2 The Baptism of the Lord Sunday January 13, 2019 Jesus is the beloved Son of the Father. He is the light of the nations and Lord of all Creation. To him be all Glory and Praise! Welcome! You enter this Church not as a stranger, but as a guest of God. As a baptized person, you enter it as a son or daughter of the Father in Christ. This House of God, therefore, is your family home. Come in then with humility of mind, joy of heart and thanks on your lips. Come in and pause in prayer in the midst of your busy life and its many worries. BIBLE STUDY The Bible Timeline takes participants on a journey through the entire Bible. They will go deep into each period of salvation history and discover the amazing story woven throughout all of Scripture. They will: learn how the key people, places, and events in the Bible fit together to reveal God's plan for humanity; see how the events in the Old Testament are fulfilled in the New Testament by Christ and the Church; see how God reveals himself to us through Scripture and learn how God's Word applies to your life today; develop a life-long hunger for knowing God in his word. This 24 week study is being offered on two days. It begins on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 9:30am or Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 6:30pm. 3 REFLECTION ON JESUS' BAPTISM YOU ARE MY BELOVED Today we reflect on Jesus' baptism. For sometime now we have been talking and celebrating Jesus as an infant. Today we begin celebrating Him as an adult. This we begin with His first public appearance as an adult, his baptism by John the Baptist in the river Jordan. The baptism of Jesus is an important event in each of the gospels, heralding as it does the beginning of Jesus public life and marking him out as the beloved of God. Luke s account of the baptism as we read today does not focus on the event itself but on its aftermath: the descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus while he was at prayer and the revelation of His identity as the Beloved Son of God. We all know that the mystery of the Baptism of the Lord with His Epiphany are at the heart of faith. Our faith teaches us that Jesus' baptism is a vital moment in our story of salvation, where he joined with humanity in the humble outreach to God, and where the Father and the Spirit are seen and heard to be there with him. Our gospel says that the heavens were opened, and this could be interpreted as a powerful statement of the point of the contact between heaven and earth. And with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon him, Jesus began a special journey which he invites all of us to travel with Him. He began a journey full of purpose and intent. To fulfill destiny as he carries out the will of His Father to redeem humanity. Through baptism, each of us received new identity as a beloved son or daughter of God and it is an awareness of this reality which becomes the driving force in our lives as Christians. Each of us is invited through baptism to have a sense of purpose and pattern in life. The image of God as shepherd and defender is one that we need to consider as we recall our own baptism, for the God who calls us is not some distant disembodied voice but the parent, friend and guide who says to us you are my beloved. St. Luke reveals that It was while at prayer Jesus became aware of the power of the Spirit within him and today we too are invited to pray for an understanding of what the Holy Spirit is offering us and asking of us. Whatever ministry the Holy Spirit is calling you to, never forget that you have already been anointed with that same Holy Spirit at baptism as Jesus was in the Jordan to witness. Know also that Baptism in Christ is an invitation to recognize in Jesus not just a good man, not just a good teacher, not just a compassionate human being but as the one, unique and only God who has come to save us. Therefore if we are baptized in Him, let us share His mercy and walk with faith. This is the greatest witness we can give to the redeeming glory of God we all received when we were baptized. Grace and peace be upon you! Fr. Julius Bereavement Support For sometime now we have been offering consolation to those who may still be hurting after a loss of their beloved ones through the Bereavement Group every Wednesday at 9:00 am in St. Thomas More room. We are ready to offer an evening session this January, for those who can't make it to our morning session. The group will meet in St. Maria Goretti room every Wednesday after the 5:30 pm Mass. If interested please call the parish office at

9 Entrance Song Christ, Be Our Light Bernadette Farrell Longing for light, we wait in darkness. Longing for truth, we turn to you. Make us your own, your holy people, light for the world to see. Refrain: Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness. Christ, be our light! Shine in your church gathered today. Longing for peace, our world is troubled. Longing for hope, many despair. Your word alone has pow r to save us. Make us your living voice. Longing for food, many are hungry. Longing for water, many still thirst. Make us your bread, broken for others, shared until all are fed. Longing for shelter, many are homeless. Longing for warmth, many are cold. Make us your building, sheltering others, walls made of living stone. Psalm 104 O bless the Lord, my soul. Offertory Song River of Glory Daniel Schutte Refrain: River of glory, spring of our birth, flood of God s riches poured on the earth. We are born from the darkness and clothed in the light! We are bathed in the glory of God! Fountain of mercy, grace flowing free, streams of salvation, spilling with love from a tree. Here there is haven, healing and health, joy for the asking, love in abundance of wealth. Bread for our journey, God will provide. Hope for all ages, Jesus, companion and guide. Darkness is banished, night turned away, Christ is our sunlight, lifting and leading our way. SPIRITUAL COMMUNION PRAYER (For those who are not able to receive Communion at this time) My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. Words and music used with permission. CCLI License # is printed with copyright permission from OCP Publications, 5536 N.E. Hassalo, Portland, OR /GIA Publications, Inc., 7404 S. Mason Avenue, Chicago, Il Remember that the Communion being offered around the back of the Church is strictly reserved for those who are physically unable to safely come forward for Communion. It is also, of course, for the family or friend who is here to assist the person. We remember as well, that Our Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament, is always to be revered and adored. Therefore, remember to stop and reverence Him in the Blessed Sacrament until He has passed by completely. Thank you. Communion Songs Behold the Lamb Martin Willett Those who were in the dark are thankful for the sunlight; we who live, we who die are grateful for this gift, thankful for God s love. Refrain: Behold, behold the Lamb of God. All who eat, all who drink shall live; and all, all who dwell in God, shall come to know God s glory! Peaceful now, those whose hearts are blessed with understanding of the wheat, of the wine united with God s word and the love we share. Gentle one, child of God, join with us at this table. Bless our lives; nourish all who hunger for this feast; shelter them with peace. Lord of all, give us light. Deliver us from evil. Make us one; be our shield. Make still the winds that blow; cradle us with love. Closing Song Go Tell It on the Mountain Paul Sjolund/John W Work, Jr. Refrain: Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and ev ry where; Go tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born. While shepherds kept their watching o er silent flocks by night, behold throughout the heavens there shone a holy light. The shepherds feared and trembled when lo! above the earth, rang out the angel chorus that hailed our Savior s birth. Down in a lowly manger, the humble Christ was born, and God sent us salvation that blessed Christmas morn. Prayer to Saint Michael, the Archangel St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Amen.
