2 TODAY S READINGS Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time DISCOVERING CHRIST A friend once told me that he lives every day of his life looking for a chance to meet the Lord. I agreed that this was the way I led my life also, until one day when I discovered exactly what he meant. He had been traveling in my neighborhood and had come across a young man, with no shoes on his feet, who was asking people for money outside the local convenience store. He told the young man that he would do what he could to get him some shoes and fresh clothing. And where did he bring this young man to find these shoes and clothes? To my house! I was taken aback when the two arrived at my front door and my friend explained the situation. He told me how excited he was that another day had passed and he found this opportunity to meet the Lord. I was dumbfounded, yet profoundly humbled by the very presence of Christ in my home. I went to my dresser drawer and hesitated briefly as I drew out some clothes I hadn t worn in a long time. Something inside me said to go to the closet. There I pulled out my favorite jeans, a fairly new shirt and sweater, some new underclothes, a pair of shoes and socks. The young man went into the bathroom to change and when he emerged, his face was nothing less than radiant. In the meantime my friend had raided my refrigerator, had made up a to-go meal, and took the young man to a place where he could spend the night. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. First Reading They shall know that a prophet has been among them (Ezekiel 2:2-5). Psalm Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy (Psalm 123). Second Reading I am content with weaknesses and hardships for the sake of Christ (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Gospel The people said: Where did this man get all this? Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary? (Mark 6:1-6). I discovered that in order to get to know Christ more and more, we have to be the ones who are diligently searching for him in the people we encounter every single day of our lives. Today the Lord Jesus asks us to pray that the abundant harvest will have more laborers. Let us pray that more and more people will have the courage to search for Christ in their everyday lives. And perhaps some will hear the voice of the Lord calling them into ordained ministry. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. ******************************************************** OBSTACLES... The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are [h]ard of face and obstinate of heart (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that [he] was amazed at their lack of faith (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. RICHES TO RAGS Why would a wealthy heiress leave a life of luxury for one of poverty and service? The life of Saint Katharine Drexel ( ) is a riches to rags story that turns the conventional American success story upside down. Katharine was the middle daughter of a wealthy, socially prominent Philadelphia banker. Her father was convinced that their large fortune meant that God had greater expectations of them concerning its use. Katharine saw the impact of her family s generosity, which influenced her to devote her life and money to the poor. Initially she wanted simply to renounce her fortune. She even asked Pope Leo XIII to send missionary priests to serve Native Americans. He suggested she do it herself, so Katharine gave up her place of privilege to found the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, devoted to serving African-Americans and Native Americans. Using twenty million dollars of her own money, she founded over sixty schools and established Xavier University in New Orleans, the only Catholic university for African- Americans. As they spread across the United States, Katharine and her sisters extended themselves tirelessly in caring for those on the margins of American society. Like the seventy disciples in today s Gospel, they and their work were despised by some. They were called vicious names and spat upon in the street. Mother Katharine, as her sisters called her, renounced wealth and embraced poverty because of her deep love for Jesus Christ, gratitude for his sacrifice on the cross, and desire to be united with him forever. In Jesus name, she and her sisters brought education, material assistance, and above all, the Good News to those despised or avoided by society at large. Blessed Sacrament Sisters continue serving today, bringing the message of today s Gospel: The kingdom of God is at hand for you (Luke 10:9). Copyright 2009, World Library Publications. 