2 SEPTEMBER 3, 2018 I THE TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Mary, Mother of Jesus, throw your mantle of purity over our priests. Protect them, guide them, and keep them in your heart. Be a Mother to them, especially in times of discouragement and loneliness. Love them and keep them belonging completely to Jesus. Like Jesus, they, too, are your sons, so keep their hearts pure and virginal. Keep their minds filled with Jesus, and put Jesus always on their lips, so that he is the one they offer to sinner and to all they meet. Mary, Mother of Jesus, be their Mother, loving them and bring them joy. Take special care of sick and dying priests, and the ones most tempted. Remember how they spent their youth and old age, their entire lives serving and giving all to Jesus. Mary, bless them and keep a special place for them in your heart. Give them a piece of your heart, so beautiful and pure and immaculate, so full of love and humility, so that they, too, can grow in the likeness of Christ. Dear Mary, make them humble like you, and holy like Jesus. Amen. 9:00 & 11:00 Babysitting is available in the Cathedral Center Grace Suite for children ages 6 months 3 years. VOLUME 72 NUMBER 35 2
3 A LETTER FROM FR. CHESTER ARCENEAUX My Dear People, Our Lord said in the Gospel of Matthew, Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. We are living through a difficult time as a Church both universally and locally. We are again confronting the sin of the abuse of children within the Church. The pain of the victims is our pain, and the sins of the Church are our sins. As a parish family we must be willing to hold ourselves accountable to the highest degree possible when it comes to protecting the vulnerable among us. In all of this, I want to renew my commitment to you that I want what is best for you and your families. I am serious about protecting you and your children in their activity in the Church of the Cathedral of St. John and Cathedral-Carmel School. We are currently reviewing our parish practices for a Safe Environment for Children and seeking new recommendations in light of recent events. We are considering how to involve the laity of the Church more in holding priests and staff here accountable to the highest safety policies possible for children in addition to the current policies that are in place. I would like to speak with you openly about all of this and answer any questions you may have. I am inviting you to a Parish Forum in the Cathedral Center Sunday, September 9, at 10:00am. We will begin immediately following the 9:00 Mass. Come with your questions and concerns. I am prepared to answer them as best I can. Please continue to pray for the victims of abuse by the hands of some leaders in the Church and for the swift change that is needed to ensure that no one has to suffer these horrible pains again. We will be holding a weekly Holy Hour for healing in the Church for victims and Faithful on Mondays at 7:00pm beginning Monday, September 10. Confessions will be available during this time along with prayer and song before the Blessed Sacrament. Please join us and invite others. If you need anything, please reach out to me or my staff. Humbly Your Shepherd, Fr. Chester
