells us this in today s Gospel: Whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God like a child will not enter it (Mk 10:15) Today Saint Paul has told us that in Christ we have become God s adopted children, brothers and sisters in Christ. This is who we are. This is our identity. God chose and blessed us for a purpose: to be holy and blameless in his sight (Eph 1:4) But the Bible tells us that the great threat to God s plan for us is, and always has been, the lie. The devil is the father of lies. Often he hides his snares behind the appearance of sophistication, the allure of being modern, like everyone else. He distracts us with the view of ephemeral pleasures, superficial pastimes. And so we squander our God-given gifts by tinkering with gadgets; we squander our money on gambling and drink; we turn in on ourselves. We forget to remain focused on the things that really matter. We forget to remain, at heart, children of God. That is sin: to forget, at heart, that we are children of God. For children, as the Lord tells us, have their own wisdom, which is not the wisdom of the world. That is why the message of the Santo Niño is so important. He speaks powerfully to all of us. He reminds us of our deepest identity, of what we are called to be as God s family. The Santo Niño also reminds us that this identity must be protected When he came into the world, his very life was threatened by a corrupt king. Jesus himself needed to be protected. He had an earthly protector: Saint Joseph. He had an earthly family, the Holy Family of Nazareth. So he reminds us of the importance of protecting our families, and those larger families which are the Church, God s family, and the world, our human family. Sadly, in our day, the family all too often needs to be protected against insidious attacks and programs contrary to all that we hold true and sacred, all that is most beautiful and noble in our culture. In the Gospel, Jesus welcomes children, he embraces them and blesses them (Mk 10:16). We too need to protect, guide and encourage our young people, helping them to build a society worthy of their great spiritual and cultural heritage. Specifically, we need to see each child as a gift to be welcomed, cherished and protected. And we need to care for our young people, not allowing them to be robbed of hope and condemned to life on the streets. (Francis, Homily 18th Jan. 2015) What a great meditation for us to chew on! I think it very appropriate as we pray this week in a special way for an end to abortion in our nation and our world. The March for Life in Washington D.C. happened this last Friday and the Walk for life in San Francisco will be going on this week to encourage all of us to continue to pray and work toward a civilization of love that finds abortion unthinkable. May the scourge of Roe vs. Wade and the culture of death soon end! Santo Niño de Cebu have mercy on us! Fr. Mark POPE FRANCIS PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR JANUARY Evangelization: Religious Minorities in Asia That Christians, and other religious minorities in Asian countries, may be able to practice their faith in full freedom.

7 Pastoral Council Issues Draft Mission Statement and Initiates Comment Period on St. Alice Parish MISSION STATEMENT DRAFT Good things don t always happen quickly and such is the case with the time and talent poured into our St. Alice Parish draft mission statement. You may remember that in July, we convened a meeting of Parish leadership who brainstormed from many different and relevant perspectives to create several concise and poignant draft mission statements. These drafts were placed before the Pastoral Council to synthesize, edit, and ultimately bring forward a unified draft mission statement for parishioners to consider, with the goal of adoption of the official St. Alice Catholic Church Mission Statement by the Pastoral Council at its meeting on January 24, You may ask, Why does a church need a mission statement? The answer to this question is similar to the answer that might be given by a business or any service organization: to establish a yardstick by which all of St. Alice s programs, projects, and initiatives can be measured to assure that we are focusing the church s time, talents, and resources in a way that will accomplish our parish s priorities. After several months of discussion, synthesis, and editing, the Pastoral Council presents the following draft mission statement in both English and Spanish for your review and comment: Seek Jesus, build relationships, and show all of Springfield the way to Heaven. Busca a Jesus, construye Relaciónes, y muestra a todo Springfield el camino al Cielo. The Pastoral Council asks that you prayerfully consider this proposed mission statement from the perspective of your primary language and offer your comments and/or suggestions to the Pastoral Council by January 22nd. You may send your comments via to Peg Ries, Pastoral Council chair, at grammy3xpeg@comcast.net, or drop your comments in the Pastoral Council s Comment Box in the vestibule. A sub-committee of the Pastoral Council will document and review all comments submitted and present a recommendation to the entire Pastoral Council for adoption of the official St. Alice Catholic Church mission statement at its meeting on January 24, Sincerely, Members of the St. Alice Pastoral Council Peg Ries, Chair Members: Lourdes, Mendez, Jesus Aguilar, Francisco Garcia, Cornelio Garibay, Dave Haggard, Marvin Jarvis, Simon Manuel, Maria Morey, Maricela Ochoa, Angela Stout, Gustavo Torres, Maria Elena Vargas, and Lisa Wasson