4 SAINT FRANCIS SOLANO Francis came from a leading family in Andalusia, Spain. Perhaps it was his popularity as a student that enabled Francis in his teens to stop two duelists. He entered the Friars Minor in 1570, and after ordination enthusiastically sacrificed himself for others. His care for the sick during an epidemic drew so much admiration that he became embarrassed and asked to be sent to the African missions. Instead he was sent to South America in While working in what is now Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay, Francis quickly learned the local languages and was well received by the indigenous peoples. His visits to the sick often included playing a song on his violin. Around 1601 he was called to Lima, Peru, where he tried to recall the Spanish colonists to their baptismal integrity. Francis also worked to defend the indigenous peoples from oppression. He died in Lima and was canonized in Francis of Solano knew from experience that the lives of Christians sometimes greatly hinder the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Francis lived an exemplary life himself, and urged his fellow Spaniards to make their lives worthy of their Baptism. "When Francis Solano was about to die, one of the friars asked him, 'Father, when God takes you to heaven remember me when you enter the everlasting kingdom.' With joy Francis answered, 'It is true, I am going to heaven but this is so because of the merits of the passion and death of Christ; I am the greatest of sinners. When I reach our homeland, I will be your good friend'" (contemporary biography of St. Francis Solano). ********************************************* PRO LIFE ROSARIES -Our Lady of Perpetual Help every Sat.@ 3:15; Catholic Daughters Court 2550 every 1st 10am,Grotto on Main St.; Nativity every 8:30 am; St. Peter s every 11:25 am; Prompt Succor 30 minutes before daily Mass Other Events & Diocesan News Centennial News-Sunday July 1st, 2018 Letter Sets Diocese of Lafayette into Motion The very beginnings of the Diocese of Lafayette could be traced to a meeting of regional bishops held in July At the conclusion of that meeting, a letter was sent to the Apostolic Delegate of the Holy Father in the United States. The letter proclaimed that there was unanimity among the Bishops in presenting the request for a new diocese to Your Excellency. The new diocese would consist of the western most part of the Archdiocese of New Orleans from the Atchafalaya River to the Sabine River. The total number of Catholics in the new diocese would be around 150,000 or 25% of the Catholics within the Archdiocese of New Orleans at the time. Centennial News-July 8th, 2018 Mother Teresa Visits Lafayette-One of the most memorable events of the 100 years of the Diocese of Lafayette was certainly the visit Acadiana received from a Saint. Mother Teresa, who founded the Misssionaries of Charity in 1950, came to Lafayette. Mother Teresa was a longtime friend of Fr. Joseph Brennan, and during her visit she prayed at St. Genevieve Church and spoke to the people of Acadiana in a packed Cajundome on July 10, The Missionaries of Charity continue to witness to the Gospel in Acadiana with four religious sisters serving in Lafayette today. 5 THOUGHTS / PRAYERS STEWARDSHIP PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER Glorious St. Joseph, model of all who pass their life in labor, obtain for me the grace to work in a spirit of penance to atone for my many sins; to work conscientiously, with gratitude and joy, considering it an honor to use and develop the gifts I have received from God; to work with order, peace, moderation, and patience, without ever recoiling before weariness or difficulties. Help me to work, above all, with purity of intention, having always before my eyes the hour of death and the accounting which I must render of time lost, talents wasted, good omitted, and vain complacency in success, so harmful to the work of God. All for Jesus, all for Mary, all after your example, O Patriarch Joseph! This shall be my watchword in life and in death. AMEN. (Prayer of Pope Pius IX, Abridged) ************************************************ PRAYER TO BE AN EXAMPLE OF LOVE Lord Jesus, as my children watch me, what sort of man do they see? Someone wrapped up in his own enjoyments and pursuits? Or a man living for the sake of others? Lord, please may it be the latter. Help me to have a generous and giving heart, a love that shows itself in both word and deed, starting with my wife and children and extending especially to my neighbor in need. Lord God, may I imitate You, Who came not to be served, but to serve. AMEN. ************************************************ A PRAYER OF GENEROSITY Lord God, I want to love you, not that I might gain eternal heaven, nor escape eternal hell, but simply to love you just because you are my God. Teach me to be generous. Grant me to give to you and not to count the cost; to fight for you and not to mind the wounds; to toil and not to look for rest; to labor and to ask for no reward, except the knowledge that I serve my Lord. In Jesus name, I pray. AMEN. ************************************************ A DAILY PRAYER LORD JESUS, make my feet your feet when you want to go where you re needed. Make my arms your arms when you want to reach out to a hurting person. Make my mouth open as your mouth when you want to speak the truth. Make my heart love as your heart when you want to evangelize others through me. AMEN. ************************************************ A PRAYER FOR HEALING Lord, You invite all who are burdened to come to you. Allow Your healing Hand to heal me. Touch my soul with Your compassion for others; touch my heart with Your courage and infinite Love for all; touch my mind with Your Wisdom, and may my mouth always proclaim Your praise. Teach me to reach out to You in all my needs, and help me to lead others to You by my example. Most loving Heart of Jesus, bring me health in body & spirit that I may serve You with all my strength. Touch gently this life which you have created, now and forever. AMEN. