The Rector s Letter Grace to you and peace. On February 6 th, the Archbishop and Mrs Neill joined us for a wonderful Service during which he celebrated and preached at Holy Communion. During the Service he performed an Act of Dedication on our newly finished Columbarium. It looked fantastic and thanks are due to Hazel and Colin for all their energy with this project. Thanks also to those who gave the Church a spring clean before his arrival. Following the Service we all went to the Parish Hall for a soup and sandwich lunch. This was a great occasion with the children at their own tables in the middle of the floor. It was a truly all-age event with young and old enjoying the day together. These events are great for getting people together and there were 90 adults plus children in the Hall. How important it is for a Family to come together in fellowship and worship. I would personally like to thank him for his encouraging words towards my ministry among you and in particular his interest in Music Ministry. It takes place on Saturday 5 th at 5 pm this month. Only a week later our heating decided to pack in and so we ended up back down at the Hall for worship. The Sunday School, Creche and main congregation gathered in the same building and it was a great sense of being together. The worship was exciting and uplifting, thanks to all who participated so fully. With a building like ours, maintenance is always ongoing. From the perspective of that other great project, we await a response from An Bord Pleanala concerning our planning permission on the Parish Centre. We hope that we should know a lot more by the April magazine. It is our hope and earnest prayer that this will be a positive response, opening the door for us to proceed with our plans. These plans will, undoubtedly, transform our corporate lives together making it possible to have worship life and social life so much closer together. It will make Sunday School and Creche facilities so much more accessible and attractive to new families coming to the Parish.
The Property Sub-Committee of the Select Vestry continue to work at a pace. Perhaps the biggest single initiative facing the Parish is the appointment of a Youth and Children s Pastor. As at going to press we have advertised the position in the Church Review, on the Church of Ireland Website and on our Parish Website. Initial responses are very positive. It is our wish that the successful candidate would take up their position in September. Fund raising has already started for this. On April 14 th the Parish will hold a Race Nite. This was unanimously agreed by the Select Vestry and we look forward to a great evening of fun and relaxation. Please tell your friends about it as it is important that we have a big turn-out on the night. People love a Race Nite and all the fun that goes with it. Please support this Parish fund-raiser by buying a horse or jockey. These may be purchased from Stuart McConnell ( ) or John Patton ( ). The work of this person is clear and simple, that is, to encourage, develop and work with our children and young people both in a pastoral and a spiritual way. They will work with organisations presently active in our Parish and develop new ways of reaching the young within and beyond our present Parish membership. As is the case each year, these United Dioceses are running two camps at Gurteen Agricultural College. These take place for a week starting 9 th and 16 th July. Applications are available from me. They are great fun and very well run. The first week is for year olds and the second week for year olds. Many young parishioners have attended these for many years. From 25 th 29 th July the Parish is holding a Holiday Club. This is being run by Crosslinks and will be great fun for all who attend. Further details concerning different age groups will follow. The Holiday Club will use the facilities at Greenlanes National School, by kind permission. This is the only Crosslinks Camp in the Dublin Diocese and we hope it will be a great success. Please pray earnestly for this project and its success in its work with the children who will come.
Holiday Clubs are one of the most effective ways of bringing young people and children to know Jesus. On Tuesday, 12 th April, our Easter General Vestry will take place in the Minor Hall. This is the single-most important meeting for our Parish Family in the whole year. It is the occasion when the incoming Select Vestry is elected. Election to the Select Vestry is a great honour in a Parish and with it goes responsibility. We are entering a period of great activity with the new Parish Centre and the prospective sale of the Parish Hall site. Alongside the usual elections of People s Church Warden and People s Glebe Warden, there will be the triennial elections of three Diocesan Synodsmen and four Parochial Nominators. The former represent the Parish Family at Diocesan Synod and the latter represent the Parish during the appointment of a new Incumbent. These seven appointments last for three years and are especially important. Real consideration should be given to who you feel should and could perform those roles well. We have been served extraordinarily well by the seven who fulfilled these roles over the last three years. Please make every effort to attend this meeting. If you wish to nominate someone for any of the above please insure that they have agreed to stand before coming to the meeting. Yours in the Service of Jesus, Derek Youth and Children s Lay Pastor Clontarf Parish, in North Dublin, is seeking to appoint a Youth and Children s Pastor. This is a new and exciting venture for us as a Parish. If you are the type of person who feels that you have a vocation to this ministry, please contact us for application form and further details. Clontarf is an equal opportunities employer. This position would be half-time. The successful candidate would have a level of freedom to build up what has already been started, in conjunction with new initiatives. Contact: A: The Revd. 10 Flower Guild The Flower Guild AGM will be held on Sat. 2nd April at 10.30am. in the Hall. New members are urgently required. No experience is necessary. Suitable dates can be arranged. If you like working with flowers here is an opportunity to fulfill your ambition and serve your parish. B. Gallagher/ I. Acheson Reflection Don t mention the war, said Basil Fawlty, not politically correct. Who could forget the hilarious consequences? But that was comedy. In the real world, it would be true to say that it is strictly non-pc to mention sin. If you must bring it into the equation at all, then couch it with camouflage terms and with any luck, if we don t look at it, it might go away. So, we engage in ostrich tactics. We may thus feel more comfortable but our complacency is but an illusion. We are in the contemplative season of Lent during which there is no getting away from that unpleasant word sin. Indeed, on the contrary, we should be engaged in the exercise of repentance, repentance for our sins of omission and commission. Our thoughts are roads leading to a destination. In Ireland we say that all roads lead to Dublin. In the Christian religious realm, all roads lead to Calvary and that is where our thought paths are headed. We are awed, humbled and thankful that our Saviour, in His body, nailed Sin to the cross, our sin, and triumphed over it, leading us to the Easter experience. There is a thrilling rider to consider in Psalm 103, verse 12, as far the East is from the West, so far has he removed our transgression from us. Unlike us, God not only forgives but he has promised to remember them (our sins) no more. We must remember that this is not a press-button system, rather must each individual choose Calvary as their solution. We are free to choose, bearing in mind that choice leads to consequence. A Maharry.
