3 PRAYERS FOR YOUR PRAYERS THIS WEEK In the worldwide Anglican Communion we pray for our link Diocese of Toungoo, Myanmar, The Rt Revd Saw Wilme (Bishop John); his priests and people. We pray for the evangelistic and mission work conducted throughout the Diocese. Bishop John has requested our prayers for Myanmar at this critical time; let us pray that the their government will be able to solve this crisis promptly and that different political, religious and ethnic groups will be able to work together for peace and justice. We pray for the Province of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (Anglican Province of Hong Kong & Macau); for Paul, our archbishop and primate; and for all bishops, priests and deacons within our diocese and province. We pray within the Diocese for the evangelistic mission of the Diocese of Western Kowloon, HKSKH; For the ministry of the Rt Revd Andrew Chan and all clergy; For the churches, schools and social services; For the development of the mission churches (Church of Divine Love and Church of Shalom) to become parishes; For vocations to the ordained ministry; For all the citizens living in the Diocese of Western Kowloon. 4 NOTICES TODAY S GUEST PREACHERS Malaysian-born Br Alfred Boon Kong SSF became a member of the Third Order of the Society of St Francis during his student days in New Zealand. Ten years later, he joined the First Order friars in Brisbane in After ministries in the Stroud hermitage and Auckland friary, Alfred was based in Kuching at the Diocesan Theological College assisting in training local clergy. Returning to Australia in 2003 to serve as minister provincial or leader of the friars in Australia, Korea, Sri Lanka and New Zealand, he completed nine years in that role in He went to Canterbury UK for a sabbatical at the Franciscan International Study Centre to do their Franciscan Spiritual Direction programme. He is now at Stroud involved in various ministries of the hermitage and enjoys gardening and plant propagation. Br Alfred will preach at the 9am, 10.30am and 2pm Eucharists today. Br Martin John SSF was born in England and worked as a paediatric osteopath for 20 years both in clinical practice and education. He joined the Society of St Francis 11 years ago and has just taken his Life Vows. Having gained experience of Franciscan life in both large friaries and small urban houses, he is currently Assistant Guardian at Glasshampton Monastery which is a contemplative house of prayer near Birmingham. Br Martin will preach at the 6pm Taizé Eucharist this evening. CLERGY Dean Matthias is in the UK and will be representing the cathedral at the annual meeting of the Compass Rose Society. He has also been invited to deliver the R. O. Hall Memorial Lecture at Ripon College, Cuddesdon. He will also visit our former dean, The Very Revd Stephen Sidebotham and his wife Peggy. CHRISTIANS IN CENTRAL Tuesday, 7 th November, years ago on 31 st October the German monk Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the church door of Wittenberg, Germany which led to the Reformation. The Christian world, in fact the world as a whole has changed dramatically since his action that day. How did it happen? What does the Reformation mean for us today? The next Christians in Central Luncheon Talk will explore the event and its implication. With the title The Reformation: How on earth did Luther do it?, Dr Gareth Jones, the Principal of Ming Hua Theological College will deliver the address. Part One: is an introduction to Jesus. Part Two: is a baptism and confirmation course. (Candidates for baptism and/or confirmation are expected to complete both parts.) The course explores the Christian faith in a relaxed atmosphere with a meal and informal discussion. Faith Begins is rooted in the Anglican tradition which values the bible, tradition, and reason, and interprets them in the light of a modern understanding about life and the world we live in. 6 NOTICES MRS LILY PONG SCHOLARSHIP FOR CHURCH ORGANISTS Open for Application ( ) The Mrs Lily Pong Scholarship for Church Organists for admission in September 2018 is now opened for application. Sponsored by St Paul s Church and the family of the late Mrs Lily Pong, the scholarship aims at providing subsidy to existing and potential church organists in HKSKH to be better equipped with organ playing techniques and church service playing skills. The scholarship will provide a scheme for one-on-one tuition with a qualified professional organ instructor in Hong Kong over a period of no more than three (3) years, depending on the ability of the participants. The participants must commit to finish the scheme and serve as organist at his/her parish/mission church for at least two (2) years after completing the scheme.
