2 youth ministry director s message Blessings to you! Thank you for picking up the Outline & Calendar for the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry (OYYAM) for the Archdiocese of Vancouver. This brochure is meant to give you a taste of youth and young adult ministry in the Archdiocese of Vancouver. Whether you are an experienced youth ministry or young adult coordinator, a ministry rookie, a pastor, a parent, a youth, a young adult, a teacher, or casual observer, I am most confident that you ll find something in here just for you! It has been an exciting year for our office. We started off 2010 by moving our office from the second floor to the first floor at 150 Robson, just in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Then, we were heavily involved with the Olympics, responsible for recruiting volunteers for our Olympic Hospitality Centre at the building. Close to 60 young adults were involved in the memorable occasion. In the Spring the archdiocese hired its first-ever Consultant for Young Adult Ministry. And as of September 1, the former Youth Ministry Office became the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry. Thus, this Outline & Calendar comes to you a couple of months later than usual. However, the extra time allowed us to include some young adult ministry content along with the same important information regarding youth ministry. I encourage you to use this brochure as a planning tool and good starting point for information. You ll be able to find more detailed information about all of its contents on our brand new website at Thanks to all of you for who you are and all you do. January 20-23, 2011 For more info, visit Archdiocese of Vancouver Centre (150 Robson) searching in the spirit youth leaderhip teams youthleader Searching in the Spirit provides youth and adults with formation in discipleship, and challenges participants to live out their faith values in everyday, real-life situations. Participants combine practical skills, a faith perspective, and spiritual development to learn and grow in their faith through activities, games, skits, presentations, testimonies and reflection. Most of all, it inspires the newly confirmed to continue on in their faith journey. for newly confirmed youth ages 12 & 13 Summer 2011 Cost and location to be announced Youth and young adults have the opportunity to serve on our archdiocesan leadership teams. Every year we recruit teams to serve at Spirit Day and Searching in the Spirit. These are amazing leadership training opportunities. We recruit three distinct teams for Spirit Day (see page 9 for explanation of event), and each play an integral part of the event. The Stage Team develops and implements the prayers, skits, introductions and testimonies and works with the keynote presenters and musical guest. The Spirit Team welcomes the participants, leads icebreakers, and helps with ushering and crowd control throughout the event. The Logistics Team works behind-the-scenes at Spirit Day in the areas of hospitality, food service, and event set-up and take-down. The Searching in the Spirit Leadership Team is comprised of a dozen youth and young adults and works together with the OYYAM to plan and execute the five-day event (see above for explanation of event). The team is responsible for designing and implementing all aspects of the program, including prayers, icebreakers, testimonies, teachings, arts and crafts, and other activities. Team members receive hands-on training from the OYYAM in the months leading up to the event. The team is formed in February and March, thus this is a sixmonth commitment. The OYYAM will next be offering YouthLeader, our Christian Leadership training event, in the summer of training 4 Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry 5

4 support website retreats Ministry provides general and specific support for priests, youth ministry coordinators, youth ministry leadership teams, and the development of parish youth ministry. As part of this support, OYYAM staff members are able to visit parishes or host meetings at the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry. consultant visits Ministry staff visits parishes and meets with parish youth ministry leadership for the purpose of consultation, evaluation, and strategizing the development of the parish s youth ministry. Staff members are available to: Assist with program evaluation Provide ministry resource options Aid ministry teams to promote comprehensive youth ministry Contact the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry to book a Consultant Visit. coordinators meetings Ministry provides an opportunity for coordinators to learn more about our events and training opportunities, network, address current youth ministry issues, evaluate programming, and promote their events. All meetings are from 7pm 9pm. parish information session The Parish Information Session is the first step in a parish s development of its youth ministry. The session gives the pastor and those who assist him in parish leadership the information necessary for the parish to make decisions regarding developing its own youth ministry. The session lasts 60 to 90 minutes, and covers topics such as the definition of youth ministry, principles of effective parish youth ministry, and using youth ministry to meet the needs of youth. Contact the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry to book a Parish Information Session. in-servicing Ministry provides specialized, parishspecific training for parish youth ministry leadership. Some topics include: Effective Program Planning and Calendaring Conducting Parish Ministry Assessment Surveys Establishing an Internet Presence for Youth Outreach Staff members will visit your parish to conduct an In-Service and are able to develop sessions specific to your parish youth ministry. As well, they are able to expand on topics covered in our Youth Ministry Seminars (page 6). Contact the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry to book an In-Service. Ministry website is constantly updated and is the best place for information on OYYAM training opportunities and events. You can download registration forms, posters, and promotional material. There are many other great features, such as parish events, job opportunities, photos, videos, spotlights, blogs, and our popular Crazy Caption Contest. All the info you need is just a click away! youth ministry sunday The annual Youth Ministry collection for