March 2017 St. Peter s Episcopal School News Love of Learning Kindergarten and first grade students performed Rumpus in the Rainforest, a musical about the Amazon rainforest. Students enjoyed dressing as rainforest creatures and sharing the story of a frog with an impossible dream that came true. Joy of Service In collaboration with St. Peter s Church, students will participate in Heifer International s Read to Feed program to raise funds for Flocks of Hope. A Lively Faith The fun won t stop when the school year ends! St. Peter s School will host eight weeks of summer excitement. Camp Discovery is open to the public as well as our current students, ages 3 through fifth grade. Each themed week will incorporate activities for children to act, cook, dance, build, and create. The group has continued to meet on a monthly basis for the last 10 years. Group regulars are parishioners and family members dealing with the joys and struggles of being caregivers for spouses, siblings, adult children, grandchildren, and parents. Attendees meet in the Connor Library on the second Thursday of each month, 1:30 to 3:00 pm. Facilitators are Ann Lindsey, retired Executive Director of the SE TN Alzheimer s Association, and the Rev. Dr. Valerie Carnes, priest associate at St. Peter s. All parishioners, family, and friends are welcome to attend. For more information, please call Joani Koch at or the Rev. Valerie Carnes at Hide n Seek on Mondays During Lent, we have a cure for the dreaded Monday blues. Beginning on Monday, March 6, coffee/tea, juice, and pastries will be waiting in the Adult Forum classroom (downstairs outside the Bracewell Room) by 7:45 a.m. At 8:00 a.m. we ll begin a study of the Old Testament, Psalms, and New Testament lessons read in our service each week, ending at 8:45 a.m. No preparation required come as you are and enjoy some peace and quiet, a simple snack, and casual conversation to begin your week. Invite a friend! Can you guess what s hatching for Lent? You guessed it! Chicks! This year during Lent we will collect once again for Heifer International. Our 2017 project is called Flocks of Hope, and your $20 can buy a flock of chicks, ducks, or goslings. A Flock of Hope donation is a gift that can lift a family from hunger and poverty and ensure a better future. Watch for a special presentation on Sunday, March 5, during the fellowship times following the 9:00 a.m. and the 11:00 a.m. services. There will be an extra surprise for the children at the breakfast fellowship. See you then!

Bonner and alternate delegate Rena Stansbury, headed to Knoxville to conduct the business of the Diocese of East Tennessee, listen to inspiring speakers, learn more about ministry throughout the diocese, and share our story with others. We voted to allow the exploration of entering into a formal companion relationship with the Missionary Diocese of Kondoa, Tanzania, East Africa. We elected lay and clergy delegates to General Convention in Houston, Texas, this July, as well as members to serve on our own diocesan boards. This same body will meet to elect our new Bishop in July in Knoxville and you ll hear more about that soon. See any of the delegates for more information. Thorne Sparkman School of Religion St. Peters will not schedule its own Lenten program this year. Instead, Fr. Bonner invites you to attend the Thorne Sparkman School of Religion held at St. Paul s Episcopal Church (305 West 7 th Street) during Lent. Established through the leadership of Fr. Bonner s own father a former rector of St. Paul s and now in its 44 th year, the Thorne Congratulations to our newest members, received February 12 into the Episcopal Church and the congregation of St. Peter's: Elaine Adams, Evan & Hannah Maounis, Mark Colbert, and Tammy Garland. We extend to them our warmest welcome! Page 4 Sparkman School will be held each Wednesday, March 8 through April 5, and offers the best in Christian education in crucial areas including worship, ethics, liturgy, history, literature, music, and critical thinking. 5 A Note from the Interim Rector On February 12, St. Peter s Youth had the privilege of hosting all of Chattanooga s Episcopal Youth at the monthly ChattEY event. The theme was Mardi Gras so the evening was filled with beads, jambalaya, king cake, and jazz. We began with a meal and then proceeded to various parts of the campus for large field games, arts and crafts, and fellowship time. We ended with Compline led by Bishop George Young and music led by St. Peter s own Cannon Hunt. The turnout for the evening exceeded our wildest expectations with a total headcount of 110 with nearly 80 youth representing 10 parishes throughout the Chattanooga area. A huge thank you to all who made ChattEY such a huge success! Come join us next time at St. Francis on March 12! Page 8 Dear Parish Family: What is Lent? Early Christians observed a season of penitence and fasting in preparation for the Paschal feast, or Easter. The season now known as Lent (from an Old English word meaning spring, the time of lengthening days) has a long history. Originally, in places where Pascha was celebrated on a Sunday, the Paschal feast followed a fast of up to two days. In the third century this fast was lengthened to six days. Eventually this fast became attached to, or overlapped, another fast of 40 days, in imitation of Christ s fasting in the wilderness. The 40-day fast was especially important for converts to the faith preparing for baptism, and for those guilty of notorious sins who were being restored to the Christian assembly. In the western church the 40 days of Lent extend from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday, omitting Sundays. The last three days of Lent are the sacred Triduum of Maunday Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Today Lent has reacquired its significance as the final preparation of adult candidates for baptism. Joining with them, all Christians are invited to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self denial; and by reading and meditating on God s holy Word (BCP, p. 265). A friend refers to Lent as Spring Training for our faith as we get in shape for our spiritual journey through and after Easter. It is to be a powerful time in your year. I read more and eat less. I am intentional about this important time. This year I will focus on a new book by Richard Hays (former Dean of Duke Divinity School) entitled Echoes of Scripture in the Gospels. Hays spreads out in full the argument that the four evangelists use Israel s Scriptures in remarkably different yet remarkably convergent ways. The heart of the book is thus a creative, fresh, and vivid reading of each of the gospels, drawing out multiple, and in many cases previously unimagined, resonances from Scripture and showing how each evangelist deploys these for particular purposes. I am excited about starting this journey through Lent. What will yours be? Dig deeply and hear God s direction as you commit yourself to a 6-week pilgrimage of joy and expectation. I hope you will join me and others in attending The Thorne Sparkman School of Religion at St. Paul s downtown during Lent. It is a highlight of our Lenten journey and it is a Parish thing. I will be the Celebrant at the Eucharist on March 15, and on March 29 St. Peter s volunteers will serve at the dinner held before class each Wednesday at 5:45 pm. Thanks to Charlie Willett for being our representative on the Sparkman Committee. It is a great program and they have material for everyone, Youth and Children included.
