4 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of our great treasures is the way the Church has frequently flourished under unfavorable conditions, like the grape ivy on the mantel that refuses to die no matter how infrequently you water it or open the drapes. Like the apartheid laws in South Africa in the last century, the penal laws of Ireland were aimed at depriving the majority population of basic human rights. The Protestant parliament of Ireland enacted laws limiting the practice of Catholicism. The goal was to force conversion from popery to the Church of Ireland, and additional laws took aim at Jews, non -Anglicans, and Quakers. There were laws against intermarriage, laws against Catholics being lawyers (there was a onehundred-pound fine), a law granting lifelong income to priests who became Protestant, and a ban on weapons. In fact, until 1793, a Catholic man had to recruit and pay a Protestant man to serve in the local militia in his place! As if family life is not complicated enough in any age, the sons of a deceased father could divide his land equally, unless one became Protestant. In that case all would go to him! When allowed, new Catholic churches had to be built of wood, not stone, be off a main road or city square, have no steeple or bell, and be called a chapel. Catholic Emancipation was largely secured by 1829, but even up to the founding of the Irish State in the 1920s, some effects of the laws endured. No wonder that poor Irish immigrants to the United States frequently built gloriously beautiful churches as their first act on free soil! HE EMBRACED THEM AND BLESSED THEM Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Today Jesus stresses how children embody the reign of God. They are trusting and loving and have hearts that are open to love. They are joyful when they are made aware of God s love for them, and are eager to return that love. This is the model Jesus holds out to us if we want to welcome the reign of God. We need to have open, loving hearts. We must drop our defenses, however we came by them, and welcome Christ s love for us with joy. This is impossible for us on our own. Only the grace of God will enable us to do this, but that grace is freely and generously given. We have only to accept it. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. PLACING OUR TRUST IN GOD In today s Gospel story, the Lord Jesus embraces and blesses the children whom the apostles tried to prevent from coming to him. He simply states that whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it (Mark 10:15). Perhaps we can make a connection between what psychologists say about the trust level of the developing child and the words of Jesus. Part of our Christian journey involves learning how to place our trust in God. Sometimes this is a challenge, especially when bad things happen to us or to those whom we love. Just as the small child who fully trusts the loving parent moves through very different expressions of emotion, so, too, when we fully trust God, should we be comfortable moving from expressions of joy to cries of lament. This is an honest way of living the Christian life. Those in whom we have placed our trust are usually those with whom we feel we can share our feelings of deep joy and sharp disappointment. This is the kind of relationship that we are called to cultivate with our God. To accept the kingdom of God like a child may mean a change in the way we approach God. We are assured that when we are honest about who we are, honest with God about our deepest longings, joys, and sorrows, God s loving embrace will remain always. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. LET THE CHILDREN COME TO ME Jesus love extends not only to adults. It extends not only to those in loving and respectful marriages, but extends to all people, especially children big and little. The disciples tried to prevent parents from bringing their children to Jesus for a blessing. Jesus rebuked the disciples and said, Let the children come to me... for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. His teachings always emphasized humility and trust, and he held up these children as the best examples. Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it. Children are by nature curious and humble; they know that they are small and depend on their parents for everything. Likewise, we must be humble and recognize that we are small before God and depend on God for everything in our lives that is good. To have this attitude is to look for the kingdom of God and to be ready to enter it. And, like the children, we will be touched and blessed by Jesus and welcomed into his arms. Copyright J. S. 5 Centennial News Sunday, October 7, 2018 Cursillo comes to Lafayette - In October of 1964, the first Cursillo retreat was held in the Diocese of Lafayette. Cursillo is an apostolic movement within the Catholic Church that began in Spain in In 1961, the first English-speaking retreat was held in Texas, and soon spread across the country. The retreat is a three-day course in Christianity. For over 50 years, this retreat has continued in Prairie Rhonde. Thousands of lay faithful have made the retreat and have come to encounter Christ. The primary goal of the Cursillo movement is to help adult Christians to allow Christ to transform every aspect of our modern life. Centennial Youth Fest Honoring our Diocesan Centennial with our young people throughout the Diocese of Lafayette, we will have a Youth Gathering at Parc International Downtown Lafayette on Saturday, October 20 th from 3pm to 8pm and will include Music, Guest Speakers, Mass, Food and closing with a Candlelight Eucharistic Adoration with Bishop Deshotel. Our Youth, All Youth Groups, Families, Clergy and Religious are all invited. Please plan to attend this wonderful faith filled event. This will be a great opportunity to see the Life of Our Faith. Admission will be free (food for purchase will be available). This fall, The 177 Project is partnering with 22 different artists to bring an evening of Eucharistic Adoration and music to every single diocese in the US! On October 25, 2018, we ll be at Holy Cross Church in Lafayette, Louisiana and we want you to join us. 7 ANNULMENT PROCESS WORKSHOP Local Kairos volunteers are asking Holy Cross Parishioners to bake and donate cookies to be distributed to Angola inmates during an upcoming Kairos Weekend. Kairos Prison Ministry International, Inc. (Kairos) is a lay-led, interdenominational Christian ministry in which men and women volunteers bring Christ's love and forgiveness to prisoners and their families. The word, Kairos, is a Greek word meaning in "God's Special Time" or in the "Fullness of Time," indicating an opportunity for our participants and guests to reconsider their life choices. If you would like to provide cookies for the weekend, please carefully read the instructions below. Cookie Preparation: ALL cookies must be home baked nothing store bought, but store bought cookie dough can be used. Although Chocolate Chip Cookies are the most popular, please include other favorites such as Oatmeal, Peanut Butter, Sugar, Ginger or anything you like. Cookies should be between 2 inches and 2½ inches in diameter and not more than ½ inch thick. (Avoid icing, sugar or any messy or sticky coatings.) The KEY ingredient is PRAYER. Be sure to pray as you bake your cookies. Packing and Drop Off Location Bag 12 thoroughly cooled cookies in each quart size bag. Labels not required, but are appreciated. Cookies can be baked ahead of time and frozen. Place bagged cookies in a box. Drop off cookies anytime between now and Wednesday, November 7th, to Teri Broussard at the Holy Cross Administrative Office (Bldg. A), 415 Robley Drive, Lafayette, LA Cookies will be frozen. October 16, 2018, the Judicial Vicar for the Diocese of Lafayette, Msgr. Robie Robichaux will be presenting workshops on Declaration of Nullity and what is needed to begin the process. Two workshop times are offered: 10:00 am noon, or 6:00 pm 8:00 pm, at the Diocesan offices, Immaculata Center, 1408 Carmel Drive, Lafayette, LA. All are invited to attend.
