2 Third Sunday in Lent, March 4, 2018 The law liberates and leads us to freedom. It is to be trusted for it is a source of wisdom. Jesus speaks of the ultimate freedom to be won for us by His being raised up. He is the sign of the power and wisdom of God. Welcome! You enter this Church not as a stranger, but as a guest of God. As a baptized person, you enter it as a son or daughter of the Father in Christ. This House of God, therefore, is your family home. Come in then with humility of mind, joy of heart and thanks on your lips. Come in and pause in prayer in the midst of your busy life and its many worries. Communal Penance Services Monday, March 12 th at 6:30 pm, we will have additional priests available. Please plan accordingly. This is an additional opportunity to receive the grace given to us through the Sacrament of Penance. 3 The Third Sunday of Lent, March 4, 2018 Ex.20:1-17; 1Cor.1:22-25; Jn.2:13-25 The Book of Exodus tells us what sacrifices are acceptable to God coupled with an invitation to purify our religion of cults that have nothing to do with love of God and the neighbors. St. Paul, in his first letter to the Corinthians, tells us that we must stop reasoning like the Jews and the Greeks, rather, we should preach Christ crucified and a stumbling block to unbelievers! The Gospel recounts the story of the purification of the temple, or rather, the replacement of the old temple with the new one. We are the new temple but, like the old, we also often need purification from all that hinders our offering to God s acceptable sacrifices. Many cultures make a distinction between the Sacred and the Secular. God Himself sanctioned that distinction when He gave the Ten Commandments. Among other things, His name was to be held Holy. The people who were buying and selling in the temple did not respect the distinction between the Sacred and the Secular. Jesus reminded them by driving them out of the temple with a whip of cords. That was how much the distinction meant to Jesus (the Liturgy, the Scripture and the Eucharist). The word of God teaches that the temple of God is not just the physical building, but the individual believer as well. Jesus actually uses the word temple to refer to Himself in today s Gospel. Jesus is the original, primordial temple of God. Every baptized person is a temple of God (the Holy Spirit) in so far as we participate in the dignity and status of Jesus as Temple. The Apostle Paul enjoined the believers of his time and ours to be alive to theirs and our status as God s temple (1Cor.3:16). When Jesus compares the temple of Jerusalem to His Own body, He is revealing the deepest truth about Himself-the Incarnation. We can grasp this truth only in the light of the events of the last Passover and the Eucharist (Jn 2:22). Father Barnabas Duniya Catholic Relief Services Collection March 10 th & 11 th This year Pope Francis has spoken directly and clearly about temptations which we all encounter, and which can make our love for our neighbor grow cold. He encourages us to combat those temptations through the soothing remedy of prayer, almsgiving, and fasting. This collection funds six Catholic agencies: Catholic Relief Services, USCCB Migration and Refugee Services, Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC), USCCB Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development, USCCB Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church, and the Holy Father s Relief Fund. The gifts we have received through God s love allow us to participate in his loving care for all his children. This week we blast off with a space exploration unit. We are learning that God created the stars, the galaxies and the entire universe. God s love for us has no limits. In preparation for Lent, the children performed a ritual called putting away the Alleluias, before Lent began. The Alleluias were put in a tube, buried on our playground and will be dug up after Lent in celebration of Easter.
