4 Welcome Honor Empower YES INITIATIVE The journey of the Yes Initiative is a Conscious Awakening to the power the Holy Spirit has given to each of us to actively engage in the Mission of Jesus. For so long we have not been informed nor empowered to reach the potential for which we have all been created by our wonderful God. This Initiative is to stir each of our pots to see and then to Belong to our parish. And in our belonging to move from taking what the church has to offer, to giving of who we are to build the Kingdom of the Father. Our YES is our challenge for all to Step up to the Plate and take our rightful place in becoming a Disciple and inviting others to walk with us. So in the word of the Jedi of Star Wars, may the Force be with Us!! A NEW LANGUAGE FOR A NEW DIRECTION This YES Initiative requires a new language that the Church has given us since Vatican II. First, as a people we are called the Laity, that is those not ordained or in the religious state. By our Baptism all have a part to play by directing every day affairs according to the will of God. The Laity must bring God s enlightenment and order to society. A big undertaking, to say the least, but one that is essential to Discipleship and the building of unity through the Holy Spirit. Pope Pius XII said the Laity are on the front lines and must have a clear consciousness of actually being Church. Notice the emphasis on being Church and not going to Church. This has been the direction of our Catholic Church since Vatican II, just never acted upon. Again, the challenge is to move from simply doing or going to Church to accepting the gift of the Spirit we received at Baptism to become a people creating a sense of belonging, Welcoming those we meet, Honoring their journey and Empowering all to awaken to the gift they are for the Body of Christ. 4

5 St. Vincent de Paul Continues For nearly fifty years, Holy Cross Catholic Church through the incredible work of its tireless volunteers, dedicated themselves to the mission of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul which is building a more just world through relationships with and in service to people in need. As a Church we are grateful to reaffirm that same dedication and outreach to the poor continues and has evolved into a new partnership with Catholic Charities of Acadiana. A new avenue for this ministry will be a monthly financial gift to the Catholic Charities-Stella Maris Center. The Stella Maris Center is a hygiene facility that provides a place for homeless individuals to take a shower, use the restroom, do laundry, and take care of other basic hygiene needs. It is said; the Stella Maris Center is the first place we learn of the names of the poor among us in Acadiana. Through partnerships like Holy Cross, this local center, connects homeless individuals with additional resources to assist them as they find a way to regain life s basic accommodations of food, clothing and shelter. Built in 2012, Stella Maris Center (named after Our Lady Star of the Sea), is a safe harbor from the storms of the world. Our homeless brothers and sisters needing these basic human services will find a peaceful place of restoration. While basic food pantry donations will continue to be at accepted at Holy Cross Church, our new partnership with Catholic Services of Acadiana will focus primarily in strengthening the well-being of individuals and families in our community through our monetary donations to Catholic Services of Acadiana which will help with funds for rent and utilities in crisis situations. We continue to be hopeful that you will continue to support this ministry as we provide help for people s physical, mental, and spiritual needs. By doing this with care and respect, we show them that they matter and that they are children of our Most High God. The sense of futility is one of the greatest evils of the day People say, What can one person do? What is the sense of our small effort? They cannot see that we can only lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time; we can be responsible only for the one action of the present moment. But we can beg for an increase of love in our hearts that will vitalize and transform all our individual actions. Dorothy Day Centennial News Sunday, July 1, 2018 Letter Sets Diocese of Lafayette into Motion - The very beginnings of the Diocese of Lafayette could be traced to a meeting of regional bishops held in July At the conclusion of that meeting, a letter was sent to the Apostolic Delegate of the Holy Father in the United States. The letter proclaimed that there was unanimity among the Bishops in presenting the request for a new diocese to Your Excellency. The new diocese would consist of the western most part of the Archdiocese of New Orleans from the Atchafalaya River to the Sabine River. The total number of Catholics in the new diocese would be around 150,000 or 25% of the Catholics within the Archdiocese of New Orleans at the time. National Association of Catholic Family Life Ministries in this Centennial Year, the Diocese of Lafayette is happy to host a national Marriage and Family Conference July at the Cajundome Convention Center. 6 Worship TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the Military Vicariate. In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the Archdiocese for Military Services, USA. Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in He was assigned as a schoolmaster, but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the Nuns of the Battlefield (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. NO JOY IN THE DESTRUCTION OF THE LIVING Today s readings offer a soaring affirmation of life. The author of the book of Wisdom assures us that God did not make death and does not rejoice in the death of any living thing. We are reminded that we have been made in God s image, formed to be imperishable. In the face of all the death, illness, and destruction in the world, what are we to make of this claim? Clearly, it is our spirits that are called to eternal life. However, given the two stories in today s Gospel passage from Mark, we have evidence that indeed, God does not rejoice in the death of our bodies. When confronted with a hemorrhaging woman and the frightened father of a dying little girl, Jesus moves and speaks with confidence. Be free! he commands the long suffering woman. Get up! he calls out to the little girl. The living presence of Christ within us is the light that guides our choices, the flame that warms our hearts as we go to meet the Lord. Pope Francis Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. O LORD, BE MY HELP Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, Why? This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, Why? At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: Hear, O Lord, and have pity on me; O Lord, be my helper. Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 6
