You are also asked to immediately inform local authorities about inappropriate behavior. WELCOME TO OUR NEW PASTOR! Let me start by introducing myself... I am Fr. Bill Smith and I am excited to be named the new pastor of Our Lady of Grace. I was born and raised in Cleveland. I am one of six children of William and Anna Smith, who are both deceased. I have two older sisters: Pamela and Patricia (dec). I have a younger sister: Roseann, and two younger brothers: Robert and Joseph. I am the product of the Cleveland Public School System graduating in I attended CCD classes at St. Joseph Franciscan Catholic Church, which used to be on East 23rd and Woodland Avenue. My background is in the medical field since I started out as a on the job trainee in Inhalation Therapy. I then attended Cuyahoga Community College (CCC) to become certified and then a Registered Respiratory Therapist. After finishing at CCC, I went on to study nursing at St. Vincent Charity Hospital to obtain a diploma in Nursing and becoming a Registered Nurse. In 1985 I continued my education in order to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. I worked in the field of Anesthesia full time until I entered the Seminary in I was ordained May 17, 2003 and was assigned to St. Monica Church as parochial vicar until In June 2007, I was transferred to St. John Bosco as parochial vicar until From June 2011 until June 2012 I was the parochial vicar at St. Augustine in Barberton. I became the Priest Chaplain at St. John Medical Center in June 2012 until being named pastor of Our Lady of Grace on March 20, May 1, 2018 was my first official day at this great parish. Some of you may remember that I was the presider at the Easter Vigil and the 11am Mass on Easter Sunday. I look forward to my time as your pastor and meeting all of you. In the near future I am planning a couple of town hall meetings where I would like to hear WHY I should be excited to be your pastor. May God Bless all you good people of Our Lady of Grace.

4 May 6, 2018 Page 3 PSR REMINDERS All 8th grade students can begin working on their service hours. Twenty hours are needed for Confirmation. All parents of PSR students please watch the bulletin about PSR news, especially about picking up registration forms for the school year. Forms will be available by the middle of summer. FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Families who abide in love abide in God and God with them. Mothers teach Jesus commandment to love their children by their generous love and caring discipline for them each day. Thank your mother or stepmother for the love and care she has given you to improve your character. PRIDE DAY Even though the weather wasn t cooperative for our Second Annual Pride Day, we had about twenty parishioners that were determined not to be discouraged. We had parishioners that gave the church and the rectory a nice spring cleaning, and a few outdoor jobs were accomplished. Thank you to everyone that took time from their busy lives to spruce up Our Lady of Grace Church! MAY CROWNING May 7 at 7 pm Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend our annual Parish May Crowning. Enjoy many favorite Marian hymns, the poem Lovely Lady in Blue will be read, reflections on the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary will be shared, two short essays about What Mary Means to Me will be read by PSR students, and the statue of Mary will be crowned. A very lucky First Communicant will be randomly chosen from all the students present at 6:45 pm in a drawing on the day of the service. After the service enjoy fellowship at an ice cream social in the hall. POPE FRANCIS A MAN OF HIS WORD Pope Francis is coming to America! Perhaps not in person, but at least in a one-of-a-kind new movie coproduced and endorsed by the Vatican. The movie opens in theaters nationwide on May 18th. The movie is intended to be a personal journey with Pope Francis, as he sets out to present his work of reform and his answers to today s global questions. From his deep concern for the poor to his involvement in environmental issues and social justice, Pope Francis engages the audience face-toface in a way never seen before. For more information go to EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION The Diocese of Cleveland is now offering formation sessions for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Anyone interested being a part of this important ministry, please call the office to register. The one-time class will be held at several churches throughout the Diocese. UNDER THE SEA VBS June * 9 am noon All children in preschool (ages 4) through 5th grade are welcome to participate in our excellent Under the Sea adventure. Enjoy a week of crafts, songs, games and snacks each day centered around Bible lessons. Registrations will be available by June 1st. At the age of 14, John was sent to the University of Salamanca to study law but left before getting his degree. At age 17, he felt called to the priesthood and studied theology and philosophy at Alcala, Spain. He was ordained in 1525, and after his parents died, he distributed most of his inherited fortune to the poor. John wanted to be a missionary to North America, namely the West Indies and Mexico, but the bishop of Seville persuaded him to remain in the Andalusia region of Spain. He worked as a traveling preacher in that region for 40 years and re-evangelized a region that had been previously ruled by the Moors. John attracted penitents and converts to Catholicism and developed a reputation as a wise confessor and spiritual director. He was not afraid to speak out against any vice he saw in the ruling classes, and thus made some enemies in high places. He was investigated by the Spanish Inquisition, accused of false teachings and in 1532 was imprisoned in Seville charged with exaggerating the spiritual dangers of wealth. He was eventually exonerated and released in 1533 and became an even more popular preacher. Among his friends were St. Teresa of Avila, St. Francis Borgia, St. John of God, St. John of the Cross, and St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. John worked closely with the Society of Jesus to foster their work in Spain. John was a mystic whose writings, mostly letters, were translated into several languages and are studied to this day. Beginning in 1551 John was constantly in poor health. He died on May 10, 1569 He was declared Venerable by Pope Clement XIII in 1759, was beatified by Pope Leo XIII in 1894, was canonized in May 1970 by Pope Paul VI and declared a Doctor of the Church on October 7, 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI. He is called the Apostle of Andalusia. His memorial is May 10.
