3 EPISTLE READING: St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 2:11-18 BRETHREN, he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying, "I will proclaim thy name to my brethren, in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee." And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Here am I, and the children God has given me. Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage. For surely it is not with angels that he is concerned but with the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make expiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted. GOSPEL READING: The Gospel According to St Luke 1:24-38 In those days, Elizabeth the wife of Zacharias conceived and for five months she hid herself, saying, "Thus the Lord had done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men." In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you! Blessed are you among women!" But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible." And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her. 7 Cheerful Giving By Beth Eleftheri Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7) There is a very popular children s book call The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. The book follows the lives of a female apple tree and a boy as they develop a relationship over time. "Once there was a tree..." the story begins as the apple tree befriends the small boy. As the boy grows, the tree gives of herself and her resources to make him happy. She gives her apples so that he will have money, she gives her branches so that he can build a house and have a family, she gives her trunk so that he can build a boat and sail far away. Each time she gives - the tree is happy. Finally, the giving tree is only a stump which seems sad, but when she is able to be a place for the boy (now an old man) to sit and rest, she is happy once again. My wonderful son, Jonathan, will attest to the fact that I have always disliked this book. My negative attitude was based on the constant demands of the boy. Why can t he figure these things out on his own? Why does the tree need to always be on the giving end of the relationship? Where are the boy s parents? Then I realized, it s all about perspective. Instead of focusing on the boy in the story, I took a moment to consider the viewpoint of the tree. Each time the boy had a need, the tree offered some part of herself, and after giving her resources she was happy. The tree loved the boy and demonstrated her love by providing her treasures, and in return she felt joy. There is no doubt..that tree was certainly a cheerful giver. It was not her position to question why there was a need, instead her role was to offer what she could. This sounds a lot like God's gifts are meant not only to bless us, but for us to use to bless others. (1 Peter 4:10) I have come to realize that the Giving Tree is actually a story about how God gives great joy to those who are cheerful givers and that giving is a true act of love. We are called by God to give cheerfully of our time, talents, and treasures for the benefit of others and ultimately for the joy it will bring to us. And yes, Jonathan, I can change my mind.

9 SIXTH WEEK OF GREAT LENT Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (3) Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. All-Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, be gracious unto our sins. Master, pardon our transgressions. Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Your Name's sake. Lord have mercy. (3) Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. Psalm 130 (NKJV) Out of the depths I have cried to You, O Lord; 2 Lord, hear my voice! Let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. 3 If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? 4 But there is forgiveness with You, That You may be feared. 5 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I do hope. 6 My soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning Yes, more than those who watch for the morning. 7 O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is abundant redemption. 8 And He shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities. Prayer Lord our God, accept this fervent prayer by Your servant and have mercy on me. In the abundance of Your compassion, have pity on me and on all the people, who await Your plenteous mercy. For You are a merciful God, and to You we give glory: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Prayer of Ephraim O Lord and Master of my life! Take from me the spirit of sloth, faint-heartedness, lust of power, and idle talk. But give, rather, the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Your servant. Yes, Lord and King! Grant me to see my own errors and not to judge my brother or sister, for You are blessed unto the ages of ages. Amen.
