2 JUNE 17, 2018 I ELEVENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME Jesus compares the kingdom of God to a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, but destined to become a leafy tree (cf. Mt 13: 31-32), or to the seed a man scatters on the ground: "he sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows, he knows not how" (Mk 4: 27). The kingdom is grace, God's love for the world, the source of our serenity and trust: "Fear not, little flock", Jesus says, "for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom" (Lk 12: 32). Fears, worries and nightmares fade away, because in the person of Christ the kingdom of God is in our midst (cf. Jesus asks us "to seek" actively "the kingdom of God and his righteousness" and to make this search our primary concern (Mt 6& ;33). For his part, the Apostle Paul states that "the kingdom of God does not mean food and drink but righteousness" (Rom 14: 17) above all, and urges the faithul to put their members at the service of righteousness for sanctification (cf. Rom 6: 13, 19). The human person is thus called to work with his hands, mind and heart for the coming of God's kingdom into the world. This is especially true of those who are called to the apostolate and are, as St Paul says, "fellow workers for the kingdom of God" (Col 4: 11), but it is also true of every human person. The newly founded Catholic Charities of Acadiana will include a select number of chancery offices in addition to the services already offered through Catholic Services of Acadiana. I am looking forward to seeing the entire diocese involved in the charitable works of the Church and I believe now is the time to increase the reach and impact of this work throughout all of our parishes. I have placed the highest level of confidence in the leadership of Executive Director Kim Boudreaux and have entrusted her and her staff with this vital ministry of the Church. The creation of Catholic Charities of Acadiana will not diminish or change existing parish based ministries rather, I have charged CCA in being a strong resource to existing social ministries in providing assistance, training, and convening. Please join me in praying for our diocese during this centennial year, that we can respond to Jesus call to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, visit the sick and imprisoned. Centennial News - Sunday, June 17, 2018 Dedication of St. John the Evangelist - The im pressive Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette is the result of the efforts of Fr. William Teurlings and the dedicated parishioners of St. John over one hundred years ago. The third church on this location, the cornerstone was laid in 1913 and took almost three years to complete. On June 27, 1916 the new church was consecrated by Bishop Laval, auxiliary Bishop of New Orleans. The Cathedral is Dutch Romanesque in style, reflecting the influence and vision of Fr. Teurlings, a native of the Netherlands, who came to southwest Louisiana as a young missionary priest in August 15 get your boat and join the procession - Fete Dieu de Vermilion our Eucharistic Adoration will be on the Vermilion River this year beginning in Abbeville at St. Mary Magdalen with a Mass in French at 8am. The river procession will begin after with a Rosary and Benediction then a Rosary and Benediction at s, then a foot 3:45pm from Beaver Park to Cathedral up University St. to the Cathedral Vespers at 5pm and Mass at 5:30 with Bishop Deshotel. Having 121 Church Parishes in our Diocese we would like to have at least 1 boat from each parish. The novena will begin on Wednesday, July 18 and end on Thursday, July 26, which is the feast day of St. Anne and St. Joachim. On the final day, July 26, members are invited to attend mass at St. John the Evangelist Cathedral in Lafayette at 12:05 in honor of the Centennial year of our diocese.
