3 EPISTLE READING: St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 13:11-14; 14:1-4 Brethren, salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; the night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. As for the man who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not for disputes over opinions. One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? A Visit from Henry Thoreau Henry David Thoreau will be portrayed by Dr. Kevin Radaker, Professor of English at Anderson University, TODAY, Sunday, February 26, at 4pm at the Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 3650 W 106th St., Carmel. This monologue is set in the year 1860 when the United States was facing some challenges. Lenten Bible Study - Galatians A series of five Lenten Bible Study sessions will be offered on Tuesday evenings at 7pm from February 28 - March 28. Father Lucas will lead a study of St. Paul s letter to the Galatians join us to explore the various themes and the application of this epistle in our lives today. 5 Hymnology Our Church School Hymnology class students in Grades 1 4 will sing for the first time this year during Holy Communion on the Sunday of Orthodoxy, March 5. The children worked especially hard learning the Communion Hymn, Praise the Lord (Enite ton Kyrion) in different languages. They will perform other songs including, Receive Me Today O Son of God (Tou Dhipnou Sou to Mistikou). Leisure Timers The Leisure Timers will meet on Thursday, March 9, at 11:30am at Holy Trinity Church. Our own Georgia Buchanan will be speaking about her very interesting involvement in Indianapolis charities, most especially, SPECIAL OLYMPICS, and how she became a well known Indianapolis author. The Lenten Retreat will be held on Saturday, March 18 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Registration and a light breakfast will begin at 9:30am. Register at the Lenten Retreat table in the Founders Walk after Divine Liturgy or philoptochos@holytrinityindy.org. The retreat is sponsored by Philoptochos and the Ladies of St. George. The guest speaker will be Kh. Stefanie Yazge, PhD from St. Vincent College in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Please remember to bring your Bible. Church School Save the date for a Bee-Treat on May 5-6. This is a Pan-Orthodox retreat for youth (6th- 12th grades), young adults, parents and anyone interested in youth faith formation. It will be presented by The Department of Youth & Young Adult Ministries of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. 6 Helping the Hungry Please bring flip-top cans of soup, paper towels, toilet paper, paper plates and granola bars to Church, and put them in the blue Philoptochos bin. The soup will be given to patrons of the Soup Kitchen as a takeout. Chicken Noodle soup is preferred. Iconography Phase 3 Those interested in donating an icon for Phase 3 are encouraged to review the updated list of available icons. The process is the same as Phase 2 -- "first come, first served". Please include the Code Number on the memo line of the check. If another means of donating the funds is used, the Code Number should be either written on paper or sent in an to avoid any confusion. When full payment is received, the icon is then considered donated and thus not available to anyone else. A display of sketches for Phase 3 is in the Founders' Walk. If a particular Saint is not included on the present list, please inform Father Bill in written form which other Saint might be considered. When Dr. Kordis begins his work, more Saints may be included. Parish Office Request To assist our Parish Office Staff in keeping accurate records, please include the purpose of each donation in any form. For example, when donating by check, please include the words Stewardship 2017 or "sound system" on the memo line; if giving via Paypal, include the giver s full name and address, and in the Notes section, enter the purpose; OR when sending cash, please write the giver's name and the purpose on a note or envelope. The Office Staff greatly appreciates the cooperation of our parishioners, enabling the donation to be properly recorded in the appropriate account. Stewardship Everyone who has not yet completed a 2017 Stewardship Commitment Card is encouraged to do so. Blank cards are available in the Founders' Walk following the Divine Services and online at Drop Box For convenience, a Drop Box that enables contributions, forms, Stewardship cards, and any other documents to be turned in, is located inside the Founders Walk at the Office Entrance. This is a locked box that only the Staff can access. 10 The Small Church of the Home When St. Paul sent greetings to the families of faithful Christian parents, he called them the Church of their household. St. John Chrysostom also referred to the Christian family as the Small Church. This Christian understanding of the family as the Small Church has unfortunately fallen out of our understanding in 21 st century America. Nevertheless, sociological research has reminded us of the importance of recovering this ancient Christian teaching. Out of every 10 young adults who leave home, only 4 will continue to attend Church. That means the majority, 60%, will fall away from the Church! When researchers looked into the difference between the 40% who remain active and the 60% who lapse, they found a distinct difference between these two populations. It was NOT simply weekly Church attendance both groups had this, and weekly Church attendance was a minimum requirement It was NOT an active youth group both groups had this The unique attribute of the 40% who remained active in their Church was DAILY PRAYER AND DISCUSSION OF THE FAITH AT HOME WITH THEIR PARENTS This data simply wakes us up to the fact that, if we want our children to continue to practice the Christian Faith, and to make it their own, we must pray with them daily (this is in addition to dinner prayers), and discuss the Christian faith with them daily. So just what does the family as the Small Church look like? Husband and Wife pray together with their children every day Father and Mother teach the Christian faith to their children Family members encourage one another to live according to the teachings of the Church Father and Mother give selflessly, for the sake of one another and of their children; the children respect and follow their parents example The family serves others in their community, because of their love for Christ We are taught in the Scriptures that God has given parents to children to be their teachers in fact, the Hebrew word for parent comes directly from the word teacher. Even if we have not previously lived up to this expectation, the best time to start is today. Holy Trinity will begin providing resources to help our families become the Small Churches they are called to be. We can begin now, simply by praying together with our children at the same time every day, reading the daily Scripture Readings (found on Holy Trinity s website under Saints, Feasts, and Readings for the current day) and praying the Lenten Meditation that is found in the Koinonia. Giving our children a living Christian Faith that they make their own which they in turn pass on to their children requires hard work, but it is the greatest gift we could ever give them.