the archdiocese will take place on the December 4 & 5 weekend at all parishes. The purpose of this archdiocesan collection is to assist the work of the OYYAM in providing parish youth ministry formation through training and support. Parishes with active youth ministry programming will receive a rebate from this collection. OYYAM scholarships The OYYAM Scholarship recognizes high school students making a difference in their parishes, schools, communities and homes. Two students will be selected to receive an award of $500 each to be applied to post-secondary schooling. OYYAM news The OYYAM News is our bi-weekly newsletter that goes out to youth ministry coordinators, priests, core team members, youth, young adults, parents, volunteers, and youth ministry advocates throughout our archdiocese, country, and around the world. The OYYAM News serves as a gateway to the website and other resources. Sign up on our website to receive the OYYAM News. Ministry offers three retreats a year for youth ministry coordinators, core team members, and ministry leaders. The Advent and Lenten Retreats are offered in conjunction with the Office of Religious Education. Advent Twilight Retreats: November 26 and 29, 2010 Lenten Twilight Retreats: March 4 and 7, 2011 Summer Retreat: June 4, 2011 resources We welcome you to view and review specific resources before purchasing them for your parish youth ministry. NET ministries NET (National Evangelization Teams) are Catholic Evangelists who share Jesus gospel message with young people in a team format. NET s mission is to challenge young Catholics to love Christ and embrace the life of the Church. NET provides parishes and schools with youth retreats, confirmation retreats, and family retreats. 5 freedom youth day events Friday, March 11, pm 10pm St. Joseph Parish, Langley FREE admission Join us for Freedom: a powerful one-of-a-kind reconciliation event for youth and young adults. Since the inaugural event in 1999, Freedom has grown into one of the OYYAM s biggest and most powerful events, involving 5,500 teens, dozens of priests, and over 100 volunteers. The first part of the evening is a general session including music, skits and dramas, teachings, testimonies, and an examination of conscience. The various activities, as part of the energetic and emotional program, help to prepare youth for confession. Dozens of priests are then on-hand to administer the Sacrament of Reconciliation to participants so they may feel the healing power of Christ. Youth and young adults also have the opportunity to pray with prayer teams and enjoy some fellowship. By the end of the night, participants will realize that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is nothing to be afraid of; rather, it is a vital part of their faith they should celebrate! for youth in grades 8-12 May 6 & 7, 2011 Archbishop Carney Regional Secondary School, Port Coquitlam Cost to be announced Youth Day is an annual event for the youth of the archdiocese to celebrate and grow in their faith through a dynamic weekend of fun, faith and fellowship. Past themes include Radical Commitment, Set Our Hope on the Living God, and Witness the Power. Youth Day brings some of the best local and international youth ministry speakers, and past keynote presenters and musical guests include APeX Ministries, Matt Maher, Mike Patin, Steve Angrisano and our most recent guest, Jesse Manibusan. Youth Day begins Friday evening with icebreakers, praise and worship music, and a talk from our keynote speaker. Saturday activities include general sessions with the keynote speaker, divine time prayer, men s and women s sessions, the teens vs. Men In Black soccer match, Mass with the Archbishop, and a variety of social activities. Youth ministry coordinators and leaders from throughout the archdiocese assist in the organization of the event. Youth Day is an opportunity for many youth and youth ministers to share their gifts and talents in planning this celebration. spirit day for grade 7 students November 6, 2010 November 7, 2010 Chandos Pattison Auditorium, Surrey Cost to be announced Spirit Day has grown tremendously in its six years, seeing close to 8,000 participants and chaperones gather to celebrate their faith over that span. Spirit Day is designed to celebrate the grade seven students of our archdiocese! This event will get participants excited about receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, and awaken the Holy Spirit in young and old alike! Put on by youth ministry coordinators and core team members from our Archdiocese, the day will include sessions, testimonies, games, music, skits, prayer, food, Mass, and much more. Spirit Day is still a one-day event; parish and school groups will have the option of attending either day. Past themes include Believe, Shine Like the Son, and Live out Loud. Spirit Day invites and encourages grade sevens to stay connected to their faith and to God while giving them an experience of the bigger church. Spirit Day originals APeX Ministries will once-again serve as our keynote presenters and musicians Jacob and Matthew will make their Spirit Day debut as our worship leaders! Saturday, October 23, 2010 St. Mary s Parish, Vancouver Congress is the annual faith formation day for all involved in spreading the Gospel in the various parishes and ministries of the Archdiocese of Vancouver. Congress brings together people from various catechetical ministries to learn, share, and celebrate their faith. The theme for Congress is Homecoming: Reaching Out and will focus on how we can reach out and welcome inactive Catholics back to the Church. The keynote speaker is Fr. Robert Barron. Engaging, dynamic and relevant, Fr. Barron is a highly soughtafter Catholic evangelist, prominent theologian, and engaging Catholic voice in popular culture. From the classroom of prestigious universities to the social net on YouTube, Fr. Barron s global ministry Word on Fire has a simple but revolutionary mission: to evangelize the culture. 6 conferences young adult ministry world youth day 2011 World Youth Day, an evangelical initiative of the Church, is an international gathering of Catholic young adults giving pilgrims an opportunity to attend Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI. Ministry will be holding World Youth Day Group Leaders meetings over the next year to help groups prepare for World Youth Day. These sessions will focus on networking, information sharing, logistics, and faith formation.
