Vestry Meeting: Monday, February 26, 6:30 pm Dear Friends, A NOTE FROM OUR RECTOR It's the season after the Epiphany, and the idea that I've always heard embraced by the church in years past is that this is a time when we celebrate the shining forth of Christ into the world. In these cold days leading up to Lent, we celebrate God's presence being made known throughout all creation. So, where are you finding God these days? Where is the light of Christ shining into your life? Despite the fact that we celebrate the light of Christ shining forth, I'm willing to bet that, for many of us, those are not always easy questions to answer. It can be hard to discern exactly how Jesus is present right this minute. Yet, we believe that he is.
4 So how do we bridge that gap? One way that I find helpful, particularly when God's absence seems a bit easier to discern than his presence, is a practice of prayer that was developed by the Jesuits over the past few centuries. The practice is called the examen (pronounced "examine") or the examination of conscience. I'll get to the practice of the prayer in a minute. But the idea behind the prayer is an acknowledgement of what I've been talking about. In the rough and tumble of the moment in traffic and arguments with coworkers, in laundry and errands it can sometimes be hard to discern how exactly God is being made known to you. Instead, it is often easier to understand where God was than where God is. To put it another way, we can often see God best in the rearview. So, how does this work in the examen? There are a number of versions, but here is a very simple way to try it: First, you must make some time, 20 minutes or so, usually late in the day. Second, you give thanks for God's presence, trusting that God is with you. Third, you review your day, almost like watching a movie of the way your day unfolded. You try to notice everything, the highs and the lows. Fourth, you give thanks for all the goodness that was there, all the ways God's grace and presence were made known this part is likely to surprise you! I am so often amazed at how God was present, how grace was made known to me when I didn't even notice in the moment. Finally, you confess those times you failed to live in God's love and resolve to do better in the future. To wrap up, you might pray an Our Father or some other simple, memorized prayer. That's it. It's a simple way of prayer, but it will give you that insight about where God was in your life. And here's the amazing thing as I have committed myself
5 to the practice of finding God in the rearview, patterns of his love emerge to me in the present. Through looking to the past and knowing God was there, I find myself more able to find him here and now, shining forth always and everywhere. God bless, Fr. Quinn+ PARISH NEWS CREATE Requests Donations In February and March CREATE will collect the following for the Hosanna Community: canned goods (soup, fruit, tuna, salmon, chicken), macaroni & cheese meals, mayonnaise, mustard, relish, foil, plastic wrap, gallon Ziploc bags, quart Ziploc bags, vegetable oil, cooking spray, and napkins. 7 The Altar Guild Seeks New Members The Altar Guild s mission is to create the sacred environment for all who worship at St. Peter s Church. The Altar Guild offers an opportunity to deepen your worship experience by learning about the holy vessels, vestments, and linens used for our Holy Eucharist. There will be many ways to serve! Teams will be created for each Saturday and each service. The Saturday team will decide what time they would like to start each week or perhaps decide they would rather serve on Friday instead. The Sunday teams will decide who serves after each service for each Sunday. The commitment to serve on a team is for one year. We welcome individuals, men and women, to serve, as well as families. Families with children (ages 10 years and up) may enjoy learning more about the elements of worship to enhance their family experience. All new members will receive detailed training and support. A training manual has been created with definitions, pictures, and a written outline of all the details. If you would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact Beth Janney at Please join us in this sacred ministry! Beth Janney and Susan Harris St. Peter s School Wonder Night Please call for more information about this fun event at the school on Thursday, February 8. All parishioners are invited! 8 The Spiritual Explorers The Spiritual Explorers continue to meet at 10:00 am each Sunday in the Connor Library. This group is currently reading and discussing the New Testament in the chronological order in which most scholars agree the books were written. Discernment has relied on the academic rigor of Yale's Dr. Martin, Professor of Religious Studies; Harvard Divinity School's Dr. Nasrallah; and other respected scholars of Early Christianity and the New Testament. It is a lively discussion of the foundational documents. Anyone interested in the Bible is encouraged to attend. The Healing Altar The Healing Altar is a place where anyone can come to pray for their own healing or for the healing of others. It is in the Tucker Chapel in the Atrium. Specially trained volunteers are available to pray with you after the 9:00 am and 11:00 am services each Sunday. All prayers are kept strictly confidential.
