The Rector s Letter May the joy of the Risen Lord Jesus be with you and all you love this Eastertide and beyond. We have entered that joyous season of Easter when our Lord Jesus, following the horror of the crucifixion and his death, triumphantly overcame the hatred and narrowmindedness of those who condemned him by being raised to life, even life everlasting. Easter is a time when Christians focus on new life, new birth and the hope of new beginnings. It is with the joy of the Easter story as a back-drop that I wish to write to you about three very exciting projects which are on the horizons of our Parish Family. The three projects are the Parish Centre, the Youth and Children s Pastor and the Crosslinks Holiday Club. All three speak of a new way of being community and reflect the newness that comes when we believe in resurrection, when we believe in a God who transforms the old and makes all things new. God speaks to his world by means of our hopes and also through our lives of practical outreach into the community and the world. All three reflect the challenge and encouragement of God as we journey together as a Parish Family in this place. Since going to press with the March edition of this magazine we received confirmation, through our architect Mr Michael Mohan, that An Bord Pleanala had rejected the appeal against our original planning permission granted by Dublin City Council those few months ago. In tandem with that decision we were delighted to receive Planning permission, with no appeals being made on time, for the Parish Hall and Sextonry site.

This opens the way for the development of our longawaited Parish Centre between the Rectory and Church. The sale of the other site will finance the building and complete transformation of the Parish Centre site at the Church. How much more appropriate could the timing have been than to have received it shortly before Easter, that season of new life and resurrection. It will herald for our Parish Family a new beginning. It is likely that building will commence in or around October of this year and will be completed twelve months later. The result will be a development we can all be rightfully proud of as we look to the future and the overall growth of our Parish Family. What God has started among us will continue and come to fruition within our lifetimes. What we start will be completed by God and will be a testament to his love and care towards us his people. In last month s magazine I mentioned briefly a Holiday Club. This will take place from July 25 th to 29 th in Greenlanes, by kind permission. It is being organised and run by Crosslinks. They are a dynamic mission agency rooted in biblical truth, enabling the work of the Gospel throughout the Anglican church in Europe, Africa and other countries around the world. Their work in Ireland has a number of aspects but particularly in the area of youth work. They run a number of Holiday Camps throughout the island. They are running one such Camp in these United Dioceses, that is, the one in Greenlanes. It is being run in partnership with Clontarf Parish and it would be hoped that this would be the start of an annual event. It is for children between the ages of 4 and 12. It runs from Monday to Friday from 10 to 1. There is a nominal charge of 15 euro per child and the Parish is invited to give a donation towards the work of

Crosslinks. The Parish is asked to house the ten leaders who are 16+ years old and most are 18+. There will be ten people needing accommodation. Please contact me if you would be wiling to take one of the leaders for the week. Four are already housed. Six more households are needed to take a young person from Sunday 24 th to Saturday 30 th July. They will need a bedroom and access to a shower. The family would be asked to feed them breakfast and dinner and give them a packed lunch. Three helpers over the age of 18 are asked to help on the Camp. These would need to undergo training in Belfast. Others under 18 could help out during the week but need not take part in the training. This is a huge opportunity for our Parish and lead very nicely into a ministry of a Youth and Children s Pastor. If we have found the right person by that date it would be hoped that the YCP could take part in the week at Greenlanes. These Holiday Camps are professionally run and very enjoyable ways for children to interact with each other and with God. It is a great opportunity for evangelism within the community and all would be welcome from all religious backgrounds and none. The Youth and Children s Pastor Project continues apace and it is our earnest prayer that the right person will be sent to us by God. The process cannot be rushed, though it would be nice to have the person in place by September Please keep this in your prayers. Holy Week this year again was shared with the Presbyterian and Methodist congregations of Clontarf. Attendances were encouraging and those who attended felt they were both challenged and encouraged. Thanks are due to Revd Conrad Hicks from Clontarf Methodist Church and Mr Alan Finlay from Clontarf Presbyterian Church. We pray that the right person will soon be sent by God to Clontarf Presbyterian Church as they seek a new minister. I along with Breda, Rebekah, David and Luke, wish each and every one of you a blessed and joyful Easter. Yours in the Service of Jesus, Derek

PLANT SALE Saturday, 7 th May 10am-1pm Please contact Hugh Cassidy ( ) if you can help on Friday 6 th or Saturday 7 th Music Ministry In March the band performed two songs very well. Next Music Ministry takes place on Saturday, 2 nd April at 5pm. If you haven t been along yet, why not come along and enjoy the freedom of the worship. All ages are welcome. Why not bring a friend. Reflection Go into all the world and preach the Gospel, kept recurring in this Christian s mind. He became convicted that he hadn t witnessed in his own neighbourhood, let alone further afield. He took action. Armed with a supply of inexpensive bibles, he went from door to door determined to sell them at cost price, as free gifts were seldom valued.

He undertook a daunting task. A few early successes spurred him on. The rejections far outweighed the acceptances. Why your refusal? he carefully asked each one. The same said they would go along with the bible if only the ubiquitous they would leave out that irrelevant Old Testament, a mere Jewish history. Others liked the historic aspect, but felt that other aspects were strictly for the birds. And so it went, with the miracles in the New Testament including even the Virgin Birth and Christ s Resurrection, dismissed as sanctimonious fairy tales. All the objection material having been deleted, the vendor was left with the covers. They didn t survive. A book so uniquely precious should be leather-bound and gilt-edged like my collection of Shakespeare s works. Anyway, black was a disastrous colour to choose, with its connotations. Our ardent evangelist was bloodied, but undaunted. The lesson was learnt? A la carte treatment of the Word of God led to demise. All or nothing at all was a very popular song several years ago, and that s how it is with the Bible. A Maharry. THE LEPROSY MISSION Please save all your stamps. A box can be found at the back of the church for depositing these. The money collected from these goes to fight leprosy throughout the world. Thank you for your continuing support of this project. Greenlanes National School The school broke up on Wednesday 23 rd March for their Easter holidays. The school Chess Club has been playing in competitions over the last month or so. They have done extremely well. The team is made up of Shane McCullagh, Christopher Johnson, Kathryn Ledden, Mark McLoone and Zak Griffith as substitute.

The school has employed a sports coach for athletics for next term. The training will culminate in the Sports Day at the end of term. This year s school outing for Junior and Senior Infants will be at ENRG at Ballycoolin, and this takes place in May. Some of the children have already been there with an outing organised by the Junior Choir. First to sixth classes are going to the Neptune Adventure Centre at Clogher Head in Drogheda. On Wednesday, 16 th February, the funeral of Vera Morrow took place in the Parish Church. Many parishioners and Clontarfites fondly remember Vera for her love and care towards all the children whom she taught in her many years at our Parish National School. She is sadly missed by her neighbours, many friends and numerous pupils. D. Sargent. The McIlwaine team did well, but unfortunately, did not gain enough points to win their Section. The winners were Crumlin and we wish them well in their matches against the winners of the other Sections. The Hope Cup team also did well to get to the semi-finals, when they were beaten by Castleknock, who we congratulate and wish them well in the final match against Finglas. We are now concentrating on Club matches and hope to get them finished before the A.G.M. This will be held on Tuesday, 10 th May and we hope there will a full attendance of members at this very important meeting. H. Erskine
