The Open Offering is for Episcopal Mission Work. Last week s Open Offering collected $275 for the Rector s Discretionary Fund. LOOKING AHEAD November 12: St. Peter s will celebrate Fast Day with a simple meal in the Bracewell Room. Donations will be accepted for the Chattanooga Community Kitchen. Also, Fr. Quinn will present Preparing for Advent at 10:00 am and the St. Peter s School Chorus will perform at the 11:00 am service.

3 November 13: The Caregivers Support Group will meet in St. Peter s Library at 10:30 am. Members will travel to Greenway Farm for a Holy Hike and Eucharist at the Greenway with Fr. Quinn. November 16: St. Peter s School s Turkey Train begins at 8:30 am. All are welcome. November 16: Monthly Primetimers Lunch begins at 11:30 am in the Bracewell Room. All are welcome. November 19: The Annual Parish Meeting will be held at 10:00 am in the Nave. All church members are encouraged to attend. November 22-24: The Church Office will be closed for Thanksgiving. November 27: Vestry Meeting at 6:30 pm in the Bracewell Room. December 3: First Sunday of Advent and Deacon John Rouser s first Sunday at St. Peter s.

4 A NOTE FROM OUR RECTOR Dear Friends, Many of you know that my daughter had minor surgery on Wednesday morning. It's our second time seeing a child wheeled out of the room with Rachelle and me standing there, helpless. It's not a fun situation for anybody. In the pre-op area, Mary Karis became very upset. Not yelling or screaming. Just a sad face with giant tears flowing out of the corners of her eyes. What do you do, what do you say? I had nothing. I'm not sure if I've ever been so thankful that prayer is a regular practice for my family. This fall, every day, I have been teaching the kids to pray one of the prayer book's canticles: Canticle 9, from the book of Isaiah (You can find it on page 86 in the Book of Common Prayer.) Surely, it is God who saves me; * I will trust in him and not be afraid. For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, * and he will be my Savior. Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing * from the springs of salvation. And on that day you shall say, * Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name;

5 Make his deeds known among the peoples; * see that they remember that his Name is exalted. Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, * and this is known in all the world. Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy, * for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel. So, as we sat there in that pre-op room, tears streaming down our cheeks, the beeps and buzzes of the hospital all around, that was all I really had. I began to say the canticle. And the drugged up four-year-old joined in. "Surely, it is God who saves me," she began through tears, "I will trust in him and not be afraid." I won't soon forget that. In a tough, confusing situation she had extra resources of prayer because of our daily routine. Words that might not have been there, an openness to God's healing presence, made their way into that noisy hospital room. Prayer is not something our children, or we, can do without practice. It is something that takes time, dedication, and consistency. But it's worth it. When the waters close in, when the words don't come easily, and when hope seems fading prayer is like a lifeboat of God's love that can keep us afloat. There's no reason everyone needs to have the same kind of prayer life. We're all programmed a little differently, so it wouldn t make sense to try to make all of our practices of prayer identical. But we do all need a prayer life. We need a daily, regular practice of reaching out to God and of hearing God's voice in the midst of life's joys and trials.

Quinn+ PARISH NEWS Fast Day 2017 Fast Day is coming to St. Peter s this Sunday, November 12. It s an opportunity to join with many houses of worship in support of the Chattanooga Community Kitchen. By sitting down and eating a bowl of soup and bread on Fast Day, and then donating the money you would have spent to eat out, you will aid the Chattanooga Community Kitchen in its primary fundraiser. Please support this invaluable work in our hometown. Turkey Train Donations Due Monday Every year, in time for Thanksgiving, St Peter's School collects canned goods and frozen turkeys of 10 lbs. or less for the Food Bank and the children pass each item down the halls into the truck. This is the Turkey Train" and it will be held on Thursday, November 16, at 8:30 am. Last year St. Peter's Church partnered with the school in its collection and we would like to do so again this year. Place your canned good donations in the shopping cart outside the Bracewell Room. Frozen

