3 EPISTLE READING: St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:24-26, Brethren, by faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to share ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets -- who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign enemies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated -- of whom the world was not worthy -- wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. GOSPEL READING: John 1:43-51 THE CONFESSION OF FAITH (Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed) I believe in one God, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not created, of one essence with the Father through Whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried; And He rose on the third day, according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father; And He will come again with glory to judge the living and dead. His kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Creator of life, Who proceeds from the Father, Who together with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, Who spoke through the prophets. In one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come. Amen. PRAYER FOR SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY As the Prophets beheld; as the Apostles taught; as the Church received; as the Teachers dogmatized; as the Universe has agreed; as Grace has shone forth; as Truth has been proven; as falsehood has been disproven; as Wisdom has been presented; as Christ has rewarded. This is what we believe; this is what we declare; this is what we preach, Christ our true God, and we honor His Saints in words, in thought, in sacrifices, in Churches and in icons. Christ, we worship as God and Master, and His Saints we honor as true servants of our same Lord, and accordingly we grant them veneration. This is the Faith of the Apostles! This is the Faith of the Fathers! This is the Faith of the Orthodox! This is the Faith which has established the Universe! Therefore, with brotherly and filial love, we praise these preachers of piety, for the glory and honor of their own pious struggle for the Faith, and we say: Eternal be the memory of the defenders of Orthodoxy; pious Sovereigns, holy Patriarchs, Hierarchs, Teachers, Martyrs, and Confessors.

Remainder of the Congregation Church School Today - Class first at 9:30am, Preschool - 6th grade students are asked to bring icons to Church March 8 Class after Communion until 11:45pm March 15 Class first at 9:30am March 22 & 29 Class after Communion until 11:45am Lenten Mission boxes were distributed last Sunday and are due back to Church School teachers by March 29. This is the Lenten project for Church School and participation is one of the requirements for the Dickos Church School Award. The collection will continue through March. Children are encouraged to earn the money for the boxes. Milton & Theodora Dickos Church School Award: Lent is a good time to fulfill some of the requirements for this $500 to $1000 award. Requirement information is available in the Education Wing. Students Kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible. Sunday of Orthodoxy Inter-Orthodox Vespers Service Today at 5pm at St. George Orthodox Church, E. 116th Street in Fishers. Homilist is Father Jerome Sanderson of Christ the Savior Orthodox Church. A meal will follow the Divine Service. Free-will offerings will be accepted to support the ministry of Orthodoxy in Central Indiana.

7 Stewardship Deadline Everyone who has not yet completed a 2015 Stewardship Commitment Card is encouraged to do so. Blank cards are available in the Founders' Walk following the Divine Services and online at Holy Trinity Parish By-Laws stipulate that Stewards must have completed a Stewardship Commitment card and commenced donations by today in order to be eligible to vote at a General Assembly, run for the Parish Council, or vote in Parish elections. GOYA Wednesday, March Junior High GOYA and Senior High GOYA will sponsor the Lenten Meal. Saturday, March Holy Trinity/St. George Lenten Retreat at 9:30am, to include breakout session for GOYA/SOYA with Subdeacon Joseph. Please contact the Parish Office at to register. St. John Chrystostom Parish Oratorical Festival The St. John Chrysostom Parish Oratorical Festival for 7th-12th grade students is Sunday, March 8 following the Divine Services. Everyone is invited to attend and hear these amazing young adults as they express their Faith! Confessions Father Bill will be available to hear Confessions by appointment on Thursdays during Great Lent (March 12, March 19, March 26 and April 2) from 4pm to 5:30pm. Free-will donation requested. Guest speaker Ashley Purpura, PhD's topic will be "Being and Becoming the Body of Christ". Concelebration of the Salutations to the Theotokos on Friday, March 13 at 7pm at St. George Church (10748 E. 116th Street in Fishers). Everyone is invited to a Lenten Supper at 6 pm, before the 7pm Salutations Service. There is no charge. A freewill offering basket will be available. Retreat, including lunch, on Saturday, March 14 from 9:30am to 1pm at Holy Trinity Church. Register in the Founders' Walk following the Divine Services. Leisure Timers Due to the busy Lenten schedule and the importance of our Philoptochos Retreat which is a combined effort with Saint George Church, we encourage all Leisure Timers to attend the Lenten Retreat on Saturday, March 16, from 9:30 am to 2 pm in the Library at Holy Trinity Church. Lunch will be provided. It is also a wonderful opportunity for philoxenia. Book Store Essential books for Great Lent are available in the Holy Trinity Bookstore. Lenten Liturgies is $29 and Salutations and Akathist Hymn is $22. The Bookstore is open each Sunday following the Divine Services.