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week s Treasure mentioned the Nuns of the Battlefield, religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the Nuns of the Battlefield stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. 6 The supernatural joy of loving obedience In John 15:9-1, Jesus spells out the three basic elements of faith: obedience, love, and joy. Love is the center; it holds obedience and joy together. When we disobey, it's because we don't understand why it's unloving; we don't realize our sin interferes with our ability to love and to be loved. On the other hand, when we obey because we love, we experience great joy. Obeying because we love is a mature faith. As children, we first obeyed because we feared punishment. To experience joy, we have to let go of childish reasons for obeying God's commands. Adult obedience is this: We love God so much that we want to follow Jesus in every way and in every circumstance, because we know that he loves us and that his commands are always based on love (even when we don't understand how so), and we know that we can trust him. We'd be foolish to disobey. And we love others so much that we don't want to sin against them. Love is like the air around us: We can close ourselves up and never breathe the air, and thus we die. Likewise, we can close our hearts and never receive the love that is permeating from God in every moment, and thus our souls slowly die. But when we obey God, imitating the holiness of Christ by following his commandments, we unite ourselves to him and therefore we're immersed in his love and therefore we experience unworldly joy. If we really understand what occurs in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, joy is our primary feeling as we emerge from the confessional. It's a joy that comes from rediscovering that despite our disobedience, God still loves us, and that by reconciling with him we have opened ourselves to receive and experience his love more fully again. Consider any command that you have trouble obeying, whether from the Bible or Church teachings. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you how this command is based on love. In what ways are you missing or misunderstanding the love that's inherently there? In Acts 15:7-21, the first Christians had to learn to stretch their love for God to include the Gentiles. We all need to allow God to stretch us beyond our current limits of love. To grow in holiness, we have to grow beyond old, familiar ways of dealing with the laws that we dislike and the people who are unlikable. That's the secret to finding supernatural joy. Here's a great prayer for starting each day: "Dear God, I want to obey You today; help me to stay close to You. Thank You for being so good to me; I love You and I want to love You more. Lord Jesus, be my joy. When I am tempted to sin, help me to love others more fully. I want to remain in Your love; help me to obey the call to love."

7 Bearing more fruit from the vine Is your life making a difference? Are people brought closer to God as a result of spending time with you? (And I don't mean, do they have to run to God for help because you're causing them problems!) If you're connected to Jesus, like a branch of the vine, then the answer is yes, you are making a difference, you are evangelizing the world around you. Are people attracted to you? Do they want to be near you because of the love you share? When others go through difficulties, do they come to you for prayers, wisdom, compassionate understanding, or some other attribute of Christ? If yes, then you are bearing his fruit on the vine. We're all in need of some pruning so that our vines become more deeply grafted into Jesus and we produce better fruits. Sometimes we scrape others with dead branches that are leafless and hard and broken. Being pruned of these ugly, diseased and poisonous twigs is painful, but it's good that the Father cares enough to trim them away. Pruning enables growth, and thus we become stronger and more beautiful. In Acts 15:1-6, we have an example of well-intentioned Christians who scraped others with old branches. As Pharisees, they legalistically clung to old Jewish ways by insisting that Gentile converts subscribe to all Mosaic laws. But in the verses that follow, we see that God was able to prune them because they had grafted themselves into Jesus. They listened to Paul and Barnabas and allowed the Holy Spirit to change their minds. Jesus wants to bring peace to others through you. To bear his good fruits, let God prune away everything that does not come from Jesus: Come to Me, My friend I call you to a deeper surrender of yourself I call you to come to Me I call you to come to My freedom Unloose your heart Surrender again to Me today Come to Me, My friend I will give you all you need Believe and trust in Me I know you will not understand Only know My way is the perfect way My plan is a perfect plan for your life Turn yourself to Me again today I wish to deepen My life in you I wish to give you My love My friend, I want to transform you to make you a new creation, ever new, ever changing I want to bring you into a deeper freedom I want you to believe in My power to transform you, to heal you Do not limit what I can do There is still so much more I want to do with you and through you I call you to a deeper faith that I may be still more powerful in you.
