4 May 7, 2017 Page 4 FATIMA ANNIVERSARY INDULGENCE For the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal (which will take place on May 13th), Pope Francis will grant a plenary indulgence opportunity from now and until November 26, There are three ways you can obtain the indulgence. To obtain the plenary indulgence, the faithful must also fulfill the ordinary conditions: Go to confession and Communion, be interiorly detached from sin, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. 1. Pilgrimage to the Shrine The first way is for the faithful to make a pilgrimage to the Fatima Shrine in Portugal and participate in a celebration or prayer dedicated to the Virgin. In addition, the faithful must pray the Our Father, recite the Creed and invoke the Mother of God. 2. Prayer before any statue of Our Lady of Fatima The faithful who visit with devotion a statue of Our Lady of Fatima solemnly exposed for public veneration in any church, oratory or proper place during the days of the anniversary of the apparitions, the 13th of each month from May to October (2017), and there devoutly participate in some celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary. The visit to the statue of the Virgin does not necessarily have to be only at Fatima or exclusively in Portugal, but can be done anywhere in the world. In addition, the faithful must pray the Our Father, recite the Creed and invoke the Mother of God. 3. Application for the elderly and infirm this third way to obtain the plenary indulgence applies to people who, because of age, illness or other serious cause, are unable to get around well. These individuals can pray in front of a statue of Our Lady of Fatima and must spiritually unite themselves to the jubilee celebrations on the days of the apparitions, the 13th of each month, between May and October They also must offer to merciful God with confidence, through Mary, their prayers and sufferings or the sacrifices they make in their own lives. PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Jesus, Son of God, in whom the fullness of the Divinity dwells, You call all the baptized to put out into the deep, taking the path that leads to holiness. Waken in the hearts of young people the desire to be witnesses in the world today of the power of your love. Fill them with your Spirit of fortitude and prudence, so that they may be able to discover the full truth about themselves and their own vocation. Our Savior, sent by the Father to reveal His merciful love, give to your Church the gift of young people who are ready to put out into the deep, to be the sign among their brothers of Your presence which renews and saves. Holy Virgin, Mother of the Redeemer, sure guide on the way towards God and towards neighbor, you who pondered His word in the depth of your heart, sustain with your motherly intercession our families and our ecclesial communities, so that they may help adolescents and young people to answer generously the call of the Lord. Amen. Pope Saint John Paul II

Rose was engaged to a young man but after his sudden death, she decided to enter the convent. Rose joined a Dominican community but returned home shortly after because her father died. Then Rose s brother died. This left Marzia heartbroken and she died within a few months. In wake of this family crisis, Rose invited local women to her home to pray the rosary. She found how many were ignorant of their religion, so she began to instruct them. She was a born teacher. In 1685, with two helpers, Rose opened Italy s first public school for girls. It soon became a success. She was known for her persuasive ways of speaking, and for her responsiveness to any situation when the service of God was in question. Her reputation spread. In 1692 she was invited to advise and help in training of teachers and organizing schools in diocese of Montefiascone, and then in other parts of Italy. Sometimes she was met with fierce resistance. In one instance, opponents shot arrows at teachers and burned their house down. Rose persevered with patience and trust. She cultivated a close daily relationship to God while working to found over 40 schools. Rose died on May 7, 1728 in Rome.
