We are living in the days after Christmas/Epiphany and before Easter. That would be Lent, but admittedly, there is more going on in our parish than the observance of Lent. We are grieving. We grieve over loss as was recently evident when celebrating the pass-over of Carolyn Harris, John Madgett and Sandy Noone. We grieve over our sin because it cost Jesus His life. To grieve is to experience deep pain and feel trapped between who we once were and the future. Today, we are not the church that met in the Chicken Coop or for that matter that erected the current sanctuary or with an annual attendance of 14,745 or 20 baptisms and 29 confirmations in one year. Instead, we are a small church, albeit with a good memory. I hear a lot of I remember when because events and current experiences are triggering memories in very specific ways. Reading Don Forsythe s forward in The First Fifty Years (of St Matthew s Episcopal Church), brings deep happiness because his words help us relive wonderful experiences. Also, memories bring uncertainty about the future and we feel trapped between the past and the future. But there is a way out of this maze if only we could reclaim our power by addressing the question: Who am I now? We might start by fully owning the hurt of our loss. Along the pathway to healing, we might creatively express our hurt as one way to assess and reevaluate our situation with the goal being redefinition of self. Continued on page 2 1
Continued from page 1 Also, we can draw from others who have traveled this road, especially those Jesus assured with a promise: Now you are sad, but I will see you again, and your hearts will be filled with gladness, the kind of gladness that no one can take away from you (John 16:22 GNT). Finally, Lent is really living in anticipation of Easter and that requires preparation, the kind that the disciples received from our Lord, Jesus Christ. Like them, it is difficult to see the Easter-life when our eyes are clouded by grief and we are afraid to step out from behind locked doors. The only way out is to trust the risen Lord who liberates from fear and doubt, and awakens the dead to new life. Admittedly, like grief, new life is a slow and painful process. It requires patience and hope that weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning (Ps. 30:5 NRSV). In Christ s service, Fr Orin Church Parish Registry A very brief history of the church registry: The Church (Parish) Registry, is a permanent document used to record sacramental and other historical data for the congregation. This reflects the history of churches members All registries conform to the reporting requirements of The General Convention Office of the Episcopal Church and the Parochial Report Form and include available records of baptism, confirmations, transfer of membership from another church, marriage, divorce, births, adoptions, and/or deaths. Anyone who gets into the genealogy of their families understands how importance church registries are when doing research. Incomplete records hurt the recorded history of our church and its people. Did you know St. Matthew's has Church Registries? These are important records, but they need to be kept updated and ours need help. Therefore, the Vestry is planning a time to do just that. Stay tuned for information. Meanwhile you might start collecting your own and your family s records. Not to worry if you can't find them or don't have records. We'll have a plan and suggestions ready to help you. Even if you feel that your personal records are up to date, we'd like to visit with you to make sure the registries are correct. Thanks and blessings to you all Patti McGill and the 2018 Vestry 2
January 8th was Saint Matthew s Epiphany Feast, complements of lots of planning and hard work by Zella Forsythe. Parishioners were lead down to the parish hall by our crownwearing Sunday school children representing kings following the star. Jason Brooks lead the procession with the Gold Star, crafted by Beth Cook. The children carried lanterns to light the way and plates of cookies for one of Zella s lessons. Parishioners enjoyed a delicious feast of spaghetti, salad, and garlic toast, all whipped up by Pat Whitmore. Zella taught us about Epiphany celebrations around the world. To celebrate like the English, Zella arranged with her neighbor to make three-crown cakes - one strawberry cake, one white cake, and one chocolate cake - with each cake hiding either a baby Jesus, a bean, or a coin. Bobbie Hirsch (Zella s grandson) found the baby Jesus and will be blessed all year. Diamond McCort found the coin and will be lucky in finances all year. Walter Jewell found the bean in his slice and became the King of St. Matthews for the day. Madison Arroyo helped Zella teach how Latin countries celebrate by setting her shoe, filled with hay for the camels, outside the door, where it was consumed overnight by the camels and replaced with candies. Zella then taught the custom in Finland where they bake star-shaped cookies. They make a prayerful wish and break the cookie. They believe if the cookie breaks into three pieces, and if they eat it silently, their wish will come true. Zella also taught us about the customs of Italy. Legend was that a woman named La Befana searched for the wisemen on their journey to find Jesus. She never found the wisemen, so she left toys for the children. Each parishioner was given a toy top to remember the three kings bringing gifts to Jesus. What an incredibly fun and educational way to celebrate Epiphany and learn how the rest of the world celebrates! Thank you Zella!! 3

