3 June 28, 2015 Page 3 FAMILY PERSPECTIVES In times of crisis, sickness or death families can be quickly overcome with fear and confusion as in the scene of today s Gospel. Purposely seeking God together in prayer and faith will dispel the fear and confusion and allow miracles to happen. DID YOU KNOW? Abortion affects both men and women. Beyond that, abortion is a human issue, not a gender issue. If abortion kills innocent human life (it does), then everyone, male and female, should stand against it. One doesn t need to be a young girl to take a position against the sex trafficking of young girls, and one doesn t need to be a woman to take a position against abortion. TWO HEARTS SHRINE The National Catholic Register (a weekly Catholic newspaper covering issues from a Catholic perspective) has written a wonderful article about our shrine. Check it out at site/article/shrine-of-two-hearts-celebrates-jesus-andmary. CATHOLIC FAMILY FESTIVAL Looking for a great family day this summer? 4 June 28, 2015 Page 4 DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE 2015 During this universal Year of Consecrated Life join in responding to the command of Pope Francis Wake up the World by connecting personally with religious congregations. Every Sunday from 1:30-4 pm religious communities throughout the diocese will open the doors to their homes and centers of ministry to welcome and connect personally with pilgrims. If you cannot physically make the journey, each week the communities will be highlighted in the bulletin. Benedictine Order of Cleveland, OSB The Benedictine Order of Cleveland welcomes you to their home, St. Andrew Abbey, 2900 Martin Luther King Dr., Cleveland, which is located behind Benedictine High School. They are monks who wholeheartedly choose to seek and depend on God the Father as Disciples of Christ in the Holy Spirit. They do this by living the Rule of St. Benedict under the Abbot of St. Andrew Svorad Abbey. They give witness to Christ s Kingdom by conversion and obedience in community life, of praising God through Liturgy, Lectio, silence, work and fellowship. They share the Word of God and their Benedictine presence by fostering an environment for others to encounter God. They do this through such work and service as hospitality, Catholic education, parish ministry and pastoral service to the church. THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS Traditionally each month of the year is dedicated by the Catholic Church to a particular aspect of our Faith. The Church dedicates the month of July to the Precious Blood of Jesus, the price of our salvation. The feast of the Precious Blood of our Lord was instituted in 1849 by Pius IX. However, the devotion is as old as Christianity. The early Fathers say that the Church was born from the pierced side of Christ, and that the sacraments were brought forth through His Blood. Pope St. Clement I, dated about 96 A.D. said Let us fix our gaze on the Blood of Christ and realize how truly precious It is, seeing that it was poured out for our salvation and brought the grace of conversion to the whole world. Veneration of the Precious Blood means that we must have a deep sensitivity to the awfulness of sin. Sin must be terrible. It must be awful. It must be the most dreadful thing in the universe. Why? Because it cost the living God in human form the shedding of all His Blood. Hannah Chamberlain & Michael Snyder II

Junipero was ordained in 1737 and then became a professor at the University of Padua. Junipero desired to convert the native peoples of the New World. He arrived at Vera Cruz, Mexico in He and a companion walked 250 miles to Mexico City. On the way his leg became infected by an insect bite which would remain a cross for him for the rest of his life. Junipero spent 18 years working in Central Mexico and the Baja Peninsula. He then founded the first nine of 21 missions in California, from San Diego to San Francisco. Junipero s missionary life was a long battle with cold and hunger, with unsympathetic military commanders and even with danger of death from non-christian native peoples. He often spent the night in prayer, praying from midnight till dawn. He baptized over 6,000 people and confirmed 5,000. His travels would have circled the globe. He brought the Native Americans not only the gift of faith but also taught them sound methods of agriculture, cattle raising, arts and crafts. Worn out by his labors, Junipero died on August 28, His feast day is July 1st.
