4 4 The Collects, Post Communion Prayer, Readings and Music for the 8.00am, 9.00am, 11.45am and 6.00pm services The Collect for The Feast of Pentecost God, who as at this time taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgement in all things and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Post Communion for The Feast of Pentecost Faithful God, who fulfilled the promises of Easter by sending us your Holy Spirit and opening to every race and nation the way of life eternal: open our lips by your Spirit, that every tongue may tell of your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. First Reading (11.45am): Genesis Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And the Lord said, Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another s speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth. Here endeth the First Lesson. Second Reading (11.45am): Acts Peter began to speak to those assembled in the house of Cornelius: I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.

5 While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days. Here endeth the Second Lesson. Anthem (11.45am) O Holy Spirit, Lord of grace (Christopher Tye) O Holy Spirit, Lord of grace, Eternal source of love, Inflame, we pray, our inmost hearts With fire from heav'n above. As thou dost join with holiest bonds The Father and the son, So fill us all with mutual love, And knit our hearts in one. If so, please send your CV to bookstor@stjohnscathedral.org.hk Filming In Church Please note that on Sunday 29th June, the Feast of St Peter and St Paul, there will be a short period of filming during the 9.00am Sung Eucharist as part of the enhancement of our new cathedral website. Just before the sermon slot we will film a 360 degree shot of the cathedral, including the congregation, to provide an online virtual tour of St John s for those visiting the website. For those who are a little camera shy this notice is just to forewarn you but for the more photogenic among us, perhaps it s time for a new hair do? Next GENESIS Course Registration We are now opening the registration for the next GENESIS Course which will begin on Monday 15th September. This will prepare candidates for baptism and confirmation at the Confirmation Service on Saturday 29th November. The course will meet on ten consecutive Monday evenings and an attendance of at least 70% is required. Please note that candidates are also expected to have worshipped weekly at St John s, or one of our daughter churches, for at least three months before the start of the course. It is therefore important that prospective candidates register for the course by the first week of July to fulfil these requirements. Please contact the cathedral office about registration and they will put you in touch with one of the clergy for an informal chat about whether this course is right for you. 8 St John s Cathedral Michaelmas Fair 2014 Appeal for Raffle Prizes * * * * * * * * * Running parallel to the Church s year is the Cathedral year with its own regular milestones and perhaps the most prominent of these is the Michaelmas Fair, which this year takes place on 25th October. Almost as soon as one Fair is over it is time to start planning for the next one. This is certainly true of the Grand Raffle which has been a feature of the Fair since time immemorial. Generous corporate donors are contributing prizes but we would also like to appeal to members of the congregation to consider donating a prize/prizes. More prizes will mean more fun and more chances to raise funds for the charities which will be the beneficiaries of the raffle proceeds: St James Settlement, St Barnabas' Society and Home, HKSKH Archbishop World Relief Fund, The Comfort Care Concern Group and HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre. These good causes provide a wide range of services and, closely associated with the Church, aim to live out the Christian principles of compassion and generosity. Any prizes will be most welcome though particularly attractive, we find, are electronic items, holidays and air tickets as well as meal vouchers. Donors of the most valuable prizes will be publicized on the raffle tickets. Cash gifts will be used to purchase prizes so small sums are very helpful too! Please follow up with/address any enquiries to Viola Ip (ip@stjohnscathedral.org.hk) or Rachel Cartland (rachel.cartland@gmail.com) Rachel Raffle Chairman * * * * * * * * * 12 oz (350 ml) Jam Jars, 1 lb Jam Jars and large Coffee Jars Needed for the Michaelmas Fair 2014 Home Produce Stall. Please bring your used, washed jam jars to the Cathedral office, which you contact at for additional information. 8

9 An Evening at Zetland Hall * * * * * * * * * Two years ago, the Michaelmas Fair Committee added a third annual event to provide parishioners with another opportunity to enjoy fellowship while at the same time raise funds for the cathedral. Shandaar India Night and the Family Fun Night were held with great success. This year, the Michaelmas Fair committee has planned a very special event in Zetland Hall, an exclusive venue that many would be curious to experience. This is an opportunity you would not want to miss. It will be an elegant yet fun evening of food and wine, music, entertainment and warm fellowship, including a very unique auction. Do mark your calendar for this very memorable event: Date: Saturday 28th June 2014 Time: Cocktails from 6.30pm Dinner starts at 7.00pm Cost: $500 per head (includes a six-course sit down dinner and free flow of wine during dinner) Dress code: Jacket and tie A few tickets are available at the Cathedral Office during office hours on weekdays. * * * * * * * * * Doris Lye Committee Member Stamps New Used or Unwanted The stamp stall needs your contributions! The stamps can be new or used and other philatelic material is also welcome. We can even sell old coins. Please pass your contributions to the Cathedral Office. Please also feel free to contact the organizer Jeff Dobbing at or jrdobbing@netvigator.com 9
