3 THE CONFESSION OF FAITH (Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed) I believe in one God, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not created, of one essence with the Father through Whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried; And He rose on the third day, according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father; And He will come again with glory to judge the living and dead. His kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Creator of life, Who proceeds from the Father, Who together with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, Who spoke through the prophets. 4 Philoptochos Oktoberfest Sunday, October 12 following the Divine Services. Menu is brats, potato salad, and apple pie. Adults $10 and children $5. Sign up today in the Founders' Walk following the Divine Services or go to Church School Communion Procedure: Teachers and their families follow the Narthex Servers so they can get to class before the students. Students remain in their seats until the ushers dismiss them. The ushers will dismiss students in the center portion of the Nave first and then the students from the excedras. HOPE/JOY Meeting There is a HOPE/JOY meeting today following the Divine Services in the Library. Our guest speaker is Jan Houin from Operation Quiet Comfort and we will be making cards and quilt squares for wounded soldiers. Parents are invited to attend and lunch will be provided. GOYA Basketball GOYA Basketball Practice (6th-12th grades) starts today at 12:30pm - 1:30pm at Zionsville West Middle School (5565 South 700 West, Whitestown, IN 46075). There will be a short informational meeting at the beginning of practice with GOYAns and their parents to introduce the Coordinators and Coaches and go over the upcoming year.. 5 Leisure Timers Leisure Timers will meet Wednesday, October 15 for lunch provided by John and Liberty Pasyanos and their crew. Speaker is Katy Kunk from C.I.C.O.A. (Centeral Indiana Center on Aging) who will be presenting a short presentation on safety in areas of importance to all of us. We will also have a bit of fun playing bingo. Dr. John Chryssavgis, Archdeacon, Environmental Advisor to His All-Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople will be at Holy Trinity on Sunday, October 19 to assist at the Divine Liturgy and offer the homily. Also, on Sunday, October 19, the Archdeacon will be at Saint George (10748 E. 116th Street in Fishers) for a Great Vespers Service at 5pm with a lecture following. Topic of lecture is "For the Peace of the Whole World: Creation, Care and Social Justice." On Monday, October 20, the Archdeacon will give a lecture at Marian University (Lecture Hall 1, Room 150 of the Evans Center), topic is "From Estrangement to Reconciliation: The Roman Catholic and Orthodox Church in Diaglogue." Shop 'Til You Drop The annual Shop 'Til You Drop holiday bazaar is on Saturday, October 25 from 10am-5pm. Get a head start on your Christmas shopping and help support your missions programs. Admission is free and there will be food and drinks available. Stewardship Stewardship Sunday is October 26 when everyone is encouraged to bring their completed 2015 Stewardship Commitment Cards that will be collected at the end of the Divine Liturgy. Our goal for 2015 is for everyone to give 3% of their income. Lunch will be served following the Divine Services, hosted by Father Bill, members of the Parish Council and members of the Stewardship Committee. 6 HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Saint John of Kronstadt ( ) says, in partaking of the Holy Sacrament, be as sure that you partake of the Body and Blood of Christ, as you are sure that every moment you breathe air. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem (about ) also teaches us Since Christ Himself has declared the bread to be His Body, who can have any further doubt? Since He Himself has said quite categorically, This is My Blood, who would dare to question it, and say that it is not His Blood? Therefore, it is with complete assurance that we receive the bread and wine as the Body and Blood of Christ. His Body is given to us under the symbol of bread, and His Blood is given to us under the symbol of wine, in order to make us by receiving them one body and blood with Him. Having His Body and Blood in our members, we become bearers of Christ and sharers, as Saint Peter says, of the divine nature Do not then regard the Eucharistic elements as ordinary bread and wine: they are in fact the Body and Blood of the Lord, as He Himself has declared. Whatever your senses tell you, be strong in faith. The Lord urges us to make a sincere effort to make peace with each other when anger or hurt exists, seeking forgiveness or granting forgiveness, as appropriate, (Matthew 5:24) before approaching the Lord. Receiving Holy Communion is certainly important to our spiritual life and growth. This ultimate connection with Jesus Christ is a gift which God gives to us and one which should be accepted gratefully and responsibly. Our Church teaches that receiving Holy Communion frequently is encouraged. Our Church also teaches that a preparation is expected. Preparation for Holy Communion can vary from person to person. The minimum preparation to receive Holy Communion is to fast from meat on Wednesday and Friday and not eat anything on the morning, prior to receiving Holy Communion. For those who must take medication that requires food, they are permitted to eat that which is necessary for their health. Furthermore, the Church teaches us to fast on particular days during the year and especially during the four main fast periods. These four main fast periods are in preparation of holy days of the year, as follows: December (Nativity of our Lord) Great Lent (before Holy Week and Easter) Monday after All Saints Day through 28 June (the Apostles), 1 14 August (the Dormition of the Theotokos) Each of us is encouraged to approach the Chalice to receive Holy Communion in love and in peace, gratefully and responsibly.
