2 Gospel Theme for the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time, October 15, 2017 The Lord invites us to a banquet, one of the favorite images of messianic times. This banquet is spread before us and can fully satisfy our needs, yet how often have we refused the Lord s invitation to share in the riches prepared for us? Welcome! You enter this Church not as a stranger, but as a guest of God. As a baptized person, you enter it as a son or daughter of the Father in Christ. This House of God, therefore, is your family home. Come in then with humility of mind, joy of heart and thanks on your lips. Come in and pause in prayer in the midst of your busy life and its many worries. Rosary Sunday - October 22 nd Rosary Sunday has been a tradition for the last thirty-five years where the faithful come together and pray for peace, justice and harmony throughout the world. Our parish will join Bishop Olmsted and the Diocese of Phoenix in prayer, following the 10:30 am Mass on Sunday, October 22 nd. We will be praying the living rosary after the 10:30 am Mass. All are invited to come and pray for peace, justice, and harmony throughout the world. If you would like to be part of the living rosary, please call Gaby at Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe Following tradition, we will be celebrating Our Lady s Feast by offering 46 rosaries starting October 28 th and ending with the final rosary on December 11 th in the church. Why 46? It is the symbolic number representing the 46 stars imprinted on her mantel. Rosaries will be offered each day at a different home. Please join us in this celebration. 3 28 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Is 25:6-10; Phil 4:12-14,19-20; Mt 22:1-14 Theme: we are invited to a Banquet and not to a Funeral. The banquet is the symbol of the happiness and joy present in the kingdom of God. The first reading tells us of a promise; while the gospel tells us of its actualisation. If the banquet has already begun with the coming of the Messiah, why do we still have so much hatred, so many wars and deaths all over the world? Yes, the feast has begun, but the kingdom is still awaiting its full attainment. The second reading is connected with this theme. We are given the example of the community at Philippi where there is authentic love and where a completely new life has really begun; the help and the gifts sent to Paul are proof of this. The prophet Isaiah would say: this banquet is a type of the heavenly banquet and of the Eucharist by which one is nourished with the Body and Blood of Christ. During Jesus time, a wedding feast in Palestine was a celebration involving almost the whole village. It was an occasion for renewing friendship, showing generosity and a celebration of the abundance of God s blessings received. Indeed a festive and a happy atmosphere prevailed in the entire village. Thus, Jesus compares the kingdom of God to such a happy occasion. A wedding feast prepared by a king for his beloved Son would certainly be splendid. It is, therefore, strange that the invited guests refuse to attend the feast. They ignore the king s invitation, preferring to pursue their own plans for travel and work. Some even manifest their ingratitude by killing the king s servants. When the invited guests refuse the invitation, the feast is thrown open to everyone who comes by on the road. The parable reflects the relationship between God and the Jews, his chosen people, those first to receive his invitation and may well be a reflections of our own personal relationship with Jesus in the sacraments. Christ invites us to enjoy his love, to love him above all things and to be faithful to him. But often we ignore Christ s invitation. Caught up in our selfish interest, we pay little attention to him. We do not even hear the invitation, at times, because we are full of ourselves and God is of little importance in our life. As the parable teaches, not paying attention to God is like ignoring his invitation to enjoy God s love and be part of a rejoicing heavenly community. This attitude of indifference, insensitivity and selfishness offends God. There are no exclusions with God s invitation. We all are invited because all are important and created in his likeness and image. The parable's invited guests symbolize all of humanity, who have heard God's desire that "all people" and "all nations" enter into the wedding feast of Heaven, but who may enter only through confession of their sins. We need to understand the parable's invited guests as including ourselves. Jesus died for his bride, the Church. His invitation is to accept his death, the price of our forgiveness, as the means of union with him. Through this union, Christ invites us into the eternal wedding feast of Heaven. Father Barnabas Duniya Baptism Classes The Sacrament of Baptism is very important. We continue to look at ways to improve the way we teach, the way we pass on the faith to those who are seeking the Sacrament of Baptism. We are now using "Reborn", found on Formed.org, as our main resource for baptismal preparation. The classes are still offered every month in both English or Spanish. The four hour baptismal preparation will be on the first Saturday of the month from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm or the first and second Thursday of the month from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. You can register by calling Gaby, at the Parish Office or visit our parish website, for the class schedule or to register for the Baptism online.

The time they spend in Purgatory cleanses them so that they may enter heaven free from all effects of sin. Praying for the dead, especially for those we have known, is part of Christian charity. Our own prayers and sacrifices can be offered up to relieve their suffering. The parish will offer over 40 Masses this November for all the faithfully departed whose names are written in the Book of Memory located in the Narthex of the church. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to pray for and remember your parents, children, grandparents, family and friends. Envelopes are available for your sacrificial offering to pray for the deceased. Coming soon to our parish is an opportunity for each of us to deepen our relationship with Jesus and to discover God s plan for our lives. In the Called & Gifted discernment process you will learn that every lay Christian, each baptized person without exception, has been given a unique and deeply personal call to work with our Lord. Discerning your call will give you a new perspective on your life and will help you to be more fulfilled in your work and in your relationships. Our parish is sponsoring a teaching team from the Catherine of Siena Institute in Colorado Springs to offer the introductory Called & Gifted workshop, which will be on Friday, October 27 th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and Saturday, October 28 th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. 7 Safe Environment Training for All Ministries Saturday, November 11 th 9:30 am to 12:30 pm Holy Family Parish Center We can be part of the solution Together we can prevent child abuse. Safe Environment Training (SET) is a program for all clergy, employees and volunteers within the Diocese of Phoenix. In this program you will learn myths and facts about sexual abuse and sexual offenders. You will learn detailed warning signs to watch for individuals who may abuse and how to identify children who may have been abused, and specific steps to take, guidelines for interaction, monitoring, training and responding. Anyone who desires to volunteer is required to participate in the SET which is a three hour program initially. If you wish to attend the above session, please stop by the parish office and complete a SET Education Session Attendance Form. Create a personal account with your user name/ and password. Youth Ministry Bake Sale Our youth ministry is having a bake sale on October 21 st & 22 nd after all scheduled Masses. The money that is raised goes towards sending our youth to the annual Diocese of Phoenix High School Retreat in Williams, AZ. It costs $7,000 to send 35 of our youth to the retreat every year. Whatever you can do to help is appreciated. We want our youth to experience this life-giving opportunity.
