THE HABIT OF PRAYER The habit of prayer is no burden to any one, for we can pray worthily at any time, any place and in any posture. Even the motion of the lips is not necessary. The mind and heart can be engaged in it while we go about our daily work. Moreover, prayer produces a delicious feeling of hope and rest in God, and this feeling is worth more than all the happiness that wealth can purchase or the world can give. God respects the sincerity of our prayers and how heart-sprung they are. Any questions, please feel free to call the Diocese of Trenton (609) One chocolate doughnut remains. Your out of town adult guests are busy packing and its just you and the doughnut against the world. Just as you finish wiping the chocolate off your mouth, a guest appears in the kitchen and says, I didn t have any breakfast, I guess that last chocolate To participate in the Anniversary Blessing Mass and celebration, please register through our parish office at your earliest convenience. The doughnut is waiting for me. deadline for registration is September 15, (732) You then say, Oops. We are all guilty of being selfish, putting our wants above others wants, hoarding our money or possessions, or bragging about our kids accomplishments. If selfishness is defined as acting according to one s interests and needs without regard for the needs of others, then kindness is treating others the way we would like to be treated. Our lives are not to reflect selfishness but kindness. To do this we must faithfully submit our selfish desires to the Holy Spirit. Maybe someday someone will offer the last chocolate doughnut to you.. Be kind! Enrich Your Character Father Max s Smile Corner You can tell you are getting older when: You look forward to a dull evening. Dialing long distance wears you out. What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined for life...to strengthen each other, to rest on each other in all sorrow, to minister to each other in all pain, to minister to each other in silence. George Eliot Your back goes out more than you do. You decide to procrastinate and never get around to it. Your little black book contains only names ending in M.D. ANNUAL RAFFLE DRAWING st Prize #09917 Amount: $2, nd Prize #23830 Amount: $ rd Prize #17337 Amount: $ Congratulations to all our Annual Raffle winners. The raffle was drawn on Sunday, August 14th at 2:00 PM Father Sebastian told Dolly that she should be thinking about the Hereafter. Dolly told him, Father, I do it all the time. No matter where I am; in the living room, in the kitchen, upstairs, den, or even in the basement. I am always asking myself,.. Now, what am I here after?

6 Page 7 The Life of Jesus Matthew 9:35-10, 5-16; Mark 6:6-13; Luke 9:1-6 MISSION OF THE APOSTLES From Nazareth Jesus journeyed through Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing all kinds of sickness and infirmity. He was moved by the helplessness of the people who lacked spiritual direction and He said to the disciples: The harvest indeed is abundant, but the laborers are few. Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers into His harvest. Then Jesus called the Twelve and gave them power to cast out evil spirits and to heal all diseases and infirmities. He sent them forth in pairs saying: Do not go in the direction of the Gentiles, nor enter the towns of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, preach the message, The kingdom of heaven is at hand! Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out devils. Freely you have received, freely give. Do not keep gold or silver, or money in your girdles, no wallet for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staff, for the laborer deserves his living. They were to take the barest essentials for their journey. God would provide for the needs of His workers. Whatever town or village you enter, inquire who in it is worthy and stay there until you leave. As you enter the house salute it. If then that house be worth, your peace will come upon it, but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. Whoever does not receive you, or listen to your words, go forth outside that house or town and shake off the dust from your feet. Amen I say to thee, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Comorrah in the day of judgment than for that town. Behold, I am sending you forth like sheep in the midst of wolves. Be therefore wise as serpents and guileless as doves. Jesus then continued His way alone, and the Twelve departed on the mission He had given to them. Summary: There are too few laborers for the great harvest of souls in the world. When we reflect on this truth, we almost immediately think of praying for more clergy. Recent Popes have stressed the fact that the work of Christ will not be done unless lay apostles shoulder some of the responsibility. The Life of Christ Catholic Press Be Mindful of Your Church Dear Lord! You sent Your Son to preach the Good News to the poor. Give us the grace to proclaim the Gospel. You sent Your Son to sow the word through all the world. Send workers into the harvest. You seated Your Son at Your right hand in glory. Gather our beloved deceased into the joy of Your kingdom. The Magnificat

7 Page 8 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives. August 21 St. Pius X, Pope August 22 Queenship of The Blessed Mother August 23 St. Rose of Lima August 24 St. Bartholomew, Apostle August 25 St. Louis, King of France August 25 St. Joseph Calasanz, Priest August 26 St. Caesarius of Arles, Bishop August 27 St. Monica ST. JOSEPH CALASANZ Patron of Christian Schools Joseph was the youngest son of a noble family and studied canon law and theology at several universities in Spain. His father wanted Joseph to marry and carry on the family name, but he chose the priesthood instead. Joseph was ordained to the priesthood and held several important administrative posts before quitting his promising career in the Church and traveling to Rome. When he arrived in Rome, Joseph was appalled by the ignorance of the poor in the city, especially the orphaned and homeless children. Believing that education could help, he took the lead himself along with three other priest and opened the first free school. With financial assistance from the Pope, the school was able to grow and soon its pupils numbered in the hundreds. As superior of his Order, Joseph faced several obstacles and his Order was nearly destroyed by internal dissension. Joseph said, The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord. Joseph died at the age of 90 but his Order continues and today he is honored as the Patron of all Christian schools. ST. PIUS X Born in the village of Riese, Italy to a seamstress mother and cobbler father, Guiseppe Sarto spent most of his priestly life ministering to the people in and around Venice. As pastor, he gave to the poor from his own modest household. As Bishop and then Patriarch of Venice he reformed lax seminaries, yet found the time to teach catechism to children. Guiseppe Sarto was elected Pope Pius X in 1903 and led the Church with forthright teachings on the importance of catechists, Catholic Action and the errors of Modernism. I was born poor, I lived poor and I die poor was his final testament. He died in QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED MOTHER This feast reminds us that holiness means depending on God. The Queenship of Mary invites us to exercise our obedience to God in a way that results not in submission but likeness. St. Maximilian Kolbe wrote that Mary has a right to be loved as Queen of all hearts so that through her, hearts would be cleaned. Mary s fullness of power is expressed in her intercession for us and her medication of graces, so that we receive all personal graces from God. _ ST. MONICA Monica was married and had three children. She kept peace in her family quelling her husband s rages and winning the heart of her mother-in-law. After her husband s death Monica sought the salvation of her son Augustine. For fifteen years, she pursued him in earnest, with tears, prayers and laments. Augustine was received into the Church and later became Bishop and Doctor of the Church.

8 Page 9 Our Faith LITANY OF HUMILITY Jesus meek and humble of heart, hear us now: From the fear of being humiliated. From the fear of being despised. From the fear of suffering rebukes. From the fear of being forgotten. From the fear of being ridiculed. From the fear of being wronged. From the fear of being suspected. Jesus, deliver us: That others may be loved more than us.. That others may be esteemed more than us. That others may be chosen before us. That others may be preferred. Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. Bishop James McNulty WHY SHOULD I GO TO MASS? For each Mass we hear with devotion, Our Lord sends a saint to comfort us at death. (Revelation of Christ to St. Gertrude.) St. John Vianney said, If we knew the value of the Mass we should die of joy. St. Pio said: The world could exist more easily without the sun than without the Mass. The Blessed Mother Mary once told her faithful servant, My Son so loves those who assist at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass that if it were necessary He would die for them as many times as they re heard Masses. The Holy Mass would be of greater profit if people had it offered in their lifetime, rather than having it celebrated for the relief of their souls after death.