8 General Assembly All Holy Trinity Members are encouraged to attend the Genral Assembly meeting scheduled for Sunday, March 22 following the Divine Services in the Library. The agenda includes the revised budget and proposed Bylaws. Palm Sunday Luncheon Sunday, April 5 following the Divine Services. Adult fish dinner is $12 and children's menu (ages 5-11) is $6.00. Children under 5 are free. Reservation deadline is March 29. After the deadline, we will try to accomodate late reservations and the adult price will be $15. Reservation forms are available online at and in the Founders' Walk. Philoptochos Tsoureki (Pascha Bread) and Phyllo Sale Pre-order only. Order deadline is April 1. Pickup is Sunday, April 5. Order forms are available online at and in the Founders' Walk. Holy Friday Retreat Please mark your calendars for the Holy Friday Retreat on April 10. There will be programs for preschool-12th grade students. Myrrh-Bearers All girls ages 9, 10 and 11 years old are invited to serve as Myrrh-Bearers for the Holy Friday Evening Service on April 10. Practice will be Holy Friday afternoon at 1pm. If you would like to participate, please contact the Parish Office at or Susanne@holytrinityindy.org. The first 8 girls to sign up will serve. Guatemala Mission Orientation Meeting There will be a mandatory orientation meeting on Saturday, April 18 at 10am in the Conference Room. Lunch will be provided. 9 Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Encyclical of Archbishop Demetrios for Holy and Great Lent 2015 Encyclicals from Archbishop Demetrios of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Protocol 17/15 February 23, 2015 Holy and Great Lent Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance. Matthew 3:8 To the Most Reverend Hierarchs, the Reverend Priests and Deacons, the Monks and Nuns, the Presidents and Members of the Parish Councils of the Greek Orthodox Communities, the Distinguished Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Day, Afternoon, and Church Schools, the Philoptochos Sisterhoods, the Youth, the Hellenic Organizations, and the entire Greek Orthodox Family in America In the hymns and services of the Triodion period and at the entrance of this holy season of Great Lent, we are called to repentance. We are invited to come before God in the humility of the Publican. We are beckoned to return to His dwelling and His compassionate embrace as the Prodigal Son. We are confronted with the causes of our separation from God and our need for His great mercy. It is truly a time of repentance as we prepare to commemorate and contemplate all that has been done for us through Christ our Lord. This solemn and reflective journey is not one of despair. This is not a time of inconsolable grief or of deep anguish and anxiety. Holy and Great Lent is a time of spiritual renewal in which repentance finds forgiveness and grace, engenders hope, strengthens our faith and leads us to abundant and eternal life. First, we know through the Gospel that genuine repentance receives forgiveness and grace. The sincerity of the Publican expressed in his cry, God, be merciful to me a sinner, was recognized by God, and his sins were forgiven (Luke 18:13). John the Baptist preached, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand, calling people to prepare to receive the One who was coming in grace and truth (Matthew 3:2). The Cross of our Lord is before us, offering by the grace of God a way to salvation through repentance. Second, repentance nurtures hope. As the power of God s grace transforms us, as we see the blessedness of life restored to communion with Him, we experience the joy of hope. For the Prodigal Son it was the journey to return to the house of his father, hoping that something better awaited. At the beginning of this holy season our repentance leads us on the path of hope, knowing that hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts (Romans 5:5). Third, as through repentance we receive forgiveness and grace and our hearts are filled with hope, our faith is strengthened. As we prepare to celebrate the fulfillment of God s promise to defeat death, restore us to life, and lead us to the Resurrection, our faith in Him grows. Finally, in this sacred time of prayer and reflection, our repentance leads us to salvation. Through repentance our eyes are opened, we turn from darkness to light so that we may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Christ (Acts 26:18). Through the revelation of the absolute truth by Christ and His Cross and Resurrection, we know where our repentance leads, and we know that ultimately we enter the ineffable realm of a saved life with the perspective of eternity. At the beginning of the Great Fast and Holy Lent, let us contemplate the power of repentance and take this opportunity to examine our hearts and minds. Let us pray in humility seeking the forgiveness and grace of God, returning to communion with Him. Let us find renewed hope in the light, peace, and joy that comes from our Crucified and Risen Lord. 10 HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Saint John of Kronstadt ( ) says, in partaking of the Holy Sacrament, be as sure that you partake of the Body and Blood of Christ, as you are sure that every moment you breathe air. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem (about ) also teaches us Since Christ Himself has declared the bread to be His Body, who can have any further doubt? Since He Himself has said quite categorically, This is My Blood, who would dare to question it, and say that it is not His Blood? Therefore, it is with complete assurance that we receive the bread and wine as the Body and Blood of Christ. His Body is given to us under the symbol of bread, and His Blood is given to us under the symbol of wine, in order to make us by receiving them one body and blood with Him. Having His Body and Blood in our members, we become bearers of Christ and sharers, as Saint Peter says, of the divine nature Do not then regard the Eucharistic elements as ordinary bread and wine: they are in fact the Body and Blood of the Lord, as He Himself has declared. Whatever your senses tell you, be strong in faith. The Lord urges us to make a sincere effort to make peace with each other when anger or hurt exists, seeking forgiveness or granting forgiveness, as appropriate, (Matthew 5:24) before approaching the Lord. Receiving Holy Communion is certainly important to our spiritual life and growth. This ultimate connection with Jesus Christ is a gift which God gives to us and one which should be accepted gratefully and responsibly. Our Church teaches that receiving Holy Communion frequently is encouraged. Our Church also teaches that a preparation is expected. Preparation for Holy Communion can vary from person to person. The minimum preparation to receive Holy Communion is to fast from meat on Wednesday and Friday and not eat anything on the morning, prior to receiving Holy Communion. For those who must take medication that requires food, they are permitted to eat that which is necessary for their health. Furthermore, the Church teaches us to fast on particular days during the year and especially during the four main fast periods. These four main fast periods are in preparation of holy days of the year, as follows: December (Nativity of our Lord) Great Lent (before Holy Week and Easter) Monday after All Saints Day through 28 June (the Apostles), 1 14 August (the Dormition of the Theotokos) Each of us is encouraged to approach the Chalice to receive Holy Communion in love and in peace, gratefully and responsibly.
