3 INTERCESSIONS You have called us to be a light to the World, so that those in darkness come to you. May our lives shine as a witness to the saving grace you have given for all. We pray for the mission and unity of the Anglican Church throughout the World, remembering today the diocese of Kondoa (Tanzania) In our diocese we pray for Joe Hawes (Dean) and the Cathedral Chapter and Staff. That our stewardship will enable our ministry to grow. In our life at the Tower we pray for all sharing in the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity. For our Mayor and Local Councillors and all taking part in the Civic Service today. For Jeanette and Roger and all who are helping us to maintain our regular worship and the active life of our Church Community. We pray for all who work in and visit our Town Centre. For Town Pastors and others who care for those on our streets at night. We pray for peace in the World: for those living amidst conflict and an uncertain future. For all who are experiencing extreme weather conditions as our climate is showing signs of change. We pray for our own nation as time to resolve Brexit negotiations becomes limited. That an appropriate way forward may be agreed. We pray for those we know who are sick or otherwise distressed including: Michael Bradberry, Jean Goodson, Harley Shinn, Cullum Doe and Jaydon McConnachie. We continue to pray for, Adrian Parry, Barbara Bellamy, Angela Pantelis and Bob & Alexander Tostevin. We pray for those now unable to be regularly with us in Church, including this week: Joyce Courage and Lilian Caudle. Be with them and those who care for them. We pray rest in peace and rise in glory for those who have recently died, and we pray for all who mourn. We give thanks for the lives of those whose remembrance falls at this time of year, among them Millicent Fisher and Winifred Richardson. Names and Topics for the prayer lists should be given to the Administration Office. PRAYER FOR THE DAY (The Collect) Almighty God, whose Son revealed in signs and miracles the wonder of your saving presence: renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us by your mighty power; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 3
4 BIBLE NOTES Today s readings seem an unlikely combination, but they do have some ideas in common. They are both concerned with power and authority. In 1 Corinthians, Paul is dealing with a dispute in the Church about what are the most important functions of ministry and especially with those who thought ecstatic experience set them apart from other members. There is no hierarchy of gifts. We are all members one of another. In the first reading we hear of the first of what John calls the Signs of Jesus and are usually followed by Jesus teaching about his mission and ministry. Here, for John, Jesus demonstrates his power and authority in replacing the old religious beliefs and ceremonies with new Wine of the Spirit. Such is Jesus power and authority that his disciples believe in him. Canon Roger FIRST READING 1 Corinthians Concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says Let Jesus be cursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. GOSPEL John There was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. Now standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. 4
5 And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. ANTHEMS SUNG BY THE CHOIR TODAY 9.30AM, Cornelius: Verse Three Kings from Persian lands afar to Jordan follow the pointing star: and this the quest of the travellers three, Where the new-born King of the Jews may be. Full royal gifts they bear for the King; Gold, incense, myrrh are their offering. The star shines out with a steadfast ray; The kings to Bethlehem make their way, and there in worship they bend the knee, as Mary s child in her lap they see; their royal gifts they show to the King; gold, incense, myrrh are their offering. Thou child of man, lo, to Bethlehem the Kings are travelling, travel with them! The star of mercy, the star of grace, shall lead thy heart to its resting place. Gold, incense, myrrh thou canst not bring; offer thy heart to the infant King. Chorale How brightly shines the morning star! With grace and truth from heaven afar Our Jesse tree now bloweth. Of Jacob s stem and David s line, for thee, my Bridegroom, King divine, my soul with love o erfloweth. Thy word, Jesu, Inly feeds us, rightly leads us, life bestowing. praise, O praise such love o erflowing. CHURCHES TOGETHER IN IPSWICH TOWN CENTRE United Service for the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity Sunday 27 th January 5pm at Christ Church Tacket Street Please support this service as an expression of our united mission. Christ Church have a new Minister and it would be good to show our support for him in this way. There will be no evening service at SMLT. 5
6 FUNDRAISING FOR NEW CHOIR LIGHTING For quite some time the lamps on the stalls have restricted the number of choir members we can fit in the chancel stalls. The lamps have become more of an issue now that we have two flourishing chorister sections and an adult soprano section which sing together with the altos, tenors and basses at regular intervals. We are now in a position where we have a solution that has been approved by the diocesan authorities and we are looking for funds to pay for the project. The new lights are to be mounted either side of the chancel, mounted on the screen behind each side of the choir. After they are installed and functioning as expected, the lamps are to be removed from the stalls. The Music Department is embarking upon a fundraising campaign to raise 1, to cover the cost of building and installation of this new lighting system. Albeit a substantial amount of money, it is far cheaper than other estimates. ( 12k to 40k to relight the chancel only). We are looking to raise the money in the next few months so that the new lights can be installed after Easter. If you can contribute towards the cost of this project, I and countless future generations of choir members would be sincerely grateful. For further information, please get in touch with Katrina or me after a service or via the Parish Office. Many thanks.
