4 December 4, 2016 Page 3 FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Parents must be like John the Baptist a voice crying in the wilderness of our consumer society. While society pressures us to shop until we drop the weeks until Christmas, you have the opportunity to prepare the way of the Lord in the lives of your children. VIRTUS TRAINING VIRTUS and the Protecting God s Children live training program establishes tools for people to use to create safe environments. It provides basic information surrounding child sexual abuse. The final training session for this year will be held on Tuesday, December 27th from 6:30-8:30 pm. All staff, catechists and any volunteers working with children need to attend this program. Please call the office to register. CATHOLIC COMMISSION OF WAM The Catholic Commission of Wayne, Ashland and Medina counties is entering its 30th year of work for the common good and the dignity of all life in our District. Catholic Commission helps our parish through their Commission meetings, initiatives, and new Parish Social Mission Network. They engage and convene in ecumenical and community concerns impacting our parish, and they advocate, with us, to public officials on issues affecting Catholic social teaching. Every year they request our help in continuing their mission. Therefore, this weekend a second collection will be taken for their benefit. RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT CAMPAIGN Your donation works for aging religious. 95% of donations to the Retirement Fund for Religious aids elderly religious by helping to furnish medications, nursing care, and more. Please support next week s collection for the Retirement Fund of Religious, and give to those who have given a lifetime. Congratulations to Kathryn Kuczynski, our parishioner, for making the Honor Roll at Holy Name High School for the first quarter of the school year. MATT MAHER IN CONCERT As we prepare for the joy of Christmas, The FEST is blessed to bring Matt Maher to town for an evening of incredible song, prayer and reflection. The concert takes place on Sunday, December 11th at Saint Ambrose Parish, Brunswick. For information and/or to reserve your tickets, go online to MUSIC MINISTRY NOTES The 11 am Mass, on the Feast of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, was enhanced with some extra special music by the choir. Fr. Joe directed the choir as they sang for the first time, Handel s Hallelujah Chorus at the end of the liturgy. The discussion came up last February, remembering Fr. McDonough s love of music, and knowing the Hallelujah Chorus was sung as the final hymn at his funeral, it seemed only fitting that the choir learn that piece. Beginning in March and continuing through this November, choir members spent hours practicing at weekly rehearsals, additional rehearsals between Sunday Masses, and home practice over the last nine months to learn this difficult piece. Thank you choir members for your dedication and for sharing your time and talent to accomplish all you have in 19 short months of being together! Thank you to the men of the music ministry and all the men of the parish that came together to sing in the Fr. Mac Memorial Men s Choir for Thanksgiving Day Mass! The music was beautiful and what a wonderful tradition you have made in the parish! Thank you again so much for sharing your time and talent to enhance this special liturgy, as we gave thanks for all the blessings we enjoy! Happy second week of the Liturgical New Year! Last week with the new Liturgical Year A beginning, the new Breaking Bread missalettes were also updated. The entire setting of the Mass of Creation can now be easily found on the front inside cover. No more scrambling to the back of the missalette to locate words. Everyone is invited to attend the Annual Family Christmas Concert on Friday, December 16th at 7 pm! Please plan in attending this wonderful evening of Advent and Christmas music presented by the music ministry! He was born in Cappadocia (modern-day Turkey) in 439, the son of an army officer. Sabas was left in the care of an uncle. He was mistreated by his uncle s wife so he ran away to another uncle when he was only eight. When the two uncles became involved in a lawsuit over Sabas estate, he ran away again this time to a monastery. Although the youngest monk in the house, he excelled in virtue. At the age of 18 Sabas traveled to Jerusalem, seeking to learn more about living in solitude. Initially he lived in a monastery, where he worked during the day and spent much of the night in prayer. At the age of 30 Sabas was given permission to spend five days each week in a nearby cave, in prayer and manual labor in the form of weaving baskets. He eventually moved farther into the desert near Jericho. Some men came to him desiring to join him in his solitude. At first Sabas refused but then relented. His followers swelled to more than 150, all of them living in individual huts grouped around a church, called a laura. In his early 50s, the bishop persuaded Sabas to prepare for the priesthood so he could better serve his community. Over the years he traveled throughout Palestine, preaching the true faith and bringing many back to the Church. At the age of 91, he undertook a journey to Constantinople in conjunction with the Samaritan revolt and its violent repression. He fell ill and soon after his return, died on December 5, 532.