7 turkeys can go into the freezer in the kitchen or see the Parish Administrator for help. All donations are due by this Monday, November 13. Primetimers Lunch This Thursday The monthly Primetimers Lunch begins at 11:30 am in the Bracewell Room this Thursday, November 16. Mellissa McGibbens of the Maclellan Family Shelter will be the guest speaker. The proceeds from St. Peter s Christmas project this year (sponsored by CREATE) will support the Maclellan Family Shelter. All are welcome. St. Peter's Youth News to Remember ChattEY is Sunday, November 12, 5:00 to 7:15 pm, at Althaus Park (809 James Blvd, Signal Mountain, TN 37377). In case of inclement weather it will be moved to St. Timothy's Signal Mountain. There will be a kickball tournament/cookout. Our current Bishop and the Bishop-elect will attend. Also, T-shirts will be on sale for $15. In January, youth group will move to Sunday nights, 6:30 to 8:00 pm.

8 If you would like to provide dinner for the youth group, please or call Kelsey Wofford at or Special Events for Adults on Sundays at 10:00 am On Sunday, November 12, and Sunday, November 26, Fr. Quinn will offer Rector s Forums on Preparing for Advent. These will be especially helpful to young families, but all adults of the parish are invited to attend one or both at 10:00 am in the Bracewell Room. On Sunday, November 19, the annual Parish Meeting will be held on at 10:00 am in the Nave. Sunday school for adults will not meet on this day. All church members are encouraged to attend this important meeting. Prayer Book Request Parishioner Dorothy Griggs has requested the donation of 10 gently used copies of the Book of Common Prayer so that the Episcopalians who live at the Alexian Brothers facility on Signal Mountain can share Morning Prayer during the week when a priest is not available for Eucharist. If you have a prayer book at home that you are not using, please drop it by the church office during the week or give it to a member of the staff on Sunday. Thank you! Our New Deacon St. Peter s is excited to welcome Deacon John Rouser to our parish beginning on the first Sunday of Advent, December 3. He is currently assigned at St. Francis in Ooltewah. Deacon John has served there since his ordination. He works in the area of elder care, assisting families as they work toward positive solutions for the care of older adults. He has a joyful outlook, a wide range of experience in the

9 church, and a servant's heart. Deacon John will join us on Sundays but also looks forward to being part of our community week in and week out. Please make him feel welcome! Pledge Cards Needed If you have not submitted your pledge for 2018, please drop your card in the mail, bring it to the church office during the week, or place it in the offering plate as soon as possible. The Treasurer and Finance Committee are in the process of preparing the budget for 2018 and need to know what funds will be available for the ministries and upkeep of the church. 11 Special Events on December 3, 2017 The Seating of the Bishop St. John s Cathedral 10: 30 am, Sunday, December 3 The seating of our 5th bishop will take place at St. John s Cathedral, 413 W. Cumberland Ave., Knoxville. In the Episcopal tradition, the new bishop must knock on the red front doors of the cathedral and ask to enter. The cathedral s senior warden will open the door welcoming the bishop with these words, Bishop in the Church of God, and our Bishop, we welcome you to your cathedral Church, the symbol and center of your pastoral, liturgical, and teaching ministry in the diocese. Once entry is granted, and the bishop responds to the welcome, the bishop is formally seated in the cathedra, the chair which is the symbol of the bishop s role as chief shepherd of the diocese. You are invited to join this beautiful and symbolic service at the beginning of our ministry together. Our new bishop will be preaching. Presiding Bishop Michael Curry at Good Samaritan, Knoxville 10 am, Sunday, December 3 The Church of the Good Samaritan in Knoxville is excited to announce that Presiding Bishop Michael Curry will be joining them to preach and celebrate on December 3. The church is located at 425 North Cedar Bluff Road, Knoxville. An outstanding, captivating, and exciting preacher, Curry will join Good Samaritan to kick off the new Church Year with the Advent of the Christ Child. You are welcome to celebrate the first Sunday of Advent with the presiding bishop and Good Samaritan. A reception will follow the service.
