EYES OF FAITH Faith is a foretaste of the knowledge that will make us blessed in the life to come (St. Thomas Aquinas, Comp. theol. 1,2) (CCC184) Saint Thomas Aquinas uses the example of sight to give us insight into the theological virtue of faith. He says that faith enables us to see God in the way our vision enables us to see color. By every other sense we have, we can learn about our surroundings: the shape of things, the texture of things, their relative distance from us. What we could not know without sight is the particular color of something. Likewise, faith enables us to see the color of God. We can perceive His brilliance and radiance with the eyes of our faith. And just as it is with seeing color in the world, the more light we have in faith the truer the color of God appears. This is why God continually reveals Himself to us through the Church; we are enlightened by Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium. Each of these sheds light on the mysteries of God so that we can comprehend them all the better. This knowledge of divine realities that we come to by faith here on earth will be the foundation for our happiness in heaven. God has begun to reveal to us in this life all that He will fulfill in the next. Written by Father James M. Sullivan, O.P.
3 July 31, 2016 Page 3 FAMILY PERSPECTIVES In today s Gospel Jesus tells us: one s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. When we spend too much time working to obtain more stuff we don t have time for the people in our lives. What is enough? Are the words of Jesus, You fool, meant for us? Pope Francis warns us to resist a throw-away culture which values things over people and relationships. Make time and space for the people you love. CATHOLIC RADIO Are you ready for The Challenge? 16 teams will compete with all eyes on one goal the prize money for their favorite Catholic non-profit organization. Coming soon to Living Bread Catholic Radio on AM1060. Listen 24x7 on the radio, online (livingbreadradio.com) or download an app for your phone. And the many pro-lifers I know live a much deeper kind of discipleship than single issue politics. But they do understand that the cornerstone of Catholic social teaching is protecting human life from conception to natural death. They do understand that every other human right depends on the right to life. They did not and do not and will not give up and they won t be lied to." Archbishop Charles J. He was brought up in Rome, and studied in Vercelli, a city of Piedmont. Eusebius was ordained a priest there, and served the church with such zeal that he was unanimously chosen to be bishop. He is the first to link the monastic life with that of the clergy, establishing a community of his diocesan clergy on the principle that the best way to sanctify his people was to have them see a clergy formed in solid virtue and living in community. The Emperor Constans and the Arian heretics (Arians claim that Jesus is not God. They were a powerful people even commanding armies and senates.) held a Council in Italy with the intention of condemning Saint Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria. Eusebius refused to condemn Athanasius and resisted the heretics. He attempted to have all present sign the Nicene Creed (which proclaims that Jesus is one in being with the Father and directly contradicts the Arian teaching). The emperor put pressure on him. Eusebius reminded the emperor that secular force should not be used to influence Church decisions. The emperor threatened to kill him but sent him into exile in Palestine. There the Arians dragged him through the streets. At the death of Constans in 361, Eusebius was permitted to return to his diocese, where he continued to combat Arianism. He died peacefully on August 1, 371.
