1 Position Descriptions Associate Rector Saint Alban s, Davidson and Campus Minister, Episcopal Davidson College INTRODUCTION The following position descriptions offer expectations for persons seeking a joint, mutually funded, full-time equivalent ministry uniting the two callings to serve as associate rector for St. Alban s and as the Episcopal campus minister at Davidson College. These joint ministries will be underwritten financially out of the support of the parish of St. Alban s and the Diocese of North Carolina. Each supporting entity provides equal shares toward salary and benefits. The person called to these positions will report to the rector and vestry of St. Alban s for parish associate duties, and will report to the Bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina as the campus minister. She or he will be a part of the campus ministry team at Davidson under the aegis of the College Chaplain, the Rev. Dr. Robert Spach. IMPORTANT St. Alban s is currently engaged in the search for their new rector. The call process is progressing according to plan, and it seems reasonable to expect that the new rector will be named by the summer of However, because the campus minister needs to be in place by July, specifically so that the individual called to this ministry will be situated and ready to greet the incoming freshman class at Davidson, the new rector for the parish will not have occasion to participate in this call process for associate/campus minister. The parish vestry and the diocese have agreed, therefore, that the joint positions will be for, initially, one year only. This will enable the new rector time to settle into the call, and will provide breathing space for acclimatization. At the end of the one year, the incumbent associate and campus minister will be invited to renew his/her application for the anticipated now-open ended relationships. Finally, all parties should be reminded that the half-time commitments to each ministry will require the goodwill to appreciate that the ebbs and flow of the separate calls will differ. Sometimes the burdens of the campus ministry will pre-empt, or co-opt the time available for associate rector duties. Early in each semester would be an example. On the other hand, the parish will rightly expect all hands on deck for the high holy days of the church, and other important periods. The ultimate objective will be the finding of a healthy balance between the needs of each call.

2 Associate Rector Saint Alban s, Davidson Part-time, Shared with Campus Ministry at Davidson College Position Description Provide and share in the pastoral care and counseling needs of the parish. -Keep posted and regular office hours for drop-in parishioner care. -Oversee pastoral visitations and share with the rector in the care and counsel of parishioners. Participate in Leadership of Parish. -Attend and bring voice to staff meetings. -Attend and bring voice to vestry and other parish councils as agreed with or directed by rector. -Help in creating and implementing various new policies and procedures. -Represent clergy leadership on occasions of rector s absence. -Represent St. Alban s at diocesan conventions and councils. -Assist in planning and implementation of various church events and fundraisers, including Oktoberfest and the Ministry Fair within the context of the Holy Eucharist. -Give voice and counsel to the rector. Provide Worship Leadership. -Be present at all worship services, except as agreed with rector. -Contribute to preaching and celebrations as agreed with rector. -Provide counsel for and celebrate baptisms, marriages, funerals as agreed with rector. -Take appropriate share, lead and celebrate at worship services for special or outside groups as agreed with rector. (These would include but not be limited to celebration of the Eucharist at The Pines, taking chapel services for the Pre- School, and for La Escuelita San Alban.) 2

3 Provide Leadership to Children, Youth and Young Adult Ministries. -Oversee confirmation classes and formation for the various age groups within the parish. -Develop and oversee programs for CY and YA Ministries. -Develop and plan, with others, youth events and trips. Participate in diocesan activities and councils as necessary. -Attend Fresh Start, if necessary. -Obtain and keep current all licensing expectations: Sexual misconduct training. Racial awareness training. Others as required. 3

4 Episcopal Campus Minister at Davidson College Position Description (A half-time position paired with the responsibilities of being Associate Rector of St. Alban s, Davidson NC) Background The Episcopal Campus Minister serves as a member of the multifaith campus ministry team under the aegis of the College Chaplain, the Rev. Dr. Robert Spach. Religious / worldview demographics of the 2000 mem. student body. Roman Catholic 17.7 % Diocesan campus minister (full-time). Presbyterian 8.9 % PCUSA and PCA campus mins (FT). Episcopalian/Lutheran 7.7 % Diocesan campus minister (1/2 time). Jewish 5.1 % Campus Rabbi (1/5 time). Methodist 5.1 % UMethodist campus minister (1/4 time). No religious trad % Other Chrstn/non-denom 22.7% (Campus Outreach, FCA, InterVarsity, Young Life). Other religious trad. 4.1 % Buddhist Chaplain (1/4 time). No info reported 4.1 % Tradition-specific activities of the Episcopal Campus Minister. -Greeting new students during Orientation and connecting them with Canterbury. -Leading Morning Prayer on campus (daily, Monday Thursday). -Celebrating Sunday afternoon Holy Eucharist on campus (weekly when school is in session) -Organizing the A Moveable Feast fellowship meal after Sunday Eucharist (weekly). This is hosted by Episcopal Campus Ministry with generous assistance from St. Alban s, but open to the entire student body. No religious affiliation or affinity is required. -Advising the Canterbury Episcopal Fellowship student leadership team (E. Board). 4

5 -Planning and leading retreats for students (once per semester). -Providing pastoral care and counseling for individual students (weekly). -Advising students who are discerning a call to the priesthood (occasionally). -Plan and help lead the Canterbury trip to Costa Rica (every other year). -Represent Episcopal ministry at monthly meeting of multi-faith campus ministers. - Participate in Diocesan Campus and Young Adult Missioner meetings (2 times per year in person; 2 times virtual). -Participate in Charter Committee on Campus and Young Adult Ministry (2-3 time per year). -Participate in Diocesan staff in service training (1-2 times per year). -Participate in required gatherings of diocesan clergy fall conference, fall convention, spring Lenten quiet day. Ecumenical activities of the Episcopal Campus Minister -Preparing for and co-leading the Bread for the Journey Bible Study (weekly; co-sponsored by the Chaplains Office and the Catholic, Episcopal, Methodist & Presbyterian campus ministries). -Co-facilitating the Theology on Tap discussion group (monthly; cosponsored with Catholic & Presbyterian campus ministers). -Co-lead ecumenical worship services (Healing & Wholeness in November; Tenebrae during Holy Week; co-sponsored by all Christian campus ministers). -Help plan and lead a spring break Pilgrimage of Taizé, France for 15 students; includes convening three team meetings before the trip and one meeting after it (every other year: co-sponsored with the College Chaplain and Catholic Campus Minister). -Represent Episcopal ministry on the college s Religious Life Council (monthly). 5