Greenlanes National School The children returned to school after the half-term well rested and ready for work. On the week beginning 21st Feb there was a great flurry of snow which caused great excitement among the children. We all remember how much we enjoyed throwing snowballs and making snowmen. In the early part of Feb we had to close the school as a result of damage to the ceilings. Thanks to parents and teachers for their understanding. Roll on the good weather when the children can make use of the field. The children continue to put money away for the Leprosy Mission at the Wednesday morning assembly. Assemblies led by the teaching staff every morning are a great success. Thank you teachers for the effort you have put into these. D. Sargent. Clontarf Girl Guides Brownies, Ladybirds and Guides held the Annual Thinking Day Ceremony in the Parish Hall on Wednesday 23 rd February. Approximately 40 adults and children attended to celebrate the joint birthdays of our founders, Lord and Lady Baden Powell. We are all working hard on badgework at the moment and a number of guides and brownies have completed first aid, entertainer and crime prevention badges. Ladybirds are full for this session but there are a few spaces for both guides and brownies. M. Watts. 12 th Company BB Anchor Boys The boys continue with their badge-work and are preparing for the Annual Display which takes place at the end of April. Junior Section We had a great time bowling last month, plenty of fun was had by all. The boys are working hard at their figure marching for the competition on 26th February. Please wish them luck.
Stories of Noah and his Ark abound for the Scripture Exam, which will take place in early March. Badge-work continues with lovely reports from home of boys helping about the house. We have been treated to oil paints, bird nest boxes and rain gauges all in the name of achievements. We look forward to a visit to the Church to participate in, and learn from, some interesting activities. Dates for the Easter break will be finalised over the next couple of weeks. H. Cassidy. Clontarf Badminton Club Play resumed after the Christmas break but once again we were dogged by injuries. We have had to disband the Ladies Team for this reason. Our Men s Team have only played two matches so the next couple of weeks are crucial for them. Club nights are not being attended well, but hopefully the numbers will increase soon. Why not come along and enjoy the friendship and the fun. Clontarf Junior Badminton Club The Junior Club is flourishing and they are about to commence their tournament. Good luck to all involved. New members are always welcome. We d love to see you. P. Watts Young Women s Group We are not meeting in March. We meet on 21st April when we are going bowling. A great evening was had by all in the Parish Hall on Thursday 17 th February. The subject was aroma-therapy and refreshments took place afterwards. Thanks to Lesley s Beauty Salon for the demonstration. B. Sargent / H McCullagh. GB Past Members Our next meeting will be combined with Mothers Union on Thursday 3 rd March - Mrs Jean Jago. April meeting on 7 th an evening with Paul Robson. April 28 th 40 th year celebrations: Howth Yacht Club lunch. More details to follow later. I. McMullen.

It is hoped that all members will attend. Competitions continue apace. New members are always welcome so why not give it a shot. Fun Bowls Party at the Parish Hall E. Maude Sunday School The year moves forward and we have begun trying out the Scripture Union Splash course with all our classes. Rev d Derek, Aisling Cassidy and I attend the Sunday School where Rev d Anne Taylor took up the post of Youth and Children s Ministry development Officer for the Sunday School Society. The commissioning Service was lead by the Archbishop, the Most Rev. Dr. John Neill. The service was child-centred and the Rathfarnham Junior Choir lead the singing. The Bible story told at the service was about David and Goliath and there was a little verse at the end of this reading, which children would appreciate. The moral of this story is: never back a loser! Even if he s ten-foot tall, and built like a bruiser! Listen to the Lord your God; he ll show you what to do! It s too late for Goliath, but there s still a chance for you!
The Brainarama 2005 organised by the Sunday School Society, takes place on Sunday 27 th February at 3 pm in St. Andrew s College. Our Parish hope to enter team/s for this fun day. It greatly enjoyed by those children who took part last year and all our teams did so well. The quiz includes questions about the Bible, picture puzzles and refreshments. Children will meet at the Parish Hall at 2.15 on Sunday to be taken by car to St. Andrews. The Brainarama is over at 5pm and children will be dropped home at 5.50 approximately. In March, Sunday School classes will be on the 6 th and 13 th and there will be no Sunday School on March 20 th Palm Sunday (All-Age Worship), and March 27 th is Easter Sunday. H.
