4 . A Message from the Pastor On the one hand, salvation is God's doing, and we cannot earn His blessings. Today's first reading, from Isaiah, emphasizes that, through his Son, God does all the saving. On the other hand, we must cooperate with God because He cannot force his bounty upon us. That is why John the Baptist in today s Gospel summons us to play our essential part by leading lives of repentance, conversion and renewal, thus preparing the way for the Lord's second coming. We start this process by preparing for the celebration of Christmas, the Lord s first coming. Advent is the time for us to make this preparation by repenting of our sins and renewing our lives through prayer, penance, and the sharing of our blessings with others. Let us remember the oft-repeated words of Alexander Pope: "What does it profit me if Jesus is reborn in thousands of cribs all over the world and not reborn in my heart? He means that Jesus must be reborn in our heart during this season of Advent and every day of our lives, radiating his love, kindness, mercy, forgiveness and spirit of humble service to the world through our lives. --Father John Just for Laughs A Politically Correct Christmas Greeting? Christmas Collection Information The 2013 Christmas Quota for Sacred Heart is $1, The Quota directly funds the ministry of Catholic Charities. In addition to the good works our parish does, Catholic Charities is able to reach out to and address the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable people living in our local area. Through Catholic Charities we are better able to fulfill the Gospel mandate of Christ: namely that we feed the hungry; clothe the naked, welcome the stranger in our midst. During these difficult economic times when we as individuals and as parish struggle to make ends meet it is nonetheless, the poorest among us who are most exposed to and unprotected from financial distress. In and through our funding the ministry of Catholic Charities through the Christmas Quota, we breathe new life into the words Jesus spoke at the synagogue in Nazareth, bringing good news to the poor and announcing a year of favor from the Lord. If the quota is not collected in the Christmas Collections we will have to take money from the parish s operating fund to fulfill the quota. Thanks for being generous.
