As has been the case for many years, close to half (45%) of all women having abortions in 2013 reported having at least one prior abortion. More than 20% reported at least two. Nearly one in every 11 (8.8%) reported having three or more previous abortions. BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLY FUND For over twenty years the St. Vincent de Paul Society has provided Back to School packets to young children of low income families. In the last five years they provided over 23,000 packets to needy children worth nearly $345,000. To help with this ministry we plan to have a second collection the weekend of July 15 & 16 so SVDP can purchase the supplies in bulk. Please make any checks out to Our Lady of Grace; we will send one check from the parish. LIFE BOTTLES FOR BABIES If you have not returned your baby bottles filled with loose change, bills or a check, please do so. Your donation helps the Oakes Family Center in Brunswick to provide services that support and strengthen family life and values. Bring your baby bottles to Mass or the church office. PSR NEWS 2017/2018 registration forms and calendars are now available. You will find them in the church vestibule. Feel free to complete the registration form and return it to the PSR office via the collection basket. The PSR Department is in need of a few teachers for the upcoming year. 4 June 25, 2017 Page 4 HOW SHOULD WE MAKE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS? First, we should make the Sign of the Cross with the intention of renewing the Passion of Jesus Christ, of offering to the Eternal Father the infinite merits of the death of His Son and this in union with the Masses being said all over the World. The Mass is nothing else than the repetition, the renewal of Calvary. Therefore, when we make the Sign of the Cross we should distinctly wish to offer to God all the Masses being said all over the world. When we make the Sign of the Cross in this manner we give unspeakably great glory to God and obtain, each time, immense graces for ourselves. We actually participate in the Masses being said all over the world! Second, we should make the Sign of the Cross to thank God with all our hearts for having died for us. How many men never once thanked God for having suffered the awful death of Calvary for them! And yet He died on Calvary for each one of us in particular. He clearly saw each one of us on the cross and offered all His pains, sufferings and Precious Blood for each of us! Then at least when making the Sign of the Cross let us wish with all our hearts to thank God. Third, we should make the Sign of the Cross with the intention of applying to our souls the Passion of Jesus Christ. Our Lord died for us, He offered the infinite price of His Precious Blood for us. This is not sufficient unless we ourselves apply His merits and Precious Blood to our own souls. Fourth, we, souls, wish by this holy Sign to drive the devil far from us, and to ask God by the infinite merits of His Divine Son to deliver us from all evils. Fifth, when we make the Sign of the Cross, what we say means: 1. I firmly believe in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 2. I place all my unbounded trust and confidence in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 3. I love with all my heart the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Fire was a frequent occurrence in the city. On the early morning of July 19, 64, a fire broke out in a small shop by the Circus Maximus and spread rapidly to other regions of Rome. It raged for nine days, destroying much of the city. Rumors spread that Nero set the fire in order to rebuild the city with his own plans. Nero needed a scapegoat and accused the Christians of setting the fire. According to the historian Tacitus, Christians were put to death not so much of the crime of firing the city, as of hatred against mankind. Nero covered some of the Christians with the skins of beasts. They were torn to pieces by dogs and perished. Some were nailed to crosses. Some doomed to the flames and burnt. Some served as a nightly illumination, when daylight had expired. Nero offered his gardens for the spectacle, and was exhibiting a show in the circus, while he mingled with the people in the dress of a charioteer or stood aloft on a cart. These martyrs were called the Disciples of the Apostles and their firmness in the face of their gruesome deaths were a powerful testimony that led to many conversions in the early Roman Church. Their feast day is June 30th directly after the Solemnity of SS Peter and Paul, who are the principal patron saints of Rome.
