3 COLLECT, POST COMMUNION PRAYER, READINGS AND MUSIC COLLECT Almighty God, whose blessed Son was circumcised in obedience to the law for our sake and given the Name that is above every name: give us grace faithfully to bear his Name, to worship him in the freedom of the Spirit, and to proclaim him as the Saviour of the world; who is alive and reign with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING Numbers 6.22-end A reading from the book of Numbers. The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the Israelites: You shall say to them, The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. So they shall put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them. PSALM 8 This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 1 O Lord our Governor, how excellent is thy Name in all the world : thou that has set thy glory above the heavens! 2 Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength, because of thine enemies : that thou mightest still the enemy, and the avenger. 3 For I will consider thy heavens, even the works of thy fingers : the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained. 4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him : and the son of man, that thou visitest him? 5 Thou madest him lower than the angels : to crown him with glory and worship. 6 Thou makest him to have dominion of the works of thy hands : and thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet; 7 sheep and oxen : yea, and the beasts of the field; 8 The fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea : and whatsoever walketh through the paths of the seas. 9 O Lord our Governor : how excellent is thy Name in all the world! Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. SECOND READING Galatians A reading from the letter of Paul to the Galatians. When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba! Father! So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING Luke Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us. So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But 3

The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. POST COMMUNION PRAYER Eternal God, whose incarnate Son was given the Name of Saviour: grant that we who have shared in this sacrament of our salvation may live out our years in the power of the Name above all other names, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. FOR YOUR PRAYERS THIS WEEK In the worldwide Anglican Communion we pray for the Diocese of Kolhapur, North India, and The Rt Revd Bathuel Tiwade. We pray for the Province of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (Anglican Province of Hong Kong & Macau); for Paul, our archbishop and primate; and for all bishops, priests and deacons within our diocese and province. We pray within the Diocese for Emmanuel Church and the Revd Robert Martin; Pray for God s blessing on Emmanuel s growing Sunday School, Christian Formation Programmes and Healing Ministry. For their mission and outreach among the neighbours in Pokfulam. Give thanks for the many who visit Emmanuel and pray that they at least catch a glimpse of the glory of God in our worship and fellowship. 5 NOTICES A BIG THANK YOU to all who have worked so hard over the last few weeks to make our celebration of Advent and Christmas so joyful. Special thanks to St John s Flower Guild for the wonderful display of flowers in the Cathedral for Advent and Christmas services. Thanks also to the Sidesmen, Server s Guild, Cathedral Choir, Children s Choir, PIC Choir and Brass Ensemble for helping us to proclaim our Incarnational faith through beautiful liturgy and uplifting music. A happy, healthy and blessed New Year to all the St John s Family! MANY THANKS & WELL DONE! It is with much gratitude that we say a big thank you to Shirley Fu today as she retires as Choir Mistress of the Children s Choir. Over the last ten years, Shirley has built up the Children s Choir from scratch to a high standard of music and choral performance. This has been due primarily to her dedication and hard work in sharing her musical skills with the young of our parish. Through this dedication we now have two children s choirs and a youth ensemble that sing and play regularly at our Age Worship. Shirley has left a strong legacy and a firm foundation upon which to continue our music ministry among the young. Thank you, Shirley! SATURDAY MORNING EUCHARIST Please note that from Saturday 7 th January 2017 the Eucharist will be celebrated in the Cathedral at 8.30am (English) and 12.00pm (Tagalog) Please note the change of time of the midday Eucharist. THE BIBLE IN 5 STAGES The broad sweep of the bible story, from Abraham to the end of time, is revealed in this 5 week course. It s a wonderful and exciting story, greatly enriching our Christian faith and understanding. He is the chairman of the committee of preventing students suicide and a member of the Steering Committee on Population Policy and an associate member of the Central Policy Unit of the Hong Kong SAR Government. He is a recipient of the Stengel Research award in 2012, outstanding supervisor and researcher of the University of Hong Kong in 2011 and 2009 respectively; a distinguished alumni of La Trobe University. He has published more than 400 research papers relating to population health. They will be exhibited at The Nest for a month, until mid- January are welcome. Please come and have a look! GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE Did you know that the Celtic Cross outside the Cathedral is actually is a war memorial in memory of those who died in the two world wars? The garden itself, which contains the grave of Private Maxwell, is also an officially designated war grave. Access to the garden will now be restricted so that it can be kept as a place of remembrance and treated with the respect it deserves. We will remember them! 6
