Baptism for Children Age 3 Months through Age 6 If your child was not baptized as a newborn infant, you are encouraged to bring him or her for baptism on one of our regularly scheduled baptism dates. Remaining scheduled baptism dates for 2017 will be celebrated on November 18th & 19th. Readiness to have your child baptized involves registering at the parish, attending mass faithfully for at least four months, and participating in baptism preparation classes. Registration for the classes and attendance at two sessions by parents and godparents is required. 2 Pastor s Corner Thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday this last week; I feel very blessed to celebrate another trip around the sun with all of you! I am grateful to God for the gift of being among you as your shepherd, and even more grateful to God for the supreme gift of being a priest for 4 years now! In that short time, I ve gotten to serve at 3 parishes, celebrate a bunch of weddings and funerals, a couple hundred baptisms, thousands of confessions, and over 2000 masses! Thanks be to God! Birthdays always cause me to reflect on the meaning of life, and how I ve been living (or not) according to the will of God. It s important for us to take stock of things from time to time, because every day is a gift and we don t have any guarantees that tomorrow will be here so we need to live our lives to the full for Jesus today and not wait for tomorrow to get started! If we re not ready to meet Jesus today, if our hearts are weighed down with anger or selfish desire, let s not put off confession any longer Jesus wants you to be filled with peace, not resentment and regrets and addictions. If you lay your burdens at His feet in confession you will know what real freedom is like! I was also thinking of Hurricane Harvey this past week, as I m sure many of you were it struck close to home because my brother and his wife (and baby) live in Cuero, Texas. Like thousands of others, they had to flee their home with little more than the clothes on their back because of the rapid change in severity of the storm. They are still in shock, not really knowing what they re going to go back to or how long it will take to get back to normal. They are just like you and me, living their lives, going about their day, and then, in an instant, everything that was secure and routine was upended. It s in tragedy and suffering that we are forced to recognize the truly important things amidst all the business and relative comfort of our lives. It s a wake-up call that none of us want, but one that we all need in order to order our lives around a life of holiness and Christian charity instead of stuff and success. Thankfully, my brother and sister-in-law s faith is very strong and they have a good support network of friends and family when they go back but many are not so fortunate. The U.S. bishops have asked us to help support relief efforts for the state of Texas, which will be ongoing for a while. If you ve been asking, How can I help?, the most effective means is to donate either to Catholic Charities (the official outreach arm of the Catholic Church domestically) via our second collection, or through the Knights of Columbus online at Both organizations give 100% to the relief effort, unlike some others that may take a cut off the top. Beware of scams that inevitably pop up during crisis and please only give through long-established means so that your financial support can be the most effective on the ground. It s in times of adversity that the Church shows its true colors, and I hope you will all join me in prayer and sacrifice for those in need. Let s not be mere bystanders, but unite in prayer and action for the good of the wider Church. God Bless you, Fr. If you or someone you know is being drawn by Jesus to love and follow him more closely, then come join the St. Alice Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) where you can learn more about the Catholic faith, deepen your own personal faith and spiritual life, draw closer to brothers and sisters in Christ, and support one another in growing in God s love. Those who have not yet received the sacraments of initiation (baptism, first eucharist, and/or confirmation) will prepare for these sacraments through the RCIA, which begins Thursday, September 28 th from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. in the Education Center. Thanks so much for your help and understanding! CHURCH CLEAN-UP Hope everyone is having a great summer, the weather has been great and the fruits and vegetables have been fabulous. We will be starting up our monthly church clean-up in September. We will be cleaning on Saturday, September 9th from 9-11am. The group that will be cleaning will be the Greeters, we will meet in the church. All are welcome to come and participate. Just bring yourself and we will provide the rest. Many hands make light work. Together we can do great things for OUR church. AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS Three AED devices have been installed at St. Alice; one in the vestibule of the church, one in the Parish Office, and one in the lobby of the Education Center. It is my firm belief that if we make the Eucharist the focus of our day, all our other ministries will bear much greater fruit not only in the community, but also in our own personal lives. To give witness to the importance of the Mass as a parish, we are adjusting our office hours so that we won t be open during mass thereby giving our staff the opportunity to attend Mass daily if they wish. It is a small but significant step to make Jesus our number one priority in everything.

6 VIDEO CAMERA INSTALLATION VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Parish volunteers installing the video cameras need more helpers. Spaghetti Dinner resumes October 4th! It is time again to start planning for Spaghetti Dinner at St. Alice, held on the first Wednesday of each month from October through May. We are looking for a willing team of volunteers in order to continue this fun and tasty tradition. The following helpers are needed: 9:00 to 10:00 am Make the sauce 3:30-5:00 pm Set up meal 5:00 to 6:30 pm Serve dinner 6:00 to 7:30 pm Clean up And a substitute list... Parish 2017/2018 Calendar The 2017/2018 Parish Calendar has been posted on the website covering events from August 2017 through July Some standing events may have been adjusted for Holy Day Masses or other special events. The staff did their best efforts to adjust any event affected by a scheduling issue. All ministries are encouraged to review the calendar to ensure they have the latest schedule. Any adjustments needed should be made through Kathy in the Parish Office. For ministries that haven t submitted event dates yet, you are encouraged to so by the end of August.
