2 THE PROMISE OF JUSTICE We are in fairly good company when we ask God for justice. Often enough we hear and agree with the lament of the people of Israel asking God why the wicked prosper. However, when we call out for justice, we usually want someone to get his or her comeuppance. God s justice is something other than this, of course. God s justice comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind. Today, Jeremiah looks ahead to a time when a just one will sprout from the shorn-off stump of Jesse of the house and family of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah s time. Israel s kings held the promise of God s fidelity, but it was difficult to see how God s promise could be realized through them. Nevertheless, Jeremiah lifts his voice and announces that the Promised One will come. Luke s Gospel echoes that announcement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. 4 NEW YORK CITY MISSION TRIP WITNESS As I sit here trying to figure out a moment to reflect on, I realize I can't because there were numerous events that impacted me both emotionally and spiritually. I think out of all the mission trips I've gone on, and this one will always stick out. I was afraid in the beginning that because of the large number of people going it would be hard to forge relationships and get comfortable but we were all friends by the end of the first day mostly cause we could all bond on our exhaustion. Throughout the week I found myself getting close to every single person on the trip. There were no cliques or "groups" everyone was just there together in Christ and I now have 20 lifetime friends whom I can laugh with, cry with, and most importantly pray with. I really couldn't imagine going with anyone else. I owe it to you all for my growth in my faith and all the moments I was able to encounter Jesus. (John 18:36) Look at your spouse today and see beyond the power struggles of who is in charge or most right. Recommit to sacrificing your life for your beloved. Remember, your children are not a reflection of you. They are souls placed on this earth by God with their own unique purpose. Our job, as parent and guide, is to help them identify this purpose.
