WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Service for the Lord s Day Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 15, 2018 GATHERING (Silence during the Prelude is requested in preparation for worship.) * PRELUDE Processional William Mathias *CALL TO WORSHIP Let us worship God! (Those who are able may stand.) The earth is the Lord s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it; Psalm 24:1-2, 7 for God has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers. Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the God of glory may come in. *PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. O God, light of the hearts that see you, life of the souls that love you, strength of the thoughts that seek you: to turn from you is to fall, to turn to you is to rise. to abide in you is to stand fast forever. Although we are broken and struggle to approach you, or to ask anything at all of you, grant us your grace and blessing for the sake of Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen. (The Cross and Bible lead the procession, symbolic of the centrality in worship of Jesus Christ - the Living Word, and the Bible - the written Word.)

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN 35 LOBE DEN HERREN Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty 2

CALL TO CONFESSION The proof of God s amazing love is this: While we were sinners, Christ died for us. Because we have faith in him, we dare to approach God with confidence. (Romans 5:8; Hebrews 4:16) In faith and penitence let us confess our sin before God and one another. *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. (Silent confession) Kyrie (Sung responsively by the choir and congregation) Hal H. Hopson Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. ASSURANCE OF PARDON *The Peace (The liturgist pours water, which reminds us of our baptism.) Believe the Good News: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Since God in Christ has forgiven us, let us also forgive one another. The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. (Please exchange the peace with the words, The peace of Christ be with you. ) 3

*ACT OF PRAISE (Singing together Hymn 581) *CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SCRIPTURE Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. (Everyone is asked to sign the Friendship Register, which is located on the center aisle end of each pew.) THE WORD Hear the Word of God! Our ears are open. GLORIA PATRI 2 Samuel 6:1-5, 12b-19 (Old Testament, pages in your pew Bible) Psalm 24 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! William Mathias Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up ye everlasting doors, and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O ye gates, even lift them up, ye everlasting doors., and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? Ephesians 1:3-14 (New Testament, page 192 in your pew Bible) SERMON Receive Your Inheritance Heidi Hudnut-Beumler (A moment for meditation) *HYMN 839 Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine! ASSURANCE 4

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH We believe that God calls us to live in freedom: to be God s loving and faithful people, to accept the cost and joy of discipleship, to resist the power of evil around us and within us, to be servants in serving humanity, and to bear witness to God in history like Jesus Christ. We believe that God calls us to live in love: to love with a love that knows no bounds, to love with compassion and forgiveness, to receive each other as children of God, made in God s image, and to live together as heirs of the grace of life. We believe that in responding to God s call we are promised: God s presence in times of trial and joy, courage in the struggle for justice and peace, food for the journey and solace for our souls, and fullness of grace which has no end. Amen. Contemporary sources PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. OFFERING Anthem (8:30 a.m.) THANKSGIVING There s a Wideness in God s Mercy 6 Maurice Bevan There's a wideness in God's mercy Like the wideness of the sea; There's a kindness in God s justice Which is more than liberty. There is no place where earth's sorrows Are more felt than up in heaven; There is no place where earth's failings Have such kindly judgment given. For the love of God is broader Than the measure of one s mind; And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind. But we make his love too narrow By false limits of our own; And we magnify his strictness With a zeal he will not own. There is plentiful redemption In the blood that has been shed; There is joy for all the members In the sorrows of the Head. There is grace enough for thousands Of new worlds as great as this; There is room for fresh creations In that upper home of bliss. If our love were but more simple We should take him at his word; And our lives would be all gladness In the joy of Christ our Lord.

Anthem (11:00 a.m.) Richard Proulx Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound Amazing grace! how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see. Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believed! Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me; His word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be As long as life endures. *DOXOLOGY LASST UNS ERFREUEN Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below: Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! *PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. All we have and all we are comes from you, O God, our Father, our Mother, our Creator, our Redeemer. If we were to give thanks until the end of time, we could not repay your benevolence and grace. Take these offerings of our gifts and our lives, we pray, and increase our generosity, that everything we say and do might show forth your irrepressible, redeeming love. Thank you for filling us with your spiritual blessings that we would be a blessing for others, embodying your intentions for the redemption and reconciliation of the world. In the power of the risen Christ, we pray. Amen. 7

*THE LORD S PRAYER (Singing together) (Please refer to the inside back cover of your hymnal for the words and music for this hymn.) *HYMN 821 SENDING My Life Flows On HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE Toccata on Lobe den Herren Craig Phillips *(Those who are able may stand.) CENTERING PRAYER brings us into the mystery of God in silence, as we clear our minds and hearts and open them to listen and receive. Be still and know that I am God, says the Psalmist. Come and be still, 9:00 9:30 a.m. on Thursday mornings in Room M-209, June through August. We gather in sacred space by candlelight and cross, in the presence of God and one another. The half hour begins with a brief passage of scripture or uplifting word from ancient and contemporary spiritual guides, followed by twenty minutes in silence, and concluding with a version of the Lord s Prayer. HOSPITALIZATIONS: Because of federal health care/confidentiality mandates, area hospitals are not able to release the names of our members who may be patients in their facilities. Please contact the church office ( ) or one of the members of our church staff when you learn of someone in the hospital who may need a pastoral call from the church. PRAYER REQUESTS: It is the privilege of our pastors and the Congregational Care Committee s Prayer Team to pray by name for those who need our care. Please indicate on one of the prayer request forms, found in the pew literature racks, the name of the person and the nature of your request. Place your request form in the offering plate or give it to one of our pastors. SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK: Please note that the Second Harvest Food Bank grocery cart, used to collect food donations, is now a grocery drawer, located at the reception desk at the Mayfair Road entrance. Donations of canned goods, crackers, cereals and other non-perishable food items are needed for those who come to us for assistance. Please bring your heat and eat contributions and drop them off on your next trip to Westminster. 11
