3 EPISTLE READING: Acts of the Apostles 5:12-20 IN THOSE DAYS, many signs and wonders were done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high honor. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and pallets, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed. But the high priest rose up and all who were with him, that is, the party of the Sadducees, and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the common prison. But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out and said, "Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life." GOSPEL READING: John 20:19-31 THE CONFESSION OF FAITH (Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed) I believe in one God, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not created, of one essence with the Father through Whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried; And He rose on the third day, according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father; And He will come again with glory to judge the living and dead. His kingdom shall have no end. 4 Church School Today and April Class after Communion until 11:45 The 5th & 6th grade class will be making prosforo on Sunday, May 3rd. All students and parents are welcome to participate. They will begin at 8:30 am. Meet in the kitchen. This is a tradition for the teachers and students of the 5th & 6th grade and also a beautiful way to learn about our faith. The Milton & Theodora Dickos Church School Award requirement forms need to be handed into classroom teachers by May 17th. Parents and students start collecting the needed signatures now. HOPE/JOY The next HOPE/JOY event is Sunday, April 26 from 1pm to 3pm at the Zionsville Nature Center located at 690 Beech Street in Zionsville near the public library (about 10 minutes from Holy Trinity Church). Our kids will go on a nature walk at the 10-acre nature park and learn about local Indiana habitats, native species and walk around the wetlands to look for wildflowers and frogs. After the nature walk the kids will explore the Nature Center and have a snack. Cost is $4 per child and adults are free. St. John's Patristic Study St. John's Patristic Studies is beginning a new study, entitled "Victory in the Unseen Warfare" by Scupoly St. Nikodemos and Fr. John Spraks. The study explains the daily spiritual warfare all of us face, yet we know very little about. This knowledge is imperative for growth and protection in Christian living. Classes begin Wednesday, April 29 at 7pm and will continue until we break for summer. All are invited. Passport to Greece Saturday, May 2, 6-10pm in the Holy Trinity Founders' Walk. There will be a buffet dinner. Admission is $15 and $8 for kids under 12. Sponsored by Philoptochos. Golf for Ground Zero the Rebuilding of St. Nicholas Church Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church will be sponsoring a charity golf outing to benefit the rebuilding of St. Nicholas Church, the only Christian Church that was destroyed during the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. The outing will be the afternoon of June 22 and will be held at the prestigious Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel. 5 Volunteer Day May 16 from 9am - 12pm, Philoptochos and HOPE/JOY are sponsoring a Volunteer Day of Service for those interested in our mission of serving God by helping others. A variety of projects will be offered for men, women and children of all ages. This is a wonderful opportunity to share our time and talents as a community. 6 HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Saint John of Kronstadt ( ) says, in partaking of the Holy Sacrament, be as sure that you partake of the Body and Blood of Christ, as you are sure that every moment you breathe air. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem (about ) also teaches us Since Christ Himself has declared the bread to be His Body, who can have any further doubt? Since He Himself has said quite categorically, This is My Blood, who would dare to question it, and say that it is not His Blood? Therefore, it is with complete assurance that we receive the bread and wine as the Body and Blood of Christ. His Body is given to us under the symbol of bread, and His Blood is given to us under the symbol of wine, in order to make us by receiving them one body and blood with Him. Having His Body and Blood in our members, we become bearers of Christ and sharers, as Saint Peter says, of the divine nature Do not then regard the Eucharistic elements as ordinary bread and wine: they are in fact the Body and Blood of the Lord, as He Himself has declared. Whatever your senses tell you, be strong in faith. The Lord urges us to make a sincere effort to make peace with each other when anger or hurt exists, seeking forgiveness or granting forgiveness, as appropriate, (Matthew 5:24) before approaching the Lord. Receiving Holy Communion is certainly important to our spiritual life and growth. This ultimate connection with Jesus Christ is a gift which God gives to us and one which should be accepted gratefully and responsibly. Our Church teaches that receiving Holy Communion frequently is encouraged. Our Church also teaches that a preparation is expected. Preparation for Holy Communion can vary from person to person. The minimum preparation to receive Holy Communion is to fast from meat on Wednesday and Friday and not eat anything on the morning, prior to receiving Holy Communion. For those who must take medication that requires food, they are permitted to eat that which is necessary for their health. Furthermore, the Church teaches us to fast on particular days during the year and especially during the four main fast periods. These four main fast periods are in preparation of holy days of the year, as follows: December (Nativity of our Lord) Great Lent (before Holy Week and Easter) Monday after All Saints Day through 28 June (the Apostles), 1 14 August (the Dormition of the Theotokos) Each of us is encouraged to approach the Chalice to receive Holy Communion in love and in peace, gratefully and responsibly.
