2 Pastor s Corner This weekend we hear two readings that show us the biblical foundations for the office of the pope. We hear Jesus declaring that Peter is the Rock on which he will build his ecclesia, his Church. Jesus came to establish a Church! And that Church is the One, holy, Catholic, and apostolic church which needs visible authority to maintain it. That s why Jesus also promises to give keys to the kingdom of heaven to Peter that can both bind and loose. The keys of the kingdom we see referenced in the passage from Isaiah. A king would give the keys of the kingdom to the royal steward, the second in command to the king. When the king was gone, the royal steward could make decisions on the king s behalf until he returned. On his uniform, the steward would have keys on his shoulder as a sign of his authority. Jesus, as the royal king of kings, by giving the keys to the kingdom to Peter, is making Peter his second-in-command, invested with His own authority until Jesus comes back at the end of time! Pretty amazing. Since Jesus intended his church to continue beyond Peter s lifetime, this office of steward, which we call the papacy, was handed on to another after Peter s death. The keys were handed on to the next person in his role, and when he died, the next, and so on until our present day they have been given to our holy Father Pope Francis. It s why the Vatican flag has keys on it! What does that authority look like? Well, to bind and to loose in Jewish times meant the ability to interpret halakha, or Jewish purity laws regarding sins. It also was the authority to expel members of the community for misconduct or reinstate them. Only the chief rabbis or the Sanhedrin could do these things, so Jesus is establishing Peter as the new high priest and teacher who can interpret the moral law and maintain order. This is important, because in matters of faith and morals, if there is an argument (as there often is throughout the church s history), the pope has the ability to settle disputes if he declares something definitively regarding faith and morals. The doctrine of papal infallibility was defined at the first Vatican council. This doesn t mean that everything the pope says is infallible, but only when he is speaking in his role as Peter in a solemn declaration (in an official document) regarding the faith or moral practice. As such, popes have typically not used this power very often. (a handful of times in the entirety of church history, e.g. defining the dogmas of the immaculate conception and assumption of Mary) Instead, popes have typically preferred to rely upon the ordinary magisterial process of declaring things in the context of church councils in union with all the bishops throughout the world. What if someone doesn t like the pope or what he says sometimes? Well, St. Catherine of Siena, one of my favorite saints, was not shy in telling the pope when he was making poor decisions (in her time, the pope was living in Avignon, France and neglecting the needs of Rome and the people). However, she would often say that the pope is The sweet Christ on earth and she meant it! She understood the scriptural meaning that the pope has been given the role of visible headship of the Church, with the authority of Christ until the second coming. She knew that the pope would make mistakes in his everyday life and she would correct him when needed (he is human after all), but that ultimately she owed him her love and respect even when she disagreed with him. It s something for us to reflect on and a good reminder when we need to correct anyone in our life, whether it be family, friend, priest, or pope do we see them as the sweet Christ on earth and love them into the truth? Or do we simply want to be right? Let s pray for our holy Father, that he may continue to be a good shepherd and rightly bind and loose for the good of the Church! God s Blessings, Fr. Mark POPE FRANCIS PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR AUGUST Universal: For artists That artists of our time, through their ingenuity, may help everyone discover the beauty of creation

Those who have not yet received the sacraments of initiation (baptism, first eucharist, and/or confirmation) will prepare for these sacraments through the RCIA, which begins Thursday, September 28 th from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. in the Education Center. Type in this parish code VVWGPT And enjoy full access to life changing content. Compliments of ST. ALICE CATHOLIC CHURCH. NEW OFFICE HOURS Effective immediately! Monday: 9am-4pm Tuesday: 1pm-4pm (please note later open time) Wednesday: 9am-4pm Thursday: 9am-4pm Friday: 9am-4pm Closed Daily for Lunch: 12pm-1pm NEW OFFICE HOURS EXPLAINED The Eucharist is the source and summit of our lives as Catholics. It is my firm belief that if we make the Eucharist the focus of our day, all our other ministries will bear much greater fruit not only in the community, but also in our own personal lives. To give witness to the importance of the Mass as a parish, we are adjusting our office hours so that we won t be open during mass thereby giving our staff the opportunity to attend Mass daily if they wish. It is a small but significant step to make Jesus our number one priority in everything.
