3 COLLECT, POST COMMUNION PRAYER, READINGS AND MUSIC COLLECT Almighty Lord and everlasting God, we beseech you to direct, sanctify and govern both our hearts and bodies in the ways of your laws and the works of your commandments; that through your most mighty protection, both here and ever, we may be preserved in body and soul; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING Genesis a The LORD appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent entrance to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. He said, My lord, if I find favour with you, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on since you have come to your servant. So they said, Do as you have said. And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of choice flour, knead it, and make cakes. Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate. They said to him, Where is your wife Sarah? And he said, There, in the tent. Then one said, I will surely return to you in due season, and your wife Sarah shall have a son. And Sarah was listening at the tent entrance behind him. PSALM 15 1 Lord, who shall dwell in thy tabernacle : or who shall rest upon thy holy hill? 2 Even he that leadeth an uncorrupt life : and doeth the thing which is right, and speaketh the truth from his heart. 3 He that hath used no deceit in his tongue, nor done evil to his neighbour : and hath not slandered his neighbour. 4 He that setteth not by himself, but is lowly in his own eyes : and maketh much of them that fear the Lord. 5 He that sweareth unto his neighbour, and disappointeth him not : though it were to his own hindrance. 6 He that hath not given his money upon usury : nor taken reward against the innocent. 7 Whoso doeth these things : shall never fall. SECOND READING Colossians He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as to present you 3

I, Paul, became a servant of this gospel. I am now rejoicing in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am completing what is lacking in Christ s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. I became its servant according to God s commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations but has now been revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. It is he whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ. All This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me. But the Lord answered her, Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her. All This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. POST COMMUNION PRAYER Strengthen for service, Lord, the hands that have taken holy things; may the ears which have heard your word be deaf to clamour and dispute; may the tongues which have sung your praise be free from deceit; may the eyes which have seen the tokens of your love shine with the light of hope; and may the bodies which have been fed with your body be refreshed with the fullness of your life; glory to you for ever. To include someone in this prayer list, please contact Elisa, Tel: THE SEVENTH GENERAL SYNOD OF HKSKH Briefing Session on the Resolutions Date: 13 th August 2016 (Sat) Time: pm Venue: School Hall, SKH Tang Siu Kin Secondary School, 9 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai, HK The Seventh General Synod of HKSKH was convened from 5 th 9 th June. The meeting passed 23 resolutions in total, many of which are going to bring changes to the operations of parishes / mission churches and to the Church in general. To implement the resolutions and let all parishioners understand the content of the various resolutions, the Standing Committee of the Seventh General Synod will organise a briefing session on the resolutions, to be led by the Revd Canon Peter Koon, the Provincial Secretary General, and Dr Moses Cheng, the Chancellor. CHRISTIANS IN CENTRAL TUESDAY LUNCHEON 26 th July pm Li Hall Speaker: The Revd Dr Stephen Cherry Theme: God, Greed and Money Is greed good? It has rarely been necessary to ask this question, since greed is one of the traditional deadly sins of Christianity. And yet Gordon Gekko made his famous statement in the film Wall Street, it has been both more necessary and yet more difficult for people to say what is actually wrong with it. In this talk the Revd Dr Stephen Cherry quickly surveys the history of greed and what a contemporary and grown-up understanding of greed would look like and how we might change our lives and structures if we really believed it to be a sin. The Revd Dr Stephen Cherry is Dean of King s College Cambridge and author of a number of books including, 'The Dark Side of the Soul; An Insider s Guide to the Web of Sin. Taking food to Street Sleepers Friday 29 th July from 6-10pm This is in partnership with the Sai Baba Hindu Group. This caring group involves a parishioner from St John's and has an established programme for feeding & helping street sleepers in Hong Kong. We will go in cars to four different locations. 2. Mid Autumn Festival Party with Seniors Training on 6 th August am Party on 3 rd September 6-8pm This event is in partnership with Siu Ming from HKSKH Welfare Services. Previously we have helped with a Christmas Party and a senior's lifewriting project. As before, expect a very well-run programme with a lot of fun and direct engagement with the seniors in the western district. 7 NOTICES St John s Cathedral Pilgrimage to Fujian, China Fuzhou Quanzhou Xiamen 8 Days: 9 th - 16 th October 2016 Led by The Revd Dr Philip Wickeri and The Very Revd Matthias Der Fujian is a maritime province with a long history. With a rich agricultural base, it has been growing rapidly in industry and commerce over the last few decades. Fujian also has a rich cultural history and we will visit a number of ancient historical sites. Fujian was once a major evangelistic base for Anglican s missions in mainland China. Churches, schools and hospitals with Anglican connection were built in the province with the largest Anglican community in the country. This year, we are tracing heritage of our Anglican tradition back to three cities in Fujian province, so as to better understand mission history, church growth and contemporary church development in mainland China. Although there are no longer Anglicans in Fujian, the church continues to draw on this Anglican heritage. The pilgrimage to Fujian will be an enlightening experience and a chance to take on commitments to God s calling. Join us now!
