3 COLLECT, POST COMMUNION PRAYER, READINGS AND MUSIC COLLECT Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: grant us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those inexpressible joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING (11.45am) Ephesians 1.11-end A reading from the letter of Paul to the Ephesians. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance towards redemption as God s own people, to the praise of his glory. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love towards all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. All This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING (11.45am) Luke All Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 3

Why not make one of these services part of your weekly devotions? Our weekday services are as follows: Monday at 8.00am (Quiet Chapel) Tuesday at 8.00am (Quiet Chapel) Wednesday at 8.00am & 6.00pm (St Michael s Chapel) Thursday at 8.30am & 1.15pm (High Altar) Friday at 8.00am (St Michael s Chapel) Saturday at 8.30am (Nave) & 12.30pm (High Altar) On major holy days there is usually a Sung Eucharist at 7.30pm in addition to the normal services. As Anglicans the Eucharist is at the centre of our lives. It is through these quiet weekday celebrations, which last for around half an hour, that we enter more deeply into the mystery of Christ's death and resurrection. 4

5 PRAYERS FOR YOUR PRAYERS THIS WEEK In the worldwide Anglican Communion we pray for the Diocese of Bermuda and The Rt Revd Nicholas Dill. We pray for the Province of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (Anglican Province of Hong Kong & Macau); for Paul, our archbishop and primate; and for all bishops, priests and deacons within our diocese and province. We pray within the Diocese for the Rt Revd Andrew Chan and all clergy of HKSKH Diocese of Western Kowloon; For disadvantaged social group within the Diocese; For the evangelistic ministries of all parishes and mission churches; the re-development of individual churches; For the co-operation of the parish churches, schools and social welfare units in our Diocese. Within the Cathedral Parish we pray for our daughter churches; Discovery Bay Church, St Stephen s Chapel, Stanley and Emmanuel Church, Pokfulam; and for their Priests in Charge. We also remember Cathedral Staff, the Cathedral Choir, and SJC Lunchtime Recitals. We also pray for our link Diocese of Toungoo, Myanmar; for St George s Church (Revd Philip Tin Ohn, priest in charged & Revd Hay Za Roe & Revd Lar Da Mu, assistants); for St Luke s Parish (Revd Hanery Kyaw Nyein); for Anglican Young People s Association (youths) and for Youth department (Saw Poe Kyaw Mya, youth coordinator). 24 th October is AYPA day. OPEN LECTURES BY JOHN KATER at Ming Hua Theological College Tuesday evenings 1 st - 29 th November pm PRAYING IN THE ANGLICAN WAY Prayer is at the heart of the spiritual life for all Christians, whatever denominational Way we follow. But Anglicans have some special ways of understanding and practicing prayer which are an important part of our identity as followers of the Anglican Way. This course will explore those special and treasured resources that enrich our life of prayer and also shape our identity as Anglicans. 5

6 NOTICES VISITORS FROM MYANMAR As part of the global Anglican church, it is important that we link up with a member of another part of the Anglican Communion for mutual learning and support. Since early this year, the Cathedral has been exploring building up a link relationship with the Anglican Diocese of Toungoo in Myanmar. A cathedral delegation visited Toungoo earlier this year and was most inspired by how creative and dedicated this remote diocese was, despite of the scarce resources they had. We have invited their delegation to visit St John s from 26 th October to 2 nd November to further formalize this bond. The delegation includes: 1. The Rt Revd John Saw Wilme (Diocesan bishop) 2. The Revd Canon Saw Yo Shia (Dean of St Paul s Cathedral) 3. The Revd Saw Aung Khaing Nyunt (Principal of St Peter s Bible School) 4. Miss Nant Elizabeth Ei Hnin Phyu (delegate of Anglican Young People s Association) This morning, Bishop John is preaching at the 9.00am Eucharist while the Revd Saw Aung Khaing Nyunt (Fr Jimmy) is preaching at the 11.45am service. They are also giving a special presentation on the situation and ministries in Myanmar from 10.40am to 11.45am in the Li Hall. We invite you to this presentation and learn about their remarkable ministries in Myanmar. For those who wish to support their diocese through a donation will also have a chance to do so. All Souls Day Eucharist Wednesday 2 nd November Fauré Requiem 7.30pm A Requiem Eucharist for the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed by name sung by the Cathedral Choir to the famous setting by Gabriel Fauré. 7 NOTICES MICHAELMAS FAIR The Fair held yesterday was a great success. Members of the congregation, visitors, young and old, mingled with one another to share and enjoy a funfilled day. Praise be to God! We pray that everyone who came experienced the joy and love of Christ among us. Thanks and congratulations to the organizing committee headed by Chairlady Julianne Doe, performers, donors, stallholders, congregational members and Cathedral staff who made it all possible. Julianne Doe PARENTS AND TODDLERS: 3rd NOVEMBER 2016 We are so happy to be able to re-start our group for newborn babies and toddlers up to 2 years. This group had to close for 5 months because of the extensive renovations. We meet pm each Thursday in the Fanny Li Hall. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet with other families especially if you are new to Hong Kong. Please pop in and meet them no need to book. THE FOOD COLLECTION BOX: A reminder You can donate food from the Cathedral directly to the hungry in our city. The Food Collection Box has been in place at the Cathedral Porch for several months. It is part of a scheme run by St James Settlement which encourages the members of the Cathedral congregations to make food donations to stock up their food banks located around Hong Kong. To those of you who have already made generous donations a big THANK YOU. The sturdy box will take dry goods like rice, noodles and canned foods. The food needs to be well within its sell-by date with packaging intact. Guidelines for donors can be found on the box. This is an opportunity to give direct and regular assistance to those who struggle to put a meal on the table. The neglected elderly, the afflicted who cannot work and the working poor including whole families rely on the food banks for proper nutrition. These people are the suffering side of the wealth gap. You could buy an extra item or two in your shopping and drop it in the Food Drop Box when you come to church on Sunday or any day of the week if you are passing by the Cathedral. The box is available in the Porch from 7.30am to 6.00pm daily. 7