ST. MATTHEW S USHER S SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER Again, this year the Usher s Group used the catering help of Two Men & A Grill to carry on the tradition of Charlie Matson s Pancake Supper. All you can eat pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee were provided at a cost of $5.00 per adult and $3.00 for children. The Ushers served everyone, and then pitched in for an easy cleanup, as the caterers had again provided paper goods for the event, eliminating the need to use the dishwasher. Attendance was well over 100 this year with several guests coming from Blue Ridge Trinity Lutheran and many friends from the Stone Chapel Building. As a new added service, the option to carry-out was also provided, and was taken advantage of by several people. Rick Robert s son-in-law set a new record for the amount of servings eaten, which totaled 7, and equates to 21 pancakes and 14 sausages WOW! Now that s getting your money s worth. This event is not intended to be a fundraiser, which is a good thing, as the Usher s just broke even to pay the bill, and with a couple of donations, include a tip. A big THANK YOU to the Ushers, Sherry Minzey, and everyone who helped sell tickets and invite friends. Thank you ALL for a fun evening and for your support! 6 Dear Parish Family, RAYTOWN SUMMER LUNCH MINISTRY-2018 Again, this year St. Matthew s has the opportunity to participate in The Raytown Summer Lunch Ministry. This program currently involves local congregations working together to share the love of Jesus by feeding hungry children in Raytown during summer vacation. When school ends for the summer, this program steps up and prepares a healthy sack lunch for children who are on the free or reduced lunch program. The Summer Lunch Ministry serves over 600 children a day for 30 days, totaling about 18,000 lunches, delivered to an area where they live. Volunteering to help put lunches together, or deliver the lunches, can be 1 day a week or just 1 day during the month of July. If interested in volunteering you may contact Raytown Christian Church, or let Linda Gerding know and she can turn in your name and number. The Service & Outreach Commission would like to ask St. Matthew s Parish to help with supplies that are greatly needed, which include: 1. Napkins 2. Brown lunch bags 3. Ziplock bags (no store brands, name brands only: Glad, Ziplock, etc.) The deadline for supply delivery is May 1 st. If we begin collecting the above items now, we will have 9 Sundays to fill up the box in the cloakroom marked Summer Lunch Ministry. Thank you for your support. Linda Gerding, Service & Outreach Commission 6
True Self-Denial If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.--Luke 9:23 Lent is a period of 40 days prior to Easter. For many people it commemorates Jesus fasting in the wilderness. They give-up something for Lent every year, like sweets or TV. This can yield spiritual benefits, but denying yourself things and denying yourself aren t the same. In Luke 9:23, Jesus taught the latter. This verse can be broken down into three parts. In the statement, If anyone desires to come after Me, the word desires indicates that this is for sincere disciples only. In the phrase, let him deny himself, the words let and deny himself imply a willingness to renounce one s selfish will and ways. And in the statement, Take up his cross daily, the word daily emphasizes a continual dying to self-will. It s easier to give things than to give ourselves. Yet Jesus gave Himself, so must we. To those who deny themselves in obedient sevice, He has promised, Whoever loses his life for My sake will save it (v.24). And to His question, What profit is it to a man if he gains the world, and is himself destroyed? We are called to answer, There is no profit! We show that we believe this when we deny ourselves and follow Christ. To follow Christ we must let go Off all that we hold dear; And as we do deny ourselves, Our gains become more clear. By living for ourselves we die; by dying to ourselves we live. By Joanie Yoder/ Our Daily Bread Linda Batson Light of Christ Chapter, Daughters of the King, 7
Flying Solo has been keeping St. Matt s members busy the last couple of months. In January, Zella Forsythe, Linda Gerding, Patti McGill, Beth Cook, Darrell Cook, and Judy Taylor enjoyed dinner at Ted s Cafe Escondido, and a movie, The Post, at B&B Theater in Lee s Summit In February, Flying Solo was joined by Morrie Carlson from BRT. Our movie was Samson and dinner was at Jose Peppers in Lee Summit. Morrie, who works for the Royals, brought his 2015 World Series ring - pretty amazing! It s covered in diamonds, and the Royals gave out several hundred rings to full time staff, players, managers and scouts. Ask Morrie at the next event how much the Royals spent on rings you won t believe it! Flying Solo participated the following weekend in Raytown Night With the Mavericks. Zella Forsythe, Morrie Carlson, Beth Cook, Darrell Cook and Linda Gerding were there. It was Zella s and Beth s first ever hockey game. Thanks to Linda for putting this event on our radar. Be sure to mark your calendar for the third Saturday in March for our next Flying Solo outing. Judy Taylor Evangelism chair 8
