3 Dear Friends in Christ, A Note from the Rector I pray that you and all those you love have enjoyed a wonderful Christmas; I pray God blesses you in This new year feels like such an exciting time in the life of St. Peter s to me. So many good things have happened over the past few months, and I m absolutely thrilled about all that we have coming up. Here are just a few highlights as we launch out into a new year: Attention St. Peter s Parish, The Youth Group is preparing to go the Heifer International Ranch in Perryville, Arkansas, next summer: June This Alternative Break Trip focuses on the core components of an introduction to Heifer International, service learning, educational activities, and taking action. There will be a variety of experiential activities such as team-building development, educational sessions, overnight global village experience, and hands-on service projects in the Garden, Maintenance, and Livestock Departments. These are designed to increase our understanding of global hunger and poverty issues that Heifer International encounters in the field. Through this trip, we will grow and develop together, and gain a greater understanding of how Heifer creates lasting change in communities around the world. We still have one slot open for anyone in 6 th through 12 th grades who is interested in attending. The cost is $350 per person, plus transportation, which will be factored in closer to the date of the trip. There will be numerous opportunities for fundraising, the first of which is a Candy Bar Sale that will begin on Sunday, January 7, Youth are asked to please plan to arrive for youth group 15 minutes early on this day to get information about the sale and pick up candy bars. Trip Details WHO: 6 th Grade through 12 th Grade WHAT: Mission Trip to Heifer International Ranch WHEN: Sunday, June 3, through Friday, June 8, 2018 WHERE: Perryville, Arkansas COST: $350 per person, plus transportation Page 10 We know that numbers aren t everything, but increased attendance at church is a good clue about the excitement around St. Peter s. Our Sunday attendance is up about 20 people a week over the last few months, and we have around 40 more people in worship every week than we did this time last year. Not only are more people showing up, more people are committing to this place with their giving. Our pledge drive (which is still open to new pledges!) raised more than 10% more than last year s. And it s not just about amount of money we had nearly 20 new or first-time pledgers this year! That s a lot of new people committing to St. Peter s with their treasure. We have a number of new programs in the works an Epiphany Chili Cook-Off and House Blessing on January 6, a Basic Anglicanism class for those looking to deepen their life as disciples of Jesus in the Episcopal Church launching on January 7, exciting programs in the planning stages this Lent, both children s and youth ministries looking for new ways to partner with our school community. This list could go on and on. Exciting things are happening. Our new Deacon, John Rouser, has already been a blessing to our community. He brings joy and excitement with him on Sundays, and he is going to help us continually consider how we are caring for those most in need. It has been a number of years since St. Peter s has welcomed a seminarian from Sewanee, but we will do just that on Sunday, January 21, when Chris Dell comes to serve for the next year. This is just scratching the surface. You can t quantify the other things going on spiritual growth, renewal, engagement in worship, lives changed by the good news of Jesus. That s what we re really all about. That s what makes the measurable things matter. That s what gets me up in the morning and has me excited about the year to come. What about you? How is God calling you to partner with the Spirit s good work at St. Peter s? Grace and Peace, Fr. Quinn+ Page 3
4 ST. PETER S YOUTH (Pictured: Youth Group, New Acolyte Training, and the Christmas Party) While every day is a new day in the life of the church, the beginning of a New Year is a great time to spark positive change. The St. Peter s Youth Group will be taking steps towards growth and renewal in the next few months and the whole church is invited to pray for the youth. Beginning on January 7, 2018, youth group will be held on Sunday nights from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. On Wednesday afternoons from 3:15 to 5:15 pm, there will be a new afterschool program for the Fifth Grade called Chillin with Church. Additionally, the coming year will hold many youth events on the diocesan level and across the country, from New Beginnings and Happening to the Heifer International Mission Trip in Arkansas. With hopeful spirits and the help of many amazing volunteers, this year will see the youth group grow in faith and community. The prayer of Self-Dedication from the Book of Common Prayer is a wonderful blessing for the coming of a new year: Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to thee, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly thine, utterly dedicated unto thee; and then use us, we pray thee, as thou wilt, and always to thy glory and the welfare of thy people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. (BCP 1979) Page 4 Basic Anglicanism Our new Bishop, Brian Cole, will visit St. Peter's on Sunday, February 25, giving us a chance to meet him as a parish for the first time. It will also give us the opportunity to confirm and receive new members, as well as for current members to reaffirm their baptismal vows in a formal way. Fr. Quinn will offer a class beginning January 7 at 10:00 am that will fulfill the formation requirements for those seeking confirmation, reception, or reaffirmation. However, it will also be a good class for anyone interested in deepening their own understanding of being a Christian in the Anglican tradition at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. If you have questions about the class, please get in touch with Fr. Quinn. Page 9
5 St. Peter s Episcopal School News January 2018 Epiphany Celebration You are invited to attend a new celebration of Epiphany at St. Peter s Church on Saturday, January 6, beginning at 5:00 pm. First we will gather to enjoy a Chili Cook-Off. Vote for your favorite by dropping a dollar in the donation box. All proceeds go to the Youth for their upcoming mission trip. Please let Linda or Lauren know if you would like to compete and make a crock-pot of chili. The winner will receive a trophy they can proudly display in their home until the next Chili Cook-Off. Linda Cooper lindacooper@stpeters.org; Lauren Abbott laurenabbott@stpeters.org. We will then Bless the Chalk and divide into groups based on distance from the church. Each group will go to their own houses that are within 10 minutes of the church and Mark the Door Frames with Chalk as a blessing, reminiscent of the Magi s visit to the Holy Family. To end the evening, we will gather back at the church for Dessert. Don t miss this fun event, sure to become a new tradition at St. Peter s! They will enjoy fun dress-up days, worship together, and rejoice in learning through a poetry jam, literacy day, and a performance from Bright Star Theatre group. We invite you to join us for great activities during Episcopal School Week, January Joy of Service: Founded on the Christian principles of preparing students to be models of God s love and grace, St. Peter s provides service opportunities for all age levels. Students are collecting travel-size toiletries to donate to Metropolitan Ministries, as well as painting rocks with inspiring messages to share with our neighbors in the Chattanooga area. A Lively Faith: Students embrace the New Year by exploring mysteries and wonders found in nature. Harvesting herbs and plants in the garden, they made glycerin soap using rosemary and soup using leeks. Science lessons and activities in the STORM lab make learning fun, engaging, and purposeful.
