2 SUNDAY BEFORE THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS September 13, 2015 TROPAR: By your cross you shattered death, and to the thief you opened up a paradise. Into joy you turned the wailing of the myrrh-bearing women. You commanded the apostles to preach that you are risen. O Christ, our God, upon the world you bestow great mercy. TROPAR: Notwithstanding our unworthiness, you gifted us, Lord, with the life-giving cross as a sign of your goodness. We now bring to you that same cross and pray: save our country and your people who make their supplications to you through the Theotokos, O one and only true lover of all people. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. KONDAK: No more can death s power detain humankind, for Christ has gone down, shattering and bringing to naught its might. Hell finds itself in chains. With one accord the prophets sing and rejoice. The Savior is present here, invitingly saying to those in the faith: Come, all you faithful, into the resurrection. Now and forever and ever. Amen. KONDAK: The tree of salvation appears today out of the depths of the earth. It is reverently carried on high into the church by the bishop. With awe the universe devoutly honors the cross, through which, we pray, save us, O Lord. PROKIMEN: Save your people and bless, O Lord, your inheritance. Verse: To you I will cry, O Lord my God, lest you turn away from me in silence. A reading from St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians (6:11-18) Brethren, see with what large letters I have written to you with my own hand! As many as desire to make a good showing in the flesh, these would compel you to be circumcised, only that they may not suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. For not even those who are circumcised keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. From now on let no one trouble me, for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

Gospel of John 3:13-17 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. COMMUNION VERSE - Praise the Lord from the heavens; Praise Him in the highest. Alleluia. (3). VENERATION OF THE HOLY CROSS The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is celebrated on September 14. Veneration of the Holy Cross became public with the discovery of the true Cross of Christ about the year 326. It was discovered during excavation operations under Archbishop Macarius of Jerusalem ( ). Tradition credits St. Helena with the discovery of the true cross of Christ. St. Helena sent a large portion of the Holy Wood to her son, Emperor Constantine the Great, in Constantinople. Another portion was sent to Rome which was later deposited in the Basilica of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem. The first public veneration of the Holy Cross took place in Jerusalem on September 14, 335. The pious pilgrim Egeria, who visited the Holy Places in 380A.D., wrote in her Diary of a Pilgrimage: The dedication of these churches (Martyrion on Calvary and the Anastasis over the Holy Sepulchre) is observed with great solemnities, since the Cross of the Lord was also found on that day. The annual observance of the Dedication of the Basilicas together with the exposition and veneration of the Holy Cross attracted a great multitude of pilgrims. To enable the many pilgrims to view and venerate the Holy Cross, the Bishop elevated the relics of the Cross. This was the beginning of the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The feast was introduced into Constantinople from Jerusalem and from there to Rome by St. Gregory the Great. It was thus at the end of the 6th century that the feast became universal, being celebrated in the East and West. We Bow to Your Cross, 0 Lord, and we praise Your holy resurrection.

COFFEE HOUR: Thank you to the Popyk Family for the lovely coffee last week! CHOIR 40 th ANNIVERSARY: We will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Holy Year Choir on next Sunday, September 20 at 10:30am. All the Faithful are invited to join in our celebration. On Saturday, September 19 there will be no Saturday Divine Liturgy so that our Parish may celebrate together. Please note that a group picture of The Holy Year Choir, Father Popyk and Altar Servers will be taken immediately following Divine Liturgy. A Celebration Dinner will be held in the Church Hall following the Divine Liturgy and Group Pictures. The Parish Community is invited to the Celebration Dinner. Please sign the Catering Sheet in the back of the church- the deadline for signing up for the dinner is Sunday, September 13. EKUMEN CHORALE: The Ekumen Chorale (founded nearly 30 years ago by director Patrick J. Marcinko) performs sacred musical works in the authentic style and original language of the composer Mykhaelo Verbytsky ( ) will hold a concert at SS. Peter & Paul Church in Plymouth on Sunday, November 1 at 3:00PM. FALL FESTIVAL ROASTED TURKEY BREAST DINNER: St. Andrew Parish is holding a Roasted Turkey Breast Dinner on Sunday, September 20, 2015 in St. Andrew s (St. Patrick s) Church Hall, 318 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre. The dinner includes real roasted turkey breast, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, coffee/tea and dessert. There will also be a bake sale, theme basket raffle and instant bingo. 6 SEPTEMBER 11 FACTS: 19 men hijacked four fuel-loaded U.S. commercial airlines bound for west coast destinations. This terrorist attack on the United States was orchestrated by al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. A total of 2,977 people were killed in New York City, Washington, DC, and outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania, in the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history. At the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan, 2,753 people were killed when hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were intentionally crashed in the north and south towers. Of those who perished during the initial attacks and the subsequent collapses of the towers, 343 were New York City firefighters, another 23 were New York City police officers and 37 others were officers at the Port Authority. The victims ranged in age from two to 85 years. Approximately percent of the victims were men. At the Pentagon in Washington, 184 people were killed when hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the building. Near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, 40 passengers and crew members aboard United Airlines Flight 93 died when the plane crashed into a field. It is believed that the hijackers crashed the plane in that location, rather than their unknown target, after the passengers and crew attempted to retake control of the flight deck. As of September 2015, 1,640 of 2,753 WTC victims' remains have been positively identified.
