2 November 18 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Treasures from our Tradition This might be a good time to stock our spiritual cupboard along with our kitchen cupboard in preparation for our celebration of Thanksgiving. Before there was a Thanksgiving Day, even before there were Pilgrims, the Roman Catholic Church celebrated Ember Days ("change-of-season days") as periods of thanksgiving for seasonal harvests. This means it is a customary Catholic way to give thanks to God through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. In the 1969 reformed calendar it was left up to the national conferences of bishops to set dates for Ember Days. (The ones on the old calendar fit a Mediterranean climate, and on the new calendar it was imagined that each nation knew best when to schedule such seasonally oriented days.) The United States bishops have not yet resurrected Ember Days, Rogations Days, and other national days of prayer. However, tucked within Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers (a book published by the U. S. bishops) is a chapter on Ember Days that proposes, among others, the three days before Thanksgiving as days of prayer, charity, and fasting. Why wait for an official proclamation? 3 Christmas Ministry Thank you to everyone who took a gift tag from our giving tree. Please note the due date printed on the tag, and return the tag with the unwrapped gift to the Christmas Ministry table. Gifts may be returned any time up through December 9th. We can also use large gift bags, boxes and tissue paper. There are still opportunities to participate in the holiday activities planned for this Christmas season; sign-up sheets are at the Christmas Ministry table. Celebrate Advent Our Church Year begins with the Season of Advent, a time of preparation, reflection and prayer that is offered so that we might prepare our minds, hearts, and homes for the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ. So often, we rush Christmas and lose the beauty and slowness of the Advent Season. Saint Anne is offering an opportunity for families and individuals to prepare for Advent by creating reminders and aids to prayer and at-home activities. Come join us on either Monday, November 26 th or Tuesday, November 27 th (5:30 7:00 pm) for Celebrate Advent!. We will offer prayer, lessons, activities, take-home crafts and resources, and a small dinner of hot soup and bread. Admission is an offering of non-perishable food for the hungry. Summer Mission Trips Information Meetings Next summer Saint Anne is joining with other Kenosha parishes on two Mission Trips one to the Appalachian region of West Virginia and the second to the Quad City region of Iowa/Illinois. These trips are an opportunity to serve others in need and to bring Christ to those we meet. Sponsored by Kenosha Catholic Youth Ministry, the Mission Trips are open to all youth of Kenosha and adults who are willing to work with our youth. Information meetings for both Mission Trips will be held on Sunday, December 9 th at 5:30 at Mount Carmel Parish and on Wednesday, December 12 th at 6:00 pm at Saint Anne Parish. Ermatinger is a well known author, and he will be signing books for sale after the Masses (good Christmas gifts). The proceeds of the sales are dedicated towards helping priests go on spiritual pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

Toffler, MD Life Matters: Doctor-Assisted Death by Suicide, Respect Life Program 2012 La Sagrada Familia Again this year 26 people, including three doctors, Dr. Pete Emer, Dr. Steve Slana and Dr. Jeff Thomas are scheduled to travel to our sister parish in the Dominican Republic to staff a three day eye clinic, assist with eye surgeries and help build a home for a Dominican family. They represent St. Anne, St. Mary and St. Elizabeth parishes in Kenosha, a variety of Milwaukee parishes and other parishes outside the Milwaukee area. We ask for your prayers and also ask that you help us by: Collecting rosaries for Dominican children and adults. Donating infant clothing and cloth diapers Donating non-prescription sunglasses & baseball caps Contributing funds to help pay for medicines and building supplies. Thank you for your continued support for our sister parish, La Sagrada Familia! Catholicism If you missed St. Anne s study of Catholicism you are invited to attend another viewing of Fr. Barron s series. This study will take you virtually to the Holy Land where Jesus walked. Five of the lessons will be held before the end of the year at St. Joseph Catholic Academy High School in the Buri Nelson theater. Dates are on Mondays: Nov. 12, 19, Dec. 3, 10 and 17. SPRED SPRED is a special religious program which is designed to meet the spiritual needs of persons with developmental disabilities from the age of six through adulthood. We are looking for people who would like to participate in this program as students and as volunteer catechists. This program is starting at Holy Rosary, but is open to anyone who has a need for SPRED or has a calling to help. 5 A timely message from the President and CEO of Catholic Relief Services Let us Radiate the Hospitality of Christ Dear Friends, The fall has now settled into its routine. Cool weather is no longer surprising, but expected. School is well underway. The trees have changed color. The holidays are on the horizon. In a few weeks, when we re pushing our shopping carts through supermarkets, we ll be filled with excitement and maybe a bit of dread as we try to put that perfect Thanksgiving meal on the table for a houseful of friends and family. It is such a delightful holiday, Thanksgiving. No presents to buy, no advertisements beyond the grocery store fliers just food and fellowship, and, for most of us, a thankful celebration of the bounty that the Lord has given us. Of course, growing up in Hong Kong, we did not celebrate this most American of holidays. I remember well my first one after I came here to go to Purdue University as a teenager. What a strange day to take a holiday, a Thursday! But that Wednesday, the campus emptied as almost everyone left to spend the long weekend at home with their families. It was clearly important to them. Obviously, I could not make such a trip, but a lady I barely knew at Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas (The Catholic Center at Purdue) made sure I would not have a lonely night in the dormitory. She invited me to her home for my first Thanksgiving meal. I have never forgotten that. In the many years I spent working on college campuses, my husband and I always sought out students who could not make it home and invited them over for Thanksgiving. It was my way of repaying the kindness shown to me. We call this hospitality. The origin of that word is interesting. It comes from Latin and Greek words that mean stranger, which sometimes could be an unfriendly stranger; hostile has the same origin. But eventually, it came to mean an almost sacred duty to take care of strangers in need. The word hospital shares the same roots. The Bible is full of stories that illustrate such hospitality. The washing of the disciples feet that Christ did on the night of The Last Supper was a traditional sign of hospitality. The host welcomed his guests with a much-welcomed service the streets were quite dusty rendered with humility that made clear all were on the same level. The parable of the good Samaritan, Pope Benedict XVI reminds us, teaches that everyone who is in need and to whom we can render assistance is our neighbor. We invite family and friends to our Thanksgiving table. Sometimes we invite people we hardly know, as the lady at Mass did for me. During this season of giving thanks, let s all think about expanding our Thanksgiving tables beyond our dining rooms, homes, neighborhoods, cities, states and even our country. Let us include the many who were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Some of those may be in your neighborhoods. Others are in Haiti and Cuba and other islands in the Caribbean. In our Thanksgiving prayers, let us remember the people around the world who are hungry, who are thirsty. Join Catholic Relief Services in setting them a place at our tables. May they too experience the bounty of the Lord celebrated in this season. Can there be a better endorsement of hospitality and expression of gratitude? May blessings overflow, Dr. Carolyn Y.
